Below are places for meaningful journeys into nature, history and culture.
Austrian Alps
Since 2008,36 villages in Central Europe's Eastern Alps have banded together to promote their
communities to the travelers in the world who are interested in mountain hiking, biking, and climbing,
as well as winter sports like cross-country skiing and ice climbing. The villagers put great emphasis on
green mountain tourism. For example, they refuse large tourist projects like huge ski sites and cable
cars.Hikers usually stay in farmers'houses and try traditional foods after a long day in the mountains.
Longmen Grottoes
Running for about 1,000 meters along the Yi River in China's Henan Province and carved between
the 5th and 8th centuries,Longmen Grottoes features over 2,300 caves which are home to more than
100,000 Buddha()statues.As one of the four most famous grottoes in China,it offers invaluable
information about the politics, economy, and spirituality of its time.

Standing in the yard,12-year-old Cindy Keele saw the worry on her mother's face, when the world
suddenly fell quiet, leaving the air hot and heavy over Lubbock,Texas.
“Get in and put on your shoes,.”her mother said calmly.“We have to go to the storm cellar(地窖).”
The girl ran inside. As soon as the door closed behind her,a softball-sized stone damaged the
kitchen window and three more broke through the back wall. And then came the unmistakable,
deafening sound of an approaching tornado.
"They say a tornado sounds like a train,"Keele recalls 51 years later."But I disagree.Maybe
more like a thousand trains. It's a sound you never forget but can never describe."
But getting herself and her three kids to safety was no simple matter-the shelter was at the
opposite end of the park.If they didn't drive, they'd never make it.
"My mother was a small woman, but suddenly she seemed to have superhuman strength,"Keele says,
her voice still wavering so many years later."She threw my four-year-old sister into the back seat.
Then she went back to the house to get my nine-year-old brother. As she got to the car,he just started
flying up into the air.My mother grabbed him by his legs,as if he were a kite, and pulled him back down.
At last, everyone was in the car and her next clear memory was about what happened inside the
shelter."There were 60 persons there,"Keele says."The sound outside was deafening.For a moment,the
metal door, which was held tight with two big slide locks at the top and bottom, seemed to be forced
open by the wind.Eight men rushed to the door and tried their best to keep it from flying open..."
After what seemed like a century, the wind finally stopped. When they came out, they found that
everything was gone.
"My mother started running straight for our street.A man stopped her-he'd just come from there
and he knew what she would find, adds Keele."I'd never seen my mom cry.But she broke down that day.

While the rest of the country's schools were struggiing with math, student performance in
Piedmont,a rural Alabama school district, improved obviously.
Piedmont,a 1,100-student district where seven out of 10 come from poor families, changed its
teaching method five years ago:Teachers used test scores to see where their students were struggling
and then they tried to help each kid focus on specific skills.
"Once we made that decision and allowed our teachers time to dig into the data,it paid off,"said
Mike Hayes,the head teacher.
Piedmont students ranked()35th in the state in math in 2017.By spring 2022,the district
ranked 12th in the state on math, with 57%of students reaching proficiency().Statewide,30%of
students scored proficient in math.
To encourage teachers to dig deeper into student data, the Piedmont system made the school day
longer and freed up time every four weeks for "data days",when educators got together to study the
testing results and decide how to divide the students into small groups for focused instruction.
"Research supports the use of tests to help teachers figure out which students need personalized
help,"said Rebecca Dreyfus,an expert helping schools improve student learning."Focused instruction for
small groups of students also has years of research and evidence to back it up."
At first, when Piedmont decided to introduce the small group instruction, teachers said they didn't
have enough time in a regular class to do it well.So the district lengthened math classes to 80 minutes
every day in the middie school and 120 minutes each day in the elementary school.
"The longer math classes made a big difference,"teacher Landon Pruitt said."In a 45-minute class,it
is impossible to teach in small groups and get through the contents that we are required to cover.
28.Why are the data used in paragraph 4?
A.To describe a phenomenon in the US.
B.To show the effect of the teaching method.
C.To tell the students'family background.
D.To explain the state-wide math performances.
29.What does the testing aim to do in Piedmont?
A.Get money from students.
B.Force teachers to work harder.
C.Choose the best students.
D.Guide personalized instructions.
30.What does Rebecca Dreyfus suggest about the tests?
A.They are waste of time.
B.They need further research.
C.They can be very helpful.

Coolness is not a widely studied subject.Past research has found that coolness is usually considered
something positive:Cool people enjoy taking risks and doing extreme things and they are usually
fashionable and attractive.
But Dr..Warren and his team want to know what makes a person“good”rather than just“cool”.So
they asked the participants in an experiment to think about the people they considered good or cool.
Then they were asked to match each person with 15 different qualities.
"We found that the good and cool people do share some qualities. For example, those who appear
agreeable are equally considered cool and good,"Dr.Warren said."But,across the board, the qualities
that are usually related to kindness or helpfulness are more often associated with good people instead of
cool ones.Compared with cool ones, good people seem to be warmer, more helpful and traditional.
They usually work harder and see everyone and everything as being equal or equally worthy of care and
respect.”
Their finding further suggests that the drive to be cool is particularly strong during teenage, and it
influences not only what people buy or whom they admire but also how they talk and what they do for fun.
So is coolness a quality that's worth dreaming of?
"I have serious doubts,"Dr.Warren said."Sure, cool kids get more attention in school, but many
of them who continue behaving in this way in adulthood would struggle. For example, they are very likely to
develop problems with drugs and relationships.Though coolness may offer popularity during youth,it
is how good you are that contributes to long-term success.Even the most uncool kid will probably do
well if they have at least some close friends.
32.Which quality is more often related to cool people according to the text?
A.Respectfulness.
B.Helpfulness.
C.Adventurousness.
D.Agreeableness.
33.Who are most likely to try to appear cool?
A.Babies.
B.Teenagers.
C.Young adults.
D.The elderly.
34.What is Dr.Warren's attitude to cool adults?
A.Unfavorable.
B.Appreciative.
C.Unconcerned.
D.Unclear.
35.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Possible problems for cool kids.
B.Advantages of being a good person.
C.Shared qualities of good and cool people.
D.Differences between cool and good persons.
