Go Places with Reading
Read Across America Day falls on March 2 each year. The event was started in 1998 by the National
Education Association. One of its main goals is to introduce children to different books with characters they can
relate to and worlds different from their own. Here are some ways you can take part in the celebration.
Host a book exchange
Ask friends or family members to bring a middle-grade book they would recommend.Lay the books out on a
table and give everyone a chance to read the plot summaries.Try making the exchange extra fun with snacks, like
gummy worms.Everyone can go home with one or more new books.
Read as a group
Plan a "read-in"where a group reads together. You can also ask a teacher to hold one in a classroom.Ask
everyone to bring a book and read a short passage aloud. This is a great way to spark (conversations and
discover new books for your reading list.
Explore this year's theme
The 2026 theme for Read Across America is kindness,so this is a great time to choose titles with that focus,
such as The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig.

Before breaking his back and injuring his spinal cord()as a result of the fall from a high mountain in
2023,Darren Edwards'dream had been to climb Mount Qomolangma one day."I knew that Qomolangma was out
for me after the accident, but I'm fortunate because I was able to take on some other great challenges with the
support of some good friends,Darren said
Earlier this year,Darren joined the first all-disabled team to move across Europe's largest icecap, unsupported
and unassisted,on a sit-ski.It was during this trip that he realised he was no longer battling against his limitations.
Rather,he was enjoying a very special adventure, one that he was able to do though he was disabled."This was
when I started dreaming of an even bigger adventure-to complete the furthest journey on a sit-ski in the history
of the South Pole exploration,"he said.
Darren now skis for 10 to 12 hours every day."I am not training to be able to go faster, but to make myself
ready for an endurance()challenge because I need to cover 333 km in temperatures below -20C before
reaching the South Pole,"he said."But I am fairly pleased to have the opportunity to take on the sit-ski exploration
especially because for one year after my accident I did not imagine I would be able to take up such challenges."He
also believes that the adventure will provide inspiration for anyone who has a spinal injury or anyone who is
struggling.
Realising how fortunate he has been to be encouraged by others to take on new challenges and adventures,
Darren and a friend have started a business,Adaptive Expeditions."I know how much I have gained from being
able to take on adventures that I never imagined would be possible due to the spinal cord injury. So we want to
inspire individuals with disabilities by offering the same opportunities and impactful explorations to push their
limits and discover their potential,"Darren said.

Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families,a child's success is always "on show".
Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person.
The term "peacock parenting"comes from the idea of being "as proud as a peacock".Here it means a
self-centered style of parenting.A peacock parent may show off a "perfect family"in public, yet criticize the child
behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations.Over time, the child may learn that love is
conditional. They may disguise their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe,"I am not
worthy".
Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological (control. When the child sets a
boundary or feels upset, the parent may say,"You're too sensitive,"and turn the blame back onto the child. This
often creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold
the next, making the child feel like they are"walking on eggshells".In adulthood, this may lead to people-pleasing
and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal ()Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention,or
even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may grow up too fast and
miss out on a normal childhood.
Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own
interests.Supportive friends, groups,or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing.Clear
boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be
necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent's roof.
28.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To raise a phenomenon.
B.To describe a study.
C.To explain the causes.
D.To offer the solutions.
29.What does"peacock parenting"in paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A.Public recognition.
B.Unconditional love.
C.Independent growth.
D.Honest self-expression.
30.Which sign best matches "role reversal"in paragraph 3?
A.The parent praises the child in public
B.The child tries to win others'praise.
C.The parent relies on the child for support.
D.The child avoids setting any boundaries.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
第4页/(共8页)

A.Distance ensures safety.
B.Self-care is the final step
C.Healing requires parental effort.
D.Support exists beyond the family.

When cities grow fast, people face a choice:tear down old areas for new buildings or save places that tell past
stories. This brings a key challenge-how to protect relics and traditions without halting progress. They are not
just old objects;they form a nation's cultural identity and guide us to face the future.
The value of heritage lies in its two-sided nature.Historical sites remind people of shared memories, while
traditions carry a group's values.The Great Wall is a typical example.Over 20,000 kilometers long,less than
one-tenth of its Ming Dynasty part remains due to weather and human damage.Yet it is more than an old wall-it
stands for the strong will and teamwork of ancient Chinese people.Another example is the Forbidden City, home
to plenty of treasures.Though crowded with visitors,it is better protected with new approaches like digital records
and careful repairs. Its creative products mix old patterns with modern designs, showing how traditions fit into
today's life.
However, threats exist.Rapid development often puts economic gains first, leading to the neglect()or
destruction of some heritages.Natural disasters also bring risks.Besides, many young people prefer global culture
and show little interest in local traditions.Governments make rules and fund repairs, but saving heritage needs
more-community efforts, online tools and education to build love for local culture.Luckily, more teenagers are
learning old skills or using phones to document folk stories.
In short, protecting history and tradition isn't about freezing the past. It's a developing process:choosing
valuable parts and connecting them creatively with modern life. This balance ensures the past guides us forward,
enriching culture and strengthening national identity.Good protection is creative, finding new ways for people and
history to coexist.
32.What does the underlined word"halting"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Reducing.
B.Stopping.
C.Promoting.
D.Changing.
33.Why does the author mention the Great Wall and the Forbidden City?
A.To introduce standard ways of protection.
B.To compare protection methods for relics.
C.To stress their importance as Chinese heritage
D.To show heritage value and modern adaptation.
34.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Protection depends on different efforts
B.Global culture replaces local traditions
C.Natural disasters are the biggest danger.
D.Economy influences heritage protection little.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Tips on Saving Cultural Relics
B.Dangers to Ancient Architecture

Should Mobile Phones be used in Education?
The widespread use of mobile phones has changed how we communicate daily, but their place in education is
still a matter of debate. Some feel mobile phones can serve as a useful tool for learning.36 Rather than
listening to the teachers carefully in class, they use their devices (to text, play games, watch videos or even

try to cheat by taking photos of tests.
37
According to a survey, some students keep checking their phones, texting or going on social
media. Some students even spend up to 12 hours daily on their mobile phones. As a result, they usually fall asleep
in class.
Educators are exploring ways to monitor (students'using mobile phone effectively. For example,
France has made a law that doesn't allow students under 15 to use mobile phones in school.Schools have begun to
use special boxes to keep students'phones during school time.38 The idea of limiting mobile phone use
isn't just happening in a few schools.Over 30 schools in France have put some kind of limit on mobile phone use
this year or last year, with different areas making their own rules about phones.
39 The teachers in these schools believe that students have grown up with mobile phones. They
think it's their job to teach students how to use mobile phones the right way as a learning tool. They also teach
about how to use phones properly, including how to be responsible with social media and the Internet.40
In their eyes, the technology has already existed,so schools should use it to help students and not fear it.
A.In this way they won't be encouraged to use them.
B.It's impossible that mobile phones can destroy a child.
C.They regard it as part of changing education for children.
D.The problem of students using mobile phones in class is a real worry.
E.There is a chance that students are improperly using their mobile phones.
F.In fact, without proper guidance, mobile phones can discourage the learning experience.
G.However, some schools have decided to allow students to use mobile phones when necessary.
