Have you ever woken up early in the morning and heard birds singing loudly? Before the sun rises, they start making noise like a lively morning party.
There are about 10,000 species (种类) of birds in the world. Songbirds make up nearly half of them. They usually start singing as early as 4 am. The first birds to start their singing are usually blackbirds, robins, wrens and larks.
Do you know why birds start singing so early? Firstly, they sing to find a mate (配偶). Birds choose mates by their songs because a good song means a healthy and strong mate. Birds also sing to let others know who’s around and what area is their home. Each bird has its own way of singing. One bird might sing“ tweet-tweet-trill”, while another goes “chirp-chirp-peep”.
There was a common idea that birds sang a lot in the morning because there was less wind and air movement during the time so that their sounds could travel farther. But researchers (研究人员) at the University of Western Ontario disproved this idea in 2003. They played recorded bird songs during the morning and at noon. The study found that morning songs didn’t travel farther, but the quiet morning air made them sound clearer-like when you talk in a quiet room!
Next time you hear birds singing in the morning, remember, they’re not just making noise. They’re talking to each other, looking for love, and protecting their home.
43. What’s probably the number of songbird species?
A. About 1,000. B. About 5,000. C. About 7,000. D. About 10,000.
44. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Birds’ different ways of singing. B. Why birds sing early in the morning.
C. The differences between bird songs. D. How birds communicate with each other.
45. What does the underlined word“ disproved” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. agreed with B. disagreed with C. believed D. came up with
46. What was a finding of the 2003 research?
A. Morning bird songs sound clearer because it’s quieter around.
B. Birds like to sing in the morning because the air is fresher.
C. Birds sing louder at noon than in the morning.
D. Bird songs travel farther in the morning.
47. Why did the writer write the passage?
A. To compare different bird species. B. To tell a special experience.
C. To ask people not to kill birds. D. To explain a fun thing.
D
A Firework (烟花) Show on Himalayas (喜马拉雅山): Art or Harm?
Recently, a firework show named Rising Dragon lit up the Himalayas, but it quickly turned from praise to controversy (争议) . Held by an outdoor brand and artist Cai Guoqiang at 5,500 meters above sea level, the show created a “dragon” with colorful fireworks along the mountains. While some called it “stunning (惊人的) art”, many raised questions about its environmental impact (环境影响). The Himalayas have a really fragile (脆弱的) ecosystem. Scientists explain that a single leaf of grass there takes years to grow, and break could take many years to repair.
Scientists worry that noise and smoke might scare (惊吓) wildlife preparing for winter, and chemical dust could keep in the cold dry air. State media like People’s Daily criticized (批评) the event, saying art and business must respect nature. True respect for nature isn’t showing off with fireworks on sacred mountains, but staying humble. The brand and artist have apologized (道歉), but real action to fix any harm is more important.
This event teaches us a lesson: beauty should never come at nature’s expense. When art meets fragile ecosystems, rules and respect must come first.
48. Why do the Himalayas have an extremely fragile ecosystem?
A. Because plants there take years to grow and break could take many years to repair.
B. Because there is no living plants or animals.
C. Because animals don’t like it.
D. Because humans usually play fireworks there.
49. Where was the firework show held?
A. In a big city B. On the Himalayas C. Near a lake D. In a forest
50. What does the underlined word“it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The Himalayas B. The dragon C. The firework show D. The mountain
51. Why are scientists worried about the firework show?
A. It might attract too many tourists.
B. It might break the environment and wildlife.
C. It might be too expensive.
D. It might not be beautiful enough.
52. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Firework shows are beautiful artworks.
B. The Himalayas have beautiful mountains.
C. Everything should respect nature, including art and business.
D. Cai Guoqiang is a famous artist.

【答案】43. B 44. B 45. B 46. A 47. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,介绍了鸟类晨鸣的现象、种类比例、原因以及相关的科学研究。
【43题详解】
根据第二段第二句“There are about 10,000 species…of birds in the world. Songbirds make up nearly half of them.”
根据第四段最后一句“The study found that…when you talk in a quiet room!”
【答案】48. A 49. B 50. C 51. B 52. C

【48题详解】
根据第一段“Scientists explain that a single leaf of grass there takes years to grow, and break could take many years to repair.”可知,喜马拉雅生态脆弱是因为当地植物生长周期漫长,一旦遭到破坏需要很多年才能修复。
【49题详解】
根据文章标题以及第一段“a firework show named Rising Dragon lit up the Himalayas”可知,这场烟花秀举办在喜马拉雅山上。
【50题详解】
划线词it出自第一段“While some called it ‘stunning art’”,前文核心描述对象是这场喜马拉雅烟花秀,因此it指代这场烟花表演。
