①Regent honeyeaters are beautiful black and yellow birds living in Australia. There used to be large groups of them, but now they are in danger of dying out. Scientists are trying to help these birds survive by teaching young birds to sing correctly.
②The birds are endangered because people have cut down many forests where they live. Scientists guess there are only about 250 of these birds left in the wild. As their number has dropped, they live more separately. This causes a problem: young male (雄性的) honeyeaters in the wild don’t learn the right song. Male birds need this song to attract female birds and protect their living areas. If they can’t sing it correctly, they have trouble finding females.
③Some young honeyeaters sing a simple song. Others even copy songs from other kinds of birds. Because there are so few of the birds left in the wild, some zoos in Australia are raising these birds and hope to send them back to nature some day. But without learning from adult birds (成鸟), young honeyeaters raised in zoos can only learn a strange and simple song.
④To solve this problem, scientists tried different ways. First, they played a recorded song for the young birds, but it didn’t work. Then they put wild adult birds who sing well with young birds. These adult birds became “teachers”. After about three months, the young birds learned the right song.
⑤Scientists found that teaching worked best when each “teacher” had five or fewer young “students”. Later, these well-taught young birds also became “teachers” for new chicks. Now, more than half of the male honeyeaters raised in zoos can sing the correct song.
⑥Scientists are now setting these well-trained birds free into nature. They hope that as more and more honeyeaters know the right song, their number will grow. When they all sing the same song, it will be easier for them to find each other and raise more chicks.
34. Regent honeyeaters are in danger of dying out because ________.
A. zoos are raising a lot of birds B. other birds are copying their song
C. they can not find enough food D. people have destroyed their homes
35. What does the passage tell us about the young honeyeaters?
A. Over 50% of the male honeyeaters kept in zoos can learn the right song.
B. Birds raised in zoos can learn the song from adult honeyeaters at first.
C. Scientists managed to teach young birds by playing the recorded song.
D. Scientists set birds to nature after they learned a strange and simple song.
36. Which paragraphs are about scientists’ efforts to help honeyeaters? (①=Paragraph 1)
A. ③④ B. ④⑤ C. ③④⑤ D. ④⑤⑥
37. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Raising Poor Birds in Zoos B. Teaching Young Birds to Sing
C. Losing Forests and Wild Birds D. Learning Different Bird Songs

Over the last year or so, AI-generated videos have become very surprising. It is now extremely hard to tell whether a video is real or not.
The most famous AI tool is OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It can quickly write computer code, poems, songs and research papers. It can also answer hard questions and solve difficult maths problems. Now many tech companies have their own versions of such tools. They are used everywhere. Google has even replaced its regular search tool with a new AI model.
AI models can create more than just text. They can make music, artworks, real-looking photos and even videos. At first, the work seemed good but often had clear problems, like a person with six fingers. Over time, most of these problems have been fixed. Several companies now offer cheap or free tools to make short lifelike videos. These videos look so realistic that people cannot tell them from real ones.
This can cause problems. After Hurricane Melissa, some made-up images and videos spread quickly on social media. For example, one video showed sharks were blown into local swimming pools, but it was not true. Those kinds of AI videos seem funny, but they can also be used in bad ways. People might believe things that are not true.
On October 20, an English news show had a part called “Will AI Take My Job?” A reporter talked about how AI could affect different jobs. At the end, the host said, “I don’t really exist. My image and voice were made by AI.” The TV network said the show was a reminder of AI’s power and how easy it is to cheat viewers.
Did You Know? Right now, there is no perfect way to know if a video is made by AI. Some companies put a mark on AI videos, but it can be removed. If you are not sure whether you can trust a video, it is best to be careful until you can check the information in another way.
38. ChatGPT is mentioned in Paragraph 2 to ________.
A. encourage people to use AI more often B. give an example of what AI tools can do
C. tell why Google changed its search tool D. show AI can create videos better than humans
39. What can we learn from the passage about AI technology?
A. AI tools are mostly used by companies to improve search engines.
B. AI has been able to make real-looking videos since it first came out.
C. It is becoming harder for people to tell real videos from AI-made ones.
D. People have already found good ways to check if a video is made by AI.
40. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A. AI can trick people in some ways. B. The host was a real person in the show.
C. AI can create different kinds of videos now. D. The show was made to introduce a new AI tool.
41. Through this article, the writer wants to ________.
A. show how ChatGPT works for us B. teach people how to make AI videos
C. warn about the dangers of AI videos D. describe the development of AI tools

