How much do you love animals? The work of photographer Joel Sartore might surprise you. He has a big plan: to travel around the world and take pictures of as many animal species as possible. His photos help people see the special beauty of every creature.
Sartore is working to take photos of all 20,000 different types of animals living in zoos, aquariums and wildlife shelters in the world. And he's already taken nearly 15,000! He hopes his photos will ask people to pay attention to this planet's most endangered creatures and to record them before they're gone. "My job is to tell their stories and hope that the world cares in time," he told The Weather Channel.
Sartore calls his project the Photo Ark, like the story of Noah's Ark, in which a large boat is built to save every type of animal in the world from a flood. He founded the Photo Ark in 2006 in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He doesn't just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment, however—he puts each animal on a black or white background with studio lights. This helps him photograph their true colours, and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant—and look each animal straight in the eye. "When people connect to animals through eye contact, we've got a real chance at changing human behaviour," Sartore says.
Sartore has more than 1.6 million followers online and a best-selling series of Photo Ark books. He asks people to buy his books and photos, give money to the Photo Ark, and support zoos, aquariums and wildlife shelters near where they live.

Body language, sometimes called "non-verbal communication", is an important tool. The way you communicate through body language can influence your success in everything from relationships to your career. Up to 93 percent of communication can be non-verbal. Here are some tips about how to communicate effectively (有效地) through your body language.
Use hand gestures when speaking.
Experts believe that people who are great speakers are more likely to use hand gestures during conversations or lectures, and they say hand gestures give listeners greater confidence in the speaker.
More complex (复杂的) gestures with two hands above the waist are connected with complex thinking.
Politicians like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Colin Powell and Tony Blair are considered effective speakers, and that's partly because they often use hand gestures.
Move throughout the room.
Don't only move your hands. Great speakers move around. They point at PPT slides, and they don't keep their distance from people. They like moving a lot.
Keeping your hands in your pockets when speaking or having a conversation will make you seem unsafe and closed off.
In contrast, if you take your hands out of your pockets and keep your palms upward, you will be considered that you are likable and believable.
Have good posture (姿势).
If you go to a job interview, and you have bad posture, you will probably make a bad impression on the interviewer.
People will associate (联想) bad posture with weak confidence or lack of attention. They might even think you're lazy and unmotivated if you don't sit up straight.
To have good posture, your head should be up and your back should be straight. Lean (倾斜) forward if you're seated. Sit tall at the front edge of your chair, and lean forward to show you're interested.
( )26. What can we learn from the text?
A. The more complex your gestures are, the less complex your thinking is.
B. About 7 percent of communication is verbal.
C. Great speakers seldom move around when speaking.
D. Most politicians seldom use hand gestures.
( )27. Why are great speakers more likely to use hand gestures?
A. It is considered to be impolite to not use hand gestures.
B. Hand gestures help them think clearly.
C. They want to show they are different.
D. They think hand gestures give listeners greater confidence in them.
( )28. According to the passage, what makes you seem insecure (不安全的) and closed off?
A. Keeping your hands in your pockets when speaking.
B. Taking your hands out of your pockets and keeping your palms upward.
C. Pointing at PPT slides, and standing close to people.
D. Sitting at the front edge of your chair, and leaning forward slightly.
( )29. Which of the following can help you make a good impression on the interviewer?
①Keeping your back straight.
②Making different gestures with hands.
③Sitting at the front edge of your chair.
④Leaning forward to show your interest.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④

In September, 2023, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned to the Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). He set a record by spending 371 days on the ISS. His efforts were celebrated, but a tomato mystery followed him home.
During his time on the ISS, Mr Rubio, along with other astronauts, worked on lots of experiments. One of the experiments was to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables to help feed astronauts on long trips through space.
Mr Rubio loved working with a little plant of tomato and seeing it grow. When the plant finally produced tomatoes, Mr Rubio had put the tomato in a plastic bag and showed it to some students on a video call. He believed that he had tied the bag to the part of the ISS. But later, he couldn't find that bag of the tomato! Because there is so little gravity on the ISS, things can easily float away. Mr Rubio always believed that was what had happened to the tomato. But the other members of the ISS enjoyed teasing Mr Rubio about the missing tomato. They said, "You ate the tomato in space, but just didn't want to admit it!" It became a joke among them.
“I didn’t,” said Mr Rubio. “I wanted to find it so I could prove it.” He spent many hours searching, but found nothing. He believed that the tomato had dried out, or someone else threw it away.
Recently, the mystery was solved on a video call. “We found the tomato,” NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli said. She said she could now clear Mr Rubio’s name. But NASA has not said where the crew found it or what it looked like when found.

B. Mr Rubio put the tomato in a bag and showed it.
C. Students made jokes about the tomato through a video call.
D. Mr Rubio threw the tomato away easily because of gravity.
( )33. What does the underlined word “teasing” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Criticizing. B. Kidding. C. Helping. D. Admiring.

As pet owners, if you want to build a strong relationship with your pets, it is important to understand their body language. Pets use body language to express many feelings, from happiness to worry. 36
Pets may have different signs when they are under stress or feel worried. These can include heavy breathing, hiding or the changes in sounds. 37 Other pets, like rabbits, may stay very quiet or refuse food.

Your pet’s behaviour can also tell you if it feels sick or hurt. Changes in body language may appear. If an animal walks slowly, avoids touch, or licks (舔) one spot a lot, it might be sick or feel uncomfortable. 39
Understanding your pet’s body language helps build trust and makes your pet feel safe. 40 Therefore, it’s important to read your pet’s body language.

A Chinese company, DS, is making space travel possible! It sold two space tickets for 1 million yuan each during a live stream (直播). It will be a very short but exciting journey. The travellers will take a 12-minute space trip in 2027. The rocket will fly them 100-150 kilometres above the Earth. That's much higher than airplanes fly. During the trip, they'll feel weightless for five minutes and see the beautiful blue Earth from space. Before flying, the travellers must pass health checks.
Space travel may sound like something from a science movie, but it's already happening in some countries. In 2021, two companies in the US sent travellers to space. DS isn't the only Chinese company with big dreams. Another Chinese company, CAIS, plans its first manned flight in 2028, with tickets costing 2-3 million yuan. Their trip might last longer.
To cut down the ticket prices, many companies are making reusable rockets. These rockets land safely after flying and can be used again. This saves a lot of money.
Would you like to float in space and see our blue planet? Keep dreaming—someday it could be your turn!
