Women scientists around the globe have made significant contributions to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths). Here are four female scientists who pushed boundaries and changed the world.
Wu Chienshiung (1912 — 1997)
Born in Taicang, Jiangsu province, Wu took part in the Manhattan Project which helped create the world’s first nuclear weapon. Her famous Wu experiment overturned the theory of parity (宇称理论) in physics. This breakthrough led to a Nobel Prize that was awarded to her male colleagues, but Wu’s critical role in the work was overlooked.
Hedy Lamarr (1914 — 2000)
Austria-born Lamarr starred in a lot of Hollywood films and made great success. She was also super smart and a self-taught inventor. During the second world war, Lamarr together with George Antheil, a composer, developed a radio guidance system. The principle of their work is part of the basis of Bluetooth and wireless technology.
Katherine Johns (1918 — 2020)
African American NASA mathematician Johnson’s calculations were critical in getting the first US astronauts to space and back safely. During her 33-year career at NASA, Katherine earned a reputation for mastering complex calculations and was referred to as a “human computer”.
Tu Youyou (1930 —)
Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, Tu shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two other foreign scientists, for her work in discovering artemisinin, a drug used to treat malaria. At a party I encountered a museum director, who would soon be leaving on an African safari (观兽旅行). Feeling fascinated, my partner Hugh and I enthusiastically booked one, the sort where you shoot wildlife with a camera rather than a gun.
A month later at Maasai Mara, a 583-square-mile nature reserve, we were in a vehicle surrounded by seven lions, none of which seemed to care about us. On the drive to our camp, we saw every animal that was in The Lion King. But a herd of eight elephants eating grass stole the show. Despite their impressive size, what surprised me, and was so magnificent, was the sound of the tall grass being torn with their trunks. I closed my eyes to listen, imagining creating a best-selling perfume that would smell the way grass being ripped from the ground by elephants.
The world can be a wild place, but that’s not the lesson you want to carry home with you. Yes, we humans are cruel and often dangerous, but there’s still nature, and before it’s too late we need to appreciate it. Admittedly, not everyone can hang out with elephants, but look at that bird landing on your feeder, and at that squirrel chasing the bird away from the feeder. Look at the rats slipping before you on a city street, at the spider that somehow got smashed in your elevator.
We’re all on a safari of one kind or another — it’s just that some of us aren’t returning with two brilliant souvenirs of Maasai and a bacteria infection.
24. What can we learn about the safari the author booked?
A. It involved photographing wild animals.
B. It was recommended by the museum director.
C. It required the author to carry a gun for safety.
D. It was a last-minute booking due to excitement.
25. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Lions were the most impressive animals they saw.
B. They spotted a great variety of classic wild animals.
C. The author recommended the movie The Lion King.
D. Maasai Mara was the filming location of The Lion King.
26. What does the underlined phrase “stole the show” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Failed to meet expectations. B. Caused a sudden disturbance.
C. Created a dangerous situation. D. Became the most attractive part.
27. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the text?
A. To call for timely appreciation of nature. B. To share an unforgettable safari experience.
C. To remind readers of the cruelty of humans. D. To describe the beauty of wildlife in Africa.

