These horses, known locally as takhi and globally as Przewalski’s horse, are unique. They are the only type that has never been trained and they are the fruits of one of the most successful ever wildlife reintroduction plans of Hustai National Park. “Horses are key to our culture. Everyone is glad to have them back,” says Dashpurev with a smile, who is in charge of Hustai National Park. Once hunted to extinction in the wild in the 1960s, Przewalski’s horses now number nearly 1,000, at three sites across Mongolia, as well as in China and Kazakhstan. The largest population — numbering 423 — is in central Mongolia’s Hustai National Park. These horses are descendants (后代) of 84 animals that were airlifted from European zoos in the 1990s. “Before the reintroduction, no one believed we could save this species,” recalls Dashpurev. Now, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has downgraded Przewalski’s horse from “critically endangered” to “endangered”, marking a significant milestone in their recovery. However, despite this success story, Mongolia faces numerous challenges in protecting its other species. Besides hunting, the climate emergency is putting more pressure. Temperatures are rising three times faster than the global average, bringing more extreme weather events that wipe out large numbers of animals. Faced with this crisis, the government has taken actions to protect wild areas. In 1998, Mongolia promised to protect 30% of its territory by 2030 — a goal adopted by 100 other countries in 2021. So far it is on 21%. Last year, the president launched a drive to plant 1 billion trees by 2030 and tough fines have had success in stopping illegal hunting. Yet these efforts are hamstrung (妨碍) by a lack of funding. “The government wants to grow the economy. That’s the key thing for them, so they are putting a lot of effort into agriculture and mining,” says Buuveibaatar, a scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, “Wildlife is ignored. As a result, some of its conservation areas are paper parks. The Przewalski’s horse reintroduction plan is an example of how to save wildlife. Now, the challenge lies in introducing this success to the rest of the country’s other wildlife.” 4. Why are these horses unique according to the passage? A. They are airlifted from European zoos. B. They are successfully introduced species. C. They are the only true wild horse species. D. They can only be photographed in Mongolia. 5. What was the public’s attitude towards saving these horses before the reintroduction? A. Relieved. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful. 6. Why is the climate emergency mentioned in Paragraph 4? A. To introduce the reasons for wildlife extinction. B. To explain its influence on wildlife in Mongolia. C. To stress the challenges facing wildlife protection. D. To express the author’s feelings about the extinction. 7. What does Buuveibaatar imply in the last paragraph? A. Hustai National Park provides a positive model. B. The government’s focus should be the economy. C. Other countries can help by following the footsteps. D. The Przewalski’s horse is the only one worth saving. C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“These horses, known locally as takhi and globally as Przewalski’s horse, are unique. They are the only type that has never been trained (这些马,在当地被称为takhi,在全球被称为普氏野马,是独一无二的。它们是唯一没有受过训练的物种)”可知,这些马独一无二是因为它们是是唯一没有受过训练的物种,是真正的野马种类。故选C项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中““Before the reintroduction, no one believed we could save this species,” recalls Dashpurev.(“在重新引入之前,没有人相信我们可以拯救这个物种,”Dashpurev回忆道)”可知,在重新引入这些马之前,公众对此持怀疑态度。 根据第四段中心句“However, despite this success story, Mongolia faces numerous challenges in protecting its other species.(然而,尽管有这样的成功故事,蒙古在保护其他物种方面面临着许多挑战)”和“Temperatures are rising three times faster than the global average, bringing more extreme weather events that wipe out large numbers of animals.(气温上升速度是全球平均水平的三倍,带来了更多的极端天气事件,导致大量动物死亡)”可推知,第四段中提及气候紧急情况旨在说明蒙古野生动物保护努力面临的其它挑战。 根据最后一段中““The government wants to grow the economy. Now, the challenge lies in introducing this success to the rest of the country’s other wildlife.”(野生动物保护协会的科学家Buuveibaatar说:“政府希望发展经济。 故选A项。 C Across human history, it’s a curious observation that while the majority of people lead lives that could be described as mediocre (平庸的), a select few rise above, making significant impacts that change the world. This difference is not simply the result of talent but of psychological and social forces that shape individual paths. One of the main reasons most people remain average is the comfort of the familiar. Humans naturally tend to seek stability and security, which often leads to a preference for routine and predictability. This desire for comfort can prevent risk-taking, which is crucial for significant breakthroughs and innovations. The fear of failure and the unknown keeps many within the limits of mediocrity, as stepping out means facing uncertainty. Education systems frequently exacerbate this pattern. They tend to prioritize standardization and regulation over creativity and critical