C Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting (预测) that it could be particularly active. Officially, hurricane season begins from June 1 and runs through November. One reason is that sea surface temperatures in the tropical (热带的) Atlantic are already at record highs. Meanwhile, another significant potential factor in this year’s hurricane season is taking shape thousands of miles away in the Pacific. Over periods ranging from three to seven years, the waters of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warm and cool in turn as a result of a repeating climate pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes less likely to form but La Niña does. During the 2023 season, ENSO was in an El Niño period. However, by the time the 2024 season starts, it will have changed into a “neutral(中立)” period, but that by the peak months, it is likely to have changed fully into a La Niña. “How quickly that change occurs can affect everything as well,” says DaSilva, a lead hurricane weatherman. “There’s a lag time. So, while we expect the change to occur in mid-summer, it may not be until late summer or fall where we really see those effects across the Atlantic basin.” As a result, he says, this year’s hurricane season could remain particularly active deep into November. Of course, no report can predict when individual storms will come or the paths they will take, but DaSilva warns that those who live in areas likely to suffer hurricanes, especially around the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, should prepare. “If a tropical storm system comes into this area, it could rapidly strengthen, potentially close to land,” he also warns. “And that’s why people need to be careful and have their hurricane plans ready. Because any system with these kinds of conditions can explode very quickly. That’s what we’re concerned about.” 28. What is the function of Paragraph 1? A. To give advice. B. To explain the season. C. To introduce the topic. D. To inform a weather report. 29. What is a reason for this year’s hurricane season? A The hurricane season has entered its peak. B. A repeating climate has changed weather in summer. C. The sea surface temperatures are the highest of all time. D. El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes more likely to form. 30. What do the underlined words “a lag time” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. A time delay. B. A time in a zone. C A time waste. D. A time in advance. 31. What does DaSilva agree with about this year’s hurricane season? A. It can be exactly predicted ahead of time. B. People needn’t worry about hurricane season. C. It may be eventually controlled by weathermen. D. People can’t be more careful about hurricane season. D Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport. Researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland. All participants were required to answer questions on height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed (评估) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, and the average well-being score for all participants was 17. The researchers divided sports participation into low (0 — 3.5 hours a week), average (3.6 — 10.5 hours), high (10.6 — 17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants in the average group. The researchers found that the highest well-being scores were gotten by participants who carried cut around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but exercising beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores. Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been connected with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-respect in teenagers. The researchers suggest that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about their well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can provide information for guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers. 32. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Useless. B. Important. C. Reasonable. D. Harmful. 33. What do the researchers find out? A. Low sports participation causes overweight. B. The sports participation is divided into four levels. C. The highest well-being scores are gotten in the “high” group. D. The average well-being score of teenagers between 16 and 20 in Switzerland is 17. 34. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A research paper. B. A health magazine. C. A business report. D. A fitness diary. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. Measures to improve teenagers’ well-being. B. Concerns of physicians about teenagers’ well-being. C. Importance of physical activities on teenagers’ well-being. D. Relationship between sports participation and teenagers’ well-being. The first time I had a roommate was during my freshman year of college. A month passed and I learned to do many things. I was excited and ready to learn back handsprings(手翻). Back handsprings are one of the main things you need to know for gymnastics because they are done so often. In my opinion, they are the hardest to do, but I was ready to try. Our coach pulled out a handspring machine to help the kids who were learning how to do them for the first time. This machine is a block that has cushion(垫子) all around it. You basically sit in the mouth of the machine and push off with your feet and go backwards until you land on your hands, then feet. When to use the hair dryer. C. Where to put your luggage. 11. Which of the following is the electricity in North America? A. 130 volts. B. 110 volts. C. 220 volts. 12. Why is the long-distance call so expensive? A. Because it is special. B. Because the time is long. C. Because the hotel adds a high service charge. 13. What is the speaker talking about? A. The service in the hotel. B. The fee of a long-distance call. C. The charge of the hotel. A 11. B 12. C 13. When you stay in a hotel, there are some things you should know about. First you have to tip. The bell-man gets 50 cents to $1 per bag for taking your luggage to your room. Maids usually don’t expect a tip, but if you stay more than a few days or if your maid does something special for you, a $2 tip is a good idea. Room service waiters should get 15% of a bill. Electricity in North America is 110 volts — not 220. This means you won’t be able to use your hair dryer or your electric razor unless you can change it to 110 volts. When telephoning from your hotel room, you will often have to go through the hotel switchboard, especially for a long-distance call. These calls can be quite expensive, because the hotel usually adds a high service charge to the calls you make. On the other hand, local calls can generally be made from your room by dialing direct. You can also ask the hotel receptionist to give you a wake-up call in the morning. You will always find soap, towels and linen in hotel and motel rooms in the US. 14. Why is Mr. Smith leaving his position? A. To change a job. B. A. The hurricane season has entered its peak. C. A time waste. D. A time in advance. 31. What does DaSilva agree with about this year’s hurricane season? A. It can be exactly predicted ahead of time. B. People needn’t worry about hurricane season. C. It may be eventually controlled by weathermen. D. People can’t be more careful about hurricane season. C 29. C 30. A 31. 结合全文及文章第一段“Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting that it could be particularly active. (虽然距离2024年大西洋飓风季节正式开始还有两个半月,离高峰期更是有近六个月的时间,气象专家们已预测这可能是一个特别活跃的飓风季。)”可知,第一段的功能是引出文章的话题。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Officially, hurricane season begins from June 1 and runs through November. One reason is that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are already at record highs. (官方上,飓风季节从6月1日开始,持续至11月。原因之一是热带大西洋的海表温度已达到创纪录的高水平。)”可知,海面温度是有史以来最高是是今年飓风季节的原因之一。故选C项。 【30题详解】 词义猜测题。根据文章第五段划线后“So, while we expect the change to occur in mid-summer, it may not be until late summer or fall where we really see those effects across the Atlantic basin. (因此,尽管我们预计变化将在仲夏时节发生,但直到晚夏或秋季,大西洋盆地才可能真正感受到这些影响。)”可推知,存在一个滞后时间,故划线词与A项“时间延迟”意义相近。故选A项。 根据文章最后一段““If a tropical storm system comes into this area, it could rapidly strengthen, potentially close to land,” he also warns. “And that’s why people need to be careful and have their hurricane plans ready. Because any system with these kinds of conditions can explode very quickly. That’s what we’re concerned about.” (“如果一个热带风暴系统进入这个区域,它可能会在接近陆地时迅速加强,”他还警告说,“这就是为什么人们需要小心并准备好飓风应对计划。因为在这些条件下,任何系统都可能迅速增强。这是我们所担心的”)”可知,人们对于飓风季节的警惕性再怎么高也不为过。故选D项。 D Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health.
