Dear Chairman,
I am Li Hua from Grade 8. I am writing to recommend myself for the “Top Ten Teenager” award.
First of all, volunteering is a great chance for teenagers to show responsibility, including helping at school, serving communities and joining charities. It lies in lasting care for people rather than amazing achievements, which fits the activity’s spirit well.
Secondly, I have volunteered for two years. I help slow-learning classmates at school, visit lonely elders on weekends and donate books to children in mountain areas. Their smiles always fill me with pride.
Thirdly, this selection drives me to keep spreading warmth. If I win, I will invite more classmates to volunteer. Even if I don’t, I will stick to voluntary work and grow into a caring teen. I sincerely hope you can consider me.
Yours sincerely, Li Hua

HYROX,a fitness race for every one.You run one kilometer, then do a simple workout like pushing a heavy sled,
rowing or carrying sandbags. You repeat this eight times. No superpower needed. No professional training
required.Just a willing heart.
Think of it like your school sports day and the Olympic Games, with volunteers and athletes working as one
team.
Take Leo,a 15-year-old volunteer. His job was handing out water cups at the finish line.At first,he felt
small and nervous. He did not know anyone. But as tired runners came in,sweating and breathing hard,Leo
handed them water and shouted"good job!"When they smiled and said"thanks,"Leo discovered something
important:helping others succeed gives you a deep sense of self-worth.He also learned real skills that day-
staying focused under pressure, speaking clearly when tired, and solving small problems quickly by himself.
Athletes push through eight stations and eight runs with the help of volunteers like Leo.Their legs shake.
Their lungs burn. Some stumble and keep going without looking back.A cold drink,a loud cheer,a clear direction
-these small acts keep exhausted runners going.Athletes learn that true strength is not just about muscles. It is
having the modesty to accept help from others and the grace to say thank you from the heart, even when you have
no breath left to speak.
Together, volunteers and athletes prove one simple truth:no one finishes alone. It is a living classroom where
every cheer and water cup builds not just stronger bodies, but stronger communities. As founder Christian Toetzke
looks to the future, his eyes shine with a bigger dream:"To see HYROX in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics..."
58.In each round of the HYROX race, what is the right order of activities?
A.Do workouts-Run 1 kilometer

Being bored is no fun, especially at work. Most people try to avoid it or see it as a waste of time. However,a
recent study from the Research School of Management at the australian National University suggests that
boredom may have an unexpected benefit.
In the study,52 students were given a boring task of separating red beans from green ones for 30 minutes.
This task was simple but required little thinking.Meanwhile, another group of 49 students was asked to create art
projects using paper, beans, and glue-a more enjoyable and creative activity. Then both groups were asked to
spend five minutes on a creative task, such as coming up with new uses for everyday objects.Surprisingly, the
group that had performed the boring task produced more creative ideas than the group that had taken part in the art
project.
"Boredom is not necessarily terrible based on my research, says the study's leader,Guihyun Park.He
explains that when people feel bored, they want to escape that state."People want to get out of a boring situation,
so they tend to seek novelty(追求新奇),which can bring out creativity.”
For designers and anyone in a creative field, boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace. The famous
author J.K.Rowling has shared how she would spend hours sitting on trains, letting her mind fly,and coming up
with new ideas for her stories. This boredom allowed her to tap into her creativity and imagination, leading to one
of the most beloved book series ever-Harry Potter.
However,it's also worth noting that studies have found that not everyone experiences the same level of
creative benefits from boredom.Park agrees that boredom really can be harmful to some important work."I

My name is Bruce Lee. I’m from China. I’d like to tell about my experience as an exchange student in Britain last year, it was my first time living abroad alone for such a long period.
At first, many things were strange to me, such as the language, the food and the school life. My host parents, Mr and Misses Hurst, were very kind. They organized many activities for me so that I wouldn’t feel lonely and could make new friends more easily.
However, life in the UK was not easy to get used to. My biggest problem was the language. People spoke very fast, and their everyday English is quite different from what we learned back home.
Another difference was the food. My host family often had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really missed rice and dumplings from home.