thinking. Students are often rewarded for providing the “right” answers rather than exploring alternative solutions. This approach can limit innovative thinking and discourage them from taking intellectual risks. By the time these individuals start their careers, they are skilled at following established procedures but may lack the confidence or ability to challenge the current situations. Social expectations also play a significant role in shaping behavior. From a young age, individuals are often encouraged to follow a conventional path: good grades, stable jobs, and social approval. This leaves little room for experimentation, and those who depart from this path often face criticism. Psychological issues, such as fear of failure and self-doubt, can prevent individuals from fighting for greatness. As a result, only those with a high level of self-awareness and resilience — qualities often developed through experience and adversity (逆境) — are able to break free from social limits and pursue their own path. While the comfort of the familiar and social expectations keep many within the bounds of average, those who rise above do so by embracing risk, challenging conventions, and cultivating resilience. By understanding these factors, we can work towards creating a world where more people have the opportunity and the courage to change the world. 8. What primarily keeps most people in mediocrity? A. Preference for comfort. B. Lack of self-confidence. C. Fear of public criticism. D. Focus on short-term results. 9. Which of the following best explains “exacerbate” underlined in paragraph 3? A. Prevent. B. Worsen. C. Improve. D. Simplify. 10. What can we infer from paragraph 4? A. Receiving education is critical to making breakthroughs. B. Psychological anxiety weakens personal will in adversity. C. Most people make decisions based on social expectations. D. Inner strength enables individuals to break social limits. 11. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To discuss barriers to achieving greatness. B. To advocate critical thinking in education. C. To encourage people to challenge themselves. D. To stress the importance of embracing uncertainty. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第二段“One of the main reasons most people remain average is the comfort of the familiar.(大多数人保持平庸的主要原因之一,是熟悉带来的舒适感)”可知,偏好舒适让大多数人保持平庸。 根据划线词后文“They tend to prioritize standardization and regulation over creativity and critical thinking. Students are often rewarded for providing the “right” answers rather than exploring alternative solutions. This approach can limit innovative thinking and discourage them from taking intellectual risks.(他们往往更注重标准化和监管,而非创造力和批判性思维。学生通常因提供“正确”的答案而获得奖励,而不是探索其他解决方案。这种做法可能限制创新思维,并使他们不敢承担智力上的风险)”可知,教育体系压抑创新,让安于平庸的状态加剧,故划线词意思是“恶化,加剧”。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“As a result, only those with a high level of self-awareness and resilience — qualities often developed through experience and adversity (逆境) — are able to break free from social limits and pursue their own path.(因此,只有具备高度自我觉察和韧性的人——这些品质往往通过经历与逆境而培养出来——才能摆脱社会的束缚,走上属于自己的道路)”可知,内在的力量使个人能够突破社会的界限。 根据第一段“Across human history, it’s a curious observation that while the majority of people lead lives that could be described as mediocre (平庸的), a select few rise above, making significant impacts that change the world. This difference is not simply the result of talent but of psychological and social forces that shape individual paths.(纵观人类历史,一个有趣的观察是:尽管大多数人过着可称为平庸的生活,但少数人脱颖而出,产生了重大影响,改变了世界。这种差异并非仅仅源于天赋,而是由心理和社会因素共同塑造的个体发展路径所致)”结合文章主要分析了多数人趋于平庸的多重原因。可知,文章目的是讨论实现卓越的障碍。 D Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a fashion word in recent years, and its impact on society is growing rapidly. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision making. This technology is transforming every industry, from healthcare to finance, and is expected to revolutionize the future. One area where AI is making significant strides is healthcare. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of medial data and help doctors make more informed diagnoses and treatment decisions. This technology is particularly useful in fields such as radiology where AI algorithms can analyze medical images to detect abnormalities that may be missed by human eyes. In finance, AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and predict market trends. This technology can help traders make more informed decisions and reduce the risks of financial losses. Similarly AI-powered chatbots are being used in customer service, helping to improve response times and provide personalized support. As the use of AI grows, concerns about job displacement have also arisen. Some fear that Al-powered machines and robots will replace human workers, leading to mass unemployment. While this is a possibility, it is also important to note that AI will create new jobs in fields such as data analysis, software development, and robotics. Another major concern about AI is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the algorithms will also be biased. This issue is particularly concerning in fields such as criminal justice, where AI-powered systems are being used to make decisions about sentencing. If these algorithms are biased, they could make existing inequalities continue in the criminal justice system. Despite these concerns, the benefits of AI are numerous and undeniable. However, to ensure that these benefits are accessible to all and to address concerns about bis and discrimination, it is crucial to continue researching and developing moral AI. 12. AI outweighs humans in healthcare because it ______. A. stops financial risks. B. recognizes market tendency. C. ensures precise judgment. D. offers personalized services. 