10. —How long ________ you ________ this book?
—For two weeks.
A. have; borrowed B. have; kept C. did; borrow D. did; keep
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】句意:——这本书你借了多久?——两周。
考查现在完成时中的延续性动词。根据“For two weeks.”可知,问句为现在完成时,并且为持续性动作,其谓语结构是:has/have+动词的过去分词,所以第一空用have;“borrowed”是短暂性动词,不能与一段时间连用,应用“kept”。故选B。

A Visit to a Desert in Mexico
Jose and his family decided to travel to the Sonora Desert in Mexico. They had already visited other deserts in North America including Mojave, Chihuahuan, Painted and Great Basin Deserts. However, it was the first time the family drove out into the Sonora Desert to look at its plants.
They started their trip early morning. They took a tent with them, as well as plenty of water. Jose learned about the cactus plant at school. He wanted to see as many cactuses as he could. He knew that there were more than 2,000 kinds of cactuses. He also knew that Mexico had more kinds of cactuses than anywhere else. He wanted to dig one up and take it home with him.
Even early in the day, it was hot as Jose and his family admired the beautiful cactus flowers. “They don’t look like any other flowers I’ve ever seen,” said his mother. His younger sister added, “Look at the colors of the flowers. I see red, yellow, orange, purple, white and pink.”
Jose remembered his report and explained, “Most cactus flowers do not last long.” Then he said, “Did you know that a cactus plant has fruits? Some people say you can eat all cactus fruit.” Indeed, the birds like the fruit and even the flesh of the plant. If a person was without water in the desert, he could break open a piece of cactus and get the water stored inside.
“Ouch! You must get past those awful spines first,” said his sister. “Farmers sometimes burn the spines off and feed the cactus to their cattle when it is really dry and there is not enough grass for them.” Jose told his family, “The cattle seemed to enjoy it.”
“I’m glad you know about cactus plants,” his father said. “Let’s have a cool drink and then head back to town. Did you find a cactus plant to take home, Jose?”
“No, they are so beautiful here in their natural home. I’m just going to take some pictures. I’d rather remember the cactus the way they are here, with the sand, the blossoms, and the mountains in the distance,” he answered.

When I was organizing my clothes, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu I only wore once. Since a Chinese friend gave me a set of ancient-style hair accessories (配饰), I matched a whole set of Hanfu. Then, ancient-style articles appeared in my clothes one after another. When I saw them again, I thought of a sentence: I may have been caught by the “birdcage (鸟笼) effect”!
“Birdcage effect (BCE)” is one of the top ten psychological (心理的) problems that human beings cannot easily deal with. BCE means that when you get something one day, you will probably prepare more things to match it. There is a story behind it. One day, James, a psychologist, joked with his friend Carlson and predicted that Carlson would surely raise a bird. At first, Carlson didn’t care. When James gave Carlson a birdcage on his birthday, friends who visited Carlson’s house believed that he had raised birds. During that process, Carlson kept explaining. In the end, he really bought a bird. Like Carlson, many people have been or are being caught in the BCE.
My friend Tinny said she wanted to buy a good pen to match a pretty notebook her sister gave her. I joked that she must have been caught in the BCE. But my friend said with a smile, “Why not use the birdcage effect instead? When I have a beautiful notebook, I will want to buy a pen that is smooth and easy to write, and next I will want to buy a book I like, and then start to take notes.”
For the first time, I heard that the BCE could be used in reverse. However, this reminded me of my middle school days, and I seemed to have used the BCE. One day, I bought a magazine and saw the call for writings published in the magazine, so I started writing. After that, I bought a beautiful notebook to record my feelings. More and more magazines appeared in my study, and my interest in writing increased.
How can we stop being caught in the BCE in many things and even use it? Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can divide them. If it is not in line with (与……一致) the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, so we must learn to stop losses in time. If it is “positive birdcage” that drives us to develop upward, we can clear our goals up and encourage ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, we will find that the BCE is actually not terrible!
30. Why does the writer talk about Hanfu in Paragraph 1?
A. To describe her life style. B. To explain the origin of BCE.
C. To introduce Chinese culture. D. To show an example of the BCE.
31. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The term BCE came from Carlson’s story.
B. James used the BCE to record his feelings.
C. Tinny was caught in the BCE so she bought a good pen.
D. The writer bought a book because he was caught in the BCE.
32. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Birdcage Effect: Why Is It So Terrible?
B. The Birdcage Effect: Why Are We Caught in It?
C. The Birdcage Effect: How to Avoid It in Your Life?
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage?
【答案】30. D 31. A 32. D