DNA is a special part inside every cell (细胞). It tells the cell what to be—part of a human, an animal, or a plant. Here’s a way to see your own DNA!
What you’ll need
◈A clear cup ◈A spoon ◈Salt ◈Dish soap (洗洁精) ◈Isopropyl alcohol (酒精)
The most important! Ask adults to help deal with alcohol!!!
What to do
Put on your safety glasses-we’re about to do some chemistry!
❖ Put a half spoon of salt into a glass half full of water.
❖ Take a mouthful of the saltwater and keep it in your mouth for a minute, but don’t drink it.
❖ Pour the saltwater back into the glass. The mixture now has some cells from your mouth!
❖ Add one drop of dish soap to the saltwater mixture and mix it gently. Try not to make bubbles.
❖ Next, ask an adult to slowly pour some drops of isopropyl alcohol down the side of the cup so that it sits on top of the salty soapy water. Don’t shake.
❖ In about a minute you should see tiny white, thread-like things forming on the top of the alcohol.
This is your DNA!
This easy DIY experiment shows that we can uncover hidden scientific facts and get close to the truth by ourselves.

(Crusoe is alone on a lonely island, fighting against loneliness and despair, and finally finding a reason to live.)
Scene One
The waves threw Robinson Crusoe onto the sand like a useless thing. He lay there, his mouth full of sand and salt water.
When the sun rose, he saw only trees, rocks, sky, and the endless sea around him.
“No one,” he said out loud. “There is no one.”
His voice disappeared into the wind, as if it had never appeared.
Scene Two
On the third day, he built a simple tent with tools he found from the wrecked ship. But at night, a storm came. The tent blew down, and rain poured in. He sat in a corner, wet and cold.
“God,” he prayed for the first time, “if you are real, let me die easily.”
But he did not die.
The next morning, he dried his clothes and built it again.
Scene Three
Years passed. He had a small cornfield, a kind of umbrella made from goatskin, and a shovel carved from wood. He stood on the highest point of the island, staring at the faraway line where the sky met the sea.
No sail ever appeared there.
“I know I may never go back,” he wrote in his diary. “But I will not die today. And I will not die tomorrow.”
He gave the parrot a name.
Scene Four
One Friday morning, he saw a footprint in the sand — not his own.
He hid behind a rock, holding his spear. His heart beat so hard he thought it would break.
“You are not alone,” he said to himself.
At that moment, he could not tell whether he was more afraid — or more relieved

Just a few weeks ago, thousands of people gathered in Hong Kong and Shanghai for two of the latest HYROX, a fitness race for everyone. You run one kilometer, then do a simple workout like pushing a heavy sled, rowing or carrying sandbags. You repeat this eight times. No superpower needed. No professional training required. Just a willing heart.
Think of it like your school sports day and the Olympic Games, with volunteers and athletes working as one team.
Take Leo, a 15-year-old volunteer. His job was handing out water cups at the finish line. At first, he felt small and nervous. He did not know anyone. But as tired runners came in, sweating and breathing hard, Leo handed them water and shouted “good job!” When they smiled and said “thanks,” Leo discovered something important: helping others succeed gives you a deep sense of self-worth. He also learned real skills that day – staying focused under pressure, speaking clearly when tired, and solving small problems quickly by himself.
Athletes push through eight stations and eight runs with the help of volunteers like Leo. Their legs shake. Their lungs burn. Some stumble and keep going without looking back. A cold drink, a loud cheer, a clear direction – these small acts keep exhausted runners going. Athletes learn that true strength is not just about muscles. It is having the modesty to accept help from others and the grace to say thank you from the heart, even when you have no breath left to speak.
Together, volunteers and athletes prove one simple truth: no one finishes alone. It is a living classroom where every cheer and water cup builds not just stronger bodies, but stronger communities. As founder Christian Toetzke looks to the future, his eyes shine with a bigger dream: “To see HYROX in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics…”
58. In each round of the HYROX race, what is the right order of activities?