13. What is one of the major concerns of AI? A. A large number of human workers will be laid off. B. Algorithms will be out of date. C. Unfairness may arise in criminal justice system. D. New jobs will be unavailable. 14. How does the writer mainly develop this text? A. By stating facts and citing quotes. B. By presenting influences and listing examples. C. By showing different ideas and giving reasons. D. By comparing research results and offering suggestions. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Artificial Intelligence: Becoming a Fashion Word B. Artificial Intelligence: Improving Human Abilities C. Artificial Intelligence: Bettering Decision Making D. They had been friends since the first day of school, sharing laughter, secrets, and countless adventures together. However, a heated argument during a class project nearly broke their friendship. The project was about creating a presentation on environmental protection. Tom and Jack, both passionate about the topic, had different ideas on how to organize the presentation. Tom believed in a more data-driven approach, while Jack wanted to focus on touching stories. As the discussion went on, their voices grew louder and eventually they lost their tempers. They said some mean things to each other without thinking. Before they realized it, they had a huge fight. Jack left the classroom angrily, leaving Tom feeling mad and sorry for his inappropriate remarks. Days passed, and there was a lot of tension between them. They avoided each other in the hallways, and their once-friendly talks during breaks had turned into awkward silence. Their classmates noticed the change and were concerned, but attempts to help them make up seemed to be in vain. It seemed like nothing could bring them back together. One day, their teacher, Mr. Smith, noticed the strained relationship. He decided to intervene (干预). After class, he pulled Tom and Jack aside and said, “I know you two had a disagreement, but you can’t let this ruin your friendship. You both have great ideas, and this project is a chance to combine them. I want you to work it out. ” Paragraph 1: Tom and Jack looked at each other, a look of awkwardness in their eyes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Sitting down together, Tom and Jack began to talk about the project. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Tom and Jack looked at each other, a look of awkwardness in their eyes. With Mr. Smith’s words echoing in his mind, Tom was acutely aware that their teacher was right. His head hung low in shame, and from the corner of his eye, he could tell that Jack was equally consumed by a sense of guilt. Memories of the wonderful years they had spent as close friends rushed back. They knew that such a treasured friendship was too valuable to be destroyed by a single, ill-timed argument. With a long deep breath, Tom gathered the courage and broke the heavy silence. His voice with genuine sincerity, he said softly, “Jack, I am truly sorry for what I said. Hurting you was the last thing from my intention.” Paragraph 2: Sitting down together, Tom and Jack began to talk about the project. Tom, with a serious look, said, “It’s your stories that can truly make our presentation stand out and capture the audience’s attention.” Jack nodded in agreement, replying, “And it’s your data that gives our work solid credibility.” As they worked together, the tension gradually was swept away by a feeling of unity. They not only found common ground but also made their bond stronger. At that moment, they came to know that their friendship was much stronger than any small argument. Genuine friendships can thrive through mutual understanding and teamwork, empowering people to face future challenges together. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①意识到:be aware that/realize that ②毁掉:destroy/ruin ③回答:reply/answer 情绪类 ①愧疚:guilt/shame/remorse ②真诚:sincerity/genuineness 【点睛】【高分句型1】With Mr. Smith’s words echoing in his mind, Tom was acutely aware that their teacher was right. B On an early winter morning, a small group of students and tourists were taking pictures of the horses with their phones. C Across human history, it’s a curious observation that while the majority of people lead lives that could be described as mediocre (平庸的), a select few rise above, making significant impacts that change the world. D Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a fashion word in recent years, and its impact on society is growing rapidly.