When Lin Wei finished university in Beijing in June 2019, she chose to join Teach For China, which sends young teachers to villages with poor schools. She applied for a two-year programme and hoped to be accepted.
In September, Lin arrived at Qingyun Village. Her first class was English for fifth graders. “Good morning,” she said. Twenty pairs of eyes stared silently. Then a small girl whispered, “Good... morning?” “That’s perfect!” Lin laughed.
The girl was Xiaomei. She was shy and quiet and had never left the village. Her parents worked far away. She lived with her grandmother. “I want to see the world,” Xiaomei told Lin softly, “but I don’t know how.”
Lin worked hard to change things. She set up an English corner and played English songs every morning. Gradually, the classroom became a place full of laughter and curiosity.
One day, Lin brought a large map to class. She shared stories about different cities. Xiaomei looked at the map. “Have you been to all these places?” she asked. Lin smiled, “No. There are still many places I hope to visit one day.” After class, Xiaomei stayed in the classroom, looking quietly at the map.
When December came around, some students stopped coming to school. One day, Xiaomei did not come either. Lin found her feeding pigs at home. “My grandmother is sick,” Xiaomei said, looking down, “I need to help her.”
Lin sat beside her for a moment. “Do you remember the map in our classroom?” she asked. Xiaomei nodded. “When I was your age, I thought my world would always stay the same,” Lin said softly, “School doesn’t change everything overnight. But it helps us see more choices.” Xiaomei was silent. After a while, she looked up and asked, “Do you think I can have those choices too?” Lin smiled, “I think you’ll find out.”
The next morning, Xiaomei returned to school with her books in her arms.
Months later, Lin organized an English speaking activity. To everyone’s surprise, Xiaomei stood up. Her voice shook, but she finished every sentence. For the first time, she smiled with confidence.
Two years passed quickly. In June 2021, it was time for Lin to leave. Xiaomei walked to her, holding a hand-drawn map. “This is for you. The world I drew myself. I’ll see it one day,” Xiaomei said.
After the programme, Lin returned to Beijing and became an English teacher at a middle school. But she still kept in touch with her former students. Last month, Xiaomei sent Lin a message: “I want to go to university in Beijing. Then I will come back and teach here.”
Lin looked at the message and remembered the shy girl. She smiled, picked up her phone and replied: “ ▲ .”
42. What does the underlined phrase “applied for” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Asked to join. B. Waited to start. C. Decided to leave. D. Tried to forget.
43. Lin Wei shared a map with her students mainly to ________.
A. show students the places she travelled to before
B. help students see more choices outside the village
C. make her English class more lively and interesting
D. decorate the classroom walls with colorful pictures
44. Complete the timeline according to Lin Wei’s experience:
A. Started to change things; Xiaomei stayed at home
B. Xiaomei fed pigs; Some students stopped coming
C. Arrived at the village; Xiaomei went back to class
D. Xiaomei returned to class; Got the map from Xiaomei
45. Which sentence can be put in “ ▲ ” as Lin’s reply?
A. That’s a great plan but you may change your mind
B. Teaching in the village is not the only way for you
C. You should stay in the village and help your family
D. You can make it and I’m waiting for you in Beijing

Dashuhua, which means “striking iron flowers”, is a special traditional firework show during important festivals. Performers use spoons made of willow wood to throw hot melted iron (高温铁水) at the city walls. They usually wear thick sheepskin coats and bamboo hats to keep safe from the high heat of the hot melted iron. The hot iron touches the cold walls and turns into bright silver sparks. The beautiful sparks look like shining tree branches, making a wonderful and amazing sight for people to watch.
Dashuhua is a great traditional folk art from Yuxian County, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. In May 2021, it became a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). This old art started from the local weapon-making industry in Nuanquan Town hundreds of years ago. Long ago, local blacksmiths found that melted iron would make beautiful sparks when it hit cold walls. Slowly, this act became a popular folk show. People held the show to wish for peace, safe life and good harvests every year.
In the past, people held dashuhua on the 14th day of the Chinese New Year, just before the Lantern Festival. Today, shows are also held on weekends and public holidays. So more visitors can come to watch and learn about this special folk culture.
A common dashuhua show needs a team of twelve people, and four of them are main performers on the stage. Workers melt about 500 kilograms of waste iron at a high temperature of over 1,600°C. Performers carefully throw the hot liquid iron onto cold walls to make fantastic spark views. The show is exciting but dangerous, so it needs much courage, good skills and a strong will.
Now this traditional art is facing big problems. In Nuanquan Town, it is hard to find young people to carry on with this traditional art. To solve the problem, Wang De, a 61-year-old inheritor, plans to teach young people his skill. He learned this skill from his father. He also plans to invite them to watch dashuhua shows. He believes these ways can help pass on the valuable folk art to the next generation.

【16题详解】
句意:老板面露不悦地等着我,因为我的报告里出了差错。
空后为名词短语a mistake,此处表原因;because of 后接名词/名词短语表原因,符合题意。thanks to侧重“多亏”,instead of意为“代替”,together with表示“和……一起”,均不符合语境。
【17题详解】

前文已经接连遭遇不顺,此处是雪上加霜,even worse为固定搭配,表示“更糟糕的是”,符合语境;sadder更难过的,stranger更陌生的,luckier更幸运的,语义不符。
【18题详解】
句意:到午饭时分,我又疲惫又低落,似乎没有一件事是顺利的。

根据“noticed my bottle”,老奶奶需转身才能看到身后的作者。turned around意为 “转身”,符合老奶奶回头注意到我水瓶的动作;turned on打开,turned up出现、调高,turned down拒绝、调低,均不符合动作场景。
【23题详解】
句意:我本该让你先结账的。

B

根据第二段首句“The birds are endangered because people have cut down many forests where they live.”,它们濒危是因为人类砍伐了它们栖息的森林,即“人们毁坏了它们的家园”。
【35题详解】
根据第五段“Now, more than half of the male honeyeaters raised in zoos can sing the correct song.”,超过一半(50%)的雄性吸蜜鸟学会了正确的(correct和right同义)歌声。
Teaching Young Birds to Sing”.
C