Hip hop began over 50 years ago in the Bronx, New York City, as an escape from poverty and violence. Its music and style attracted Black and Latino youth. As it spread across New York, so did its culture.
People often confuse hip hop with rap. Rap is a musical style of reciting rhymes to beats. But hip hop is more than music; it is a whole culture, with rap being one element. It also includes breakdancing, disc-jockeying, and graffiti art. As KRS-One said in his song, “Rap is something you do. Hip hop is something you live.”
In its early days, street music and dance parties might have seemed like simple fun. But they were truly a direct response to poverty and violence in their communities. It was a way to express joy and imagination without wealth.
As hip hop grew into a cultural force, artists used it to address their realities. In 1982,Grandmaster Flash’s The Message criticized poverty in Black communities. Later, Tupac Shakur’s Changes spoke against police violence. Today, hip hop’s influence on music and other industries is immense and hard to measure.
Its impact is also seen in global social movements and different political opinions. From the Arab Spring to feminism, rap music serves as a call to action. Music videos worldwide feature breakdancing and graffiti, key elements of hip hop.
As civil rights leader Al Sharpton said, “Hip hop took the chains off us and said, ‘No, we’ re gonna say it our way,’” giving a powerful voice to the poor and those treated unfairly. “It was that freedom. It was that raw, non-watered down kind of expression.”
28. What is paragraph 1 mainly about as for hip hop?
A. Its background. B. Its content. C. Its future. D. Its popularity.
29. What can be inferred from KRS-One’s words?
A. Hip hop develops quickly in the world. B. Hip hop carries an attitude towards life.
C. Hip hop makes people confused about life. D. Hip hop focuses on having fun and partying.
30. What was the early hip hop?
A. A competition in dance and music. B. A call for peaceful global relations.
C. A response to poverty and violence. D. A trend of musical experimentation.
31. What made hip hop powerful in Sharpton’s view?
A. It fits in with social values. B. It’s associated with wealth.
C. It satisfies the public’s tastes. D. It helps speak out for the poor.
D
In recent years, protein has gained great popularity as the most discussed nutrient, particularly among those who care about health. According to the World Health Organization, healthy adults should consume 0.83 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily to maintain muscle and tissue health.
But some groups need more protein than others. For example, older adults benefit from about 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, paired with regular strength training — it helps slow down age-related muscle loss. Besides, eating more protein aids weight management through its high thermic effect — requiring more energy for digestion compared to fats and carbohydrates, and meanwhile makes you feel full longer. If you want to build muscle, sports nutrition experts suggest eating 1.4 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily when you do strength training. However, recent research indicates that eating more than 1.6g/kg brings no extra gain.
Protein powders offer convenient sources with confirmed effectiveness, yet these supplements cannot replace comprehensive training. Traditional nutrition advocates stress that whole food sources provide superior nutritional value compared to processed supplements, which often contain unnecessary additives, while at the same time delivering beneficial nutrients like calcium and iron.
Most people who follow a western diet, including vegetarians, usually get enough protein without conscious effort. As for the worry that too much protein hurts your kidneys, research shows this mainly affects people who already have kidney problems. The bigger health risk comes from where you get your protein — red meat and highly processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats and other harmful stuff.
In regions with reliable food access, measuring your protein by the gram may not be worth it. Unless you are trying to build a lot of muscle, a normal balanced diet provides plenty.
32. According to the passage, who doesn’t need extra protein?
A. Peter, a muscle-building fitness coach. B. Steven, an overweight school boy.
C. Mr. Owen, a thin retired engineer. D. William, a healthy young doctor.
33. What do we know about whole food sources?
A. They are effective but less accessible. B. They are nutritious and additives-free.
C. They contribute to healing kidney damage. D. They contain many unhealthy fats and stuff.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards red meat protein source?
A. Disapproving. B. Ambiguous. C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
35. Which summarizes the passage’s main view?
A. Everyone should track their diet closely. B. Protein supplements are always better.
C. Normal diets usually offer enough protein. D. High protein intake is generally dangerous.

This summer took an unexpected turn when my friend, Liam, asked me to attend Mrs Finch’s first aid class in the community. Mrs Finch, our retired nurse neighbor, would spend her time in her garage-turned-classroom every Saturday morning. “Helping others is a skill everyone should have,” she’d say warmly. This free workshop was her way of giving back, and she ran it with quiet passion. I practiced pushing down on the plastic model, while Liam learned how to give clear directions to 911 operators. She believed that preparation could turn anyone into a lifesaver — even two teenagers like us.
She often reminded us that emergencies didn’t check our age or experience. “They can happen to anyone and anywhere — yes, even to an old nurse like me,” she’d smile, pointing to the park during our ride home. Liam and I nodded, but deep down, we thought we were learning to help strangers someday, not someone we knew well.
That “someday” came much sooner than expected. One Saturday, right after class ended, Mrs Finch was putting away the training device when she suddenly went quiet. Her face lost all color. The coffee cup she was holding dropped on the concrete floor. She leaned against the wall, one hand pressed tightly against her chest. “Boys...” she managed to whisper, before slowly sliding down to the floor.
For a moment, Liam and I just stood there, frozen in shock. Our teacher — the one who taught us how to save lives — was now lying helpless on the ground. Suddenly, I remembered her mentioning that she had a heart condition. Her words rushed back to me: “When someone collapses, do not panic, but act immediately.” I saw Liam’s eyes widen with the same realization. We looked at each other, knowing what we had to do. The most important lesson was about to begin — not on the plastic model, but on our teacher herself.

Liam and I did exactly what Mrs Finch had taught us.________________________________________