A new research published in Nature Machine Intelligence suggests that teaching materials science, mechanical engineering, computer science, biology and chemistry as a combined discipline(综合学科) could help students develop the skills they need to create lifelike artificially intelligent(AI) robots as researchers.
Known as Physical AI, these robots will be designed to look and behave like humans or other animals. At the same time, they will own intelligence(智力) normally connected with biological organisms(生物有机体). These robots could in future help humans at work and in daily living, performing tasks that are dangerous for humans and helping with medicine, caregiving, security, building and industry.
However, today’s robots and biological beings exist separately and the intelligence of the two have not yet been combined. Co-lead author Professor Mirko Kovac said, “The development of robot ‘bodies’ has greatly fallen behind the development of robot ‘brains’. Unlike digital AI, which has been studied deeply in the last few decades, breathing physical intelligence into robots has remained relatively unexplored.”
The researchers say that the reason for this gap might be that no systematic educational method has yet been developed for teaching students and researchers to create robot bodies and brains combined as whole units.
This new research suggests a way of overcoming the gap by combining scientific disciplines to help future researchers create lifelike robots with abilities such as developing bodily control, autonomy and sensing at the same time.
Professor Kovac said, “We picture Physical AI robots being developed in the lab by using unusual materials and research methods. Cross-disciplinary cooperation and partnerships will be very important.”
The researchers also advise strengthening research activities in Physical AI by supporting teachers on both the institutional and community level. They suggest hiring and supporting university educators whose priority(重点) will be cross-disciplinary Physical AI research. “Creating lifelike robots has been an impossible task so far, but it could be made possible by including Physical AI in the high education system,” Kovac said.
We hope that the researchers’ work will encourage active discussion of the topic and will lead to combination of Physical AI disciplines in the educational mainstream. The researchers intend to carry out the Physical AI methodology in their research and education activities to help build human-robot ecosystems.
33. What do we know about Physical AI robots according to the passage?
A. They have been able to help humans at work.
B. They will have human brains and animal bodies.
C. They have been designed to look and act like humans.
D. They will have intelligence connected with biological organisms.
34. What does the underlined words “this gap” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A. Biological beings have been paid enough attention to.
B. The robot “brains” have fallen behind the robot “bodies”.
C. Systematic educational method hasn’t been developed by now.
D. Physical AI hasn’t been well explored compared with digital AI.
35. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. intelligence is important in creating digital AI robots
B. development in digital AI can help produce smarter robots
C. unusual materials might be used to develop Physical AI robots
D. we have developed lifelike robots by having Physical AI in education
36. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show the difficulties of Physical AI development and the related solutions.
B. To call for combination of Physical AI disciplines in the education system.

A 14-year-old Girl Made an APP for Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症) Patients
Emma is a 14-year-old student. Her grandma has Alzheimer’s Disease which has caused her to forget things that were very important to her. Emma’s family stay connected by sending her photos through her iPad, in hopes that she would remember them for as long as possible. Her caregiver would give her the iPad and she would look at the photos. Sometimes she remembers the people in the photos, sometimes she doesn’t, because recognizing people is becoming increasingly difficult. She also needs her caregiver to help her remember to do everyday tasks such as taking medicine or making phone calls. Her illness is making it difficult for her to stay connected with others.
As time went by, Emma started to wonder, is there a simple mobile app that could help her grandmother and other Alzheimer’s patients remember events, stay connected with friends and family, and recognize people around them?
Emma’s family hunted widely for such an app. But they were disappointed because in fact, the app they wanted didn’t exist (存在). There are many tools in the market but none of them help patients improve their daily lives. They also found that there were very few apps developed for the elderly, due to the stereotype (刻板印象) that old people cannot use technology. They are the under-served people. Right at around that time, Emma started learning how to code in Swift, an iOS programming (编程) language. So she took the matter into her own hands and developed the app Timeless.
Emma spent two years working on the app that uses AI-powered facial recognition to help Alzheimer’s patients identify people in their life. Patients take a photo of a person and the app helps them identify who that is, whether it is a loved one or a caregiver. The app also works as a daily planner and helps patients to remember events and stay connected to their social support system.
Emma is now working with an international team of developers to improve the app. With a design expert and a software developer, she believes she can make Timeless a convenient and user-friendly app for Alzheimer’s patients.

27. Jose’s family traveled to the Sonora Desert to ________.
A. have a look at its plants B. study the cactus flowers
C. taste the cactus fruit D. dig up different plants
28. What can we know from the passage?

C
C. To explain the reason why Physical intelligence has remained unexplored.
D. To encourage people to prepare for the age of Physical AI progress.