59. How does the article help readers understand HYROX?
① By showing personal experiences ② By listing numbers
③ By showing similar events ④ By carrying out a study
A. ① ③ B. ② ③ C. ③ ④ D. ① ④
60. What can we infer from the article?
A. Leo came to understand the meaning of HYROX.
B. True power means having strong muscles and refusing help.
C. Leo shouted “good job” to the tired runners while volunteering.
D. Athletes need to finish eight stations but fewer than eight runs.
61. What might Christian Toetzke say after the ellipsis (...)?
A. “… and any medal means more to me.”
B. “… and to see HYROX brings the world together.”
C. “… but honestly, I'm not sure if it will happen.”
D. “… and I will train hard to compete in the Olympics.”

Being bored is no fun, especially at work. Most people try to avoid it or see it as a waste of time. However, a recent study from the Research School of Management at the Australian National University suggests that boredom may have an unexpected benefit.
In the study, 52 students were given a boring task of separating red beans from green ones for 30 minutes. This task was simple but required little thinking. Meanwhile, another group of 49 students was asked to create art projects using paper, beans, and glue — a more enjoyable and creative activity. Then both groups were asked to spend five minutes on a creative task, such as coming up with new uses for everyday objects. Surprisingly, the group that had performed the boring task produced more creative ideas than the group that had taken part in the art project.
“Boredom is not necessarily terrible based on my research,” says the study’s leader, Guihyun Park. He explains that when people feel bored, they want to escape that state. “People want to get out of a boring situation, so they tend to seek novelty(追求新奇), which can bring out creativity.”
For designers and anyone in a creative field, boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace. The famous author J. K. Rowling has shared how she would spend hours sitting on trains, letting her mind fly, and coming up with new ideas for her stories. This boredom allowed her to tap into her creativity and imagination, leading to one of the most beloved book series ever — Harry Potter.
However, it’s also worth noting that studies have found that not everyone experiences the same level of creative benefits from boredom. Park agrees that boredom really can be harmful to some important work. “I would say at safety jobs where you need to be watchful all the time, like police or guards, boredom will keep your mind dreaming, which is really bad,” says Park.
62. What was the result of the study?
A. Doing a boring task takes less time.
B. Creative activities require little thinking.
C. Doing a boring task may lead to more creative ideas.
D. Creative activities help people keep thinking more actively.
63.The word “embrace” in the sentence“ boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace” has the same meaning as that in .
A. Farmers embrace high tech to help them. B. She embraces her daughter warmly at goodbye.
C. Arts embrace music, painting, literature.... D. The village is embraced by trees and flowers.
64. In the School Newspaper Club, four members(Leo, Mia, Tom and Emma ) have different roles.
According to the passage, who would benefit more from boredom?
A. Leo — he checks facts and makes sure every detail is correct.
B. Mia — she thinks of story ideas and designs the pages.
C. Tom — he guards the printing room and watches the machine.
D. Emma — she makes a timetable and tells the finishing time.
65. What’s the best title of this article?
A. The way of seeking novelty. B. A surprising power of boredom.
C. The secret of being a great writer. D. The importance of keeping creative.

Eleven-year-old Millie Childs comes from England. She makes a special pair of glasses to help people with reading problems.
Millie has dyslexia. It is a common learning problem. For kids and adults with dyslexia, reading and writing are always very hard. They often look at words for a long time but can’t understand them quickly. This makes many students feel upset when they have lessons or do homework every day.
Millie first knew her problem at the age of eight. At that time, she found it difficult to read storybooks or textbook words. One day, she tried coloured glasses and found they could help her read much faster and more clearly. But she didn’t like taking different pairs of coloured glasses everywhere she went. It was not easy for a little girl to carry so many things. Then she started to think of a good idea.
She worked hard for a long time and designed Rainbow Glasses. The lenses of the glasses can change among red, green and blue. She could choose the right colour anytime when she read.
Millie’s special glasses won a big prize in a famous student competition. She was very excited when she heard the good news. She said, “My dyslexia has always made reading a big challenge, so I wanted to invent something that could help people like me. I know how hard reading is for us, so I never gave up my idea.”
Now Millie is very happy about her invention. She hopes Rainbow Glasses can be put on the market. She wants all people with dyslexia to read easily and feel confident every day.
