Before moving to India, I had always approached job hunting with a simple and clear mind. In my home country, job ads usually listed not only what was required, but also what was offered, such as benefits, main duties, and pay ranges. This openness allowed job seekers to aim for positions that fit their skills and hopes. Besides, early talks by phone or email helped find any mismatches early, saving time for both sides. It was basically a process where information moved in two ways.
But the job market in India works quite differently. Job openings here are often posted with unclear words, giving little information about the real work and seldom showing pay levels. As a result, job hunters have to send in dozens of applications for jobs only loosely connected to their field. This would not be a problem if employers gave clear answers. I do not ask for long explanations. A short note on what the job involves and what it pays would stop wasted efforts on both sides.
As a person applying for a posted job, I tried to get clear facts about what they needed and what they could pay. I made it very clear that I would not take any job that failed to meet my needs, and I was told this was fine before my interview.
But I knew the trip was wasted after about four minutes. The manager spent the next ten minutes typing numbers hard into a calculator before saying my pay hopes were beyond their budget, though he must have known this before I came. All this is because face-to-face talks are thought more important than truly listening to what job hunters say. I am not so much angry that they waste my time, but that they waste their own time for no good reason. Those at interviews do not learn about the job, but only find out how much patience they have.
24. What does the author say about job hunting in his home country?
A. It was an individual information gathering. B. It was a two-way information exchange.
C. It was characterized by give-and-take. D. It required many face-to-face meetings.
25. What is the writing purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To recommend Indian job websites. B. To compare salaries in two countries.
C. To show problems with unclear job ads. D. To explain the reason for the job move.
26. What did the author do before going to the interview?
A. He sent many applications. B. He discussed pay with the manager.
C. He studied the company’s finance. D. He confirmed his needs were acceptable.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. My First Job in a New Country B. A Failed Interview Experience
C. Differences in Interview Cultures D. Silence Costs More Than Words

You spend time with friends, share meals with family, and sit close to people you care about. These moments feel simple, but something deeper may be happening. Your body may be changing with every interaction.
Scientists from the University of East Anglia found that social life can shape the bacteria living in your gut (肠道). Many of them help your body work better. Each person has a unique mix. Food and environment affect it, but now scientists see that social interaction also plays a role.
To understand this idea, researchers studied the Seychelles warbler, a small bird that lives on a tiny island and rarely leaves it, which makes it ideal for the study in the long run. “We gathered hundreds of stool (粪便) samples from birds with known social roles—breeding pairs, helpers and non-helpers living in the same group, and in different groups. This allowed us to compare the gut bacteria of birds that interacted closely at the nest versus those that did not,” noted Dr. Lee.
The results showed a clear pattern. Birds that lived together had more similar gut bacteria than those living apart. Besides, interaction matters even more. Birds that spent more time together had gut bacteria that looked more alike. This means daily contact allows bacteria to pass between individuals. Birds that worked closely together, especially at the nest, shared more of these bacteria. These birds fed chicks, stayed near each other, and interacted often.
What does this mean for people? Sharing a home or sitting close creates chances for bacteria to move between people.
“Whether you’re living with a partner, housemate, or family, your daily interactions—from hugging and sharing food-prep spaces—may encourage the exchange of gut microbes,” explained Dr. Lee.
The idea of sharing bacteria may sound strange at first, but not all bacteria are harmful. In fact, many of them help the body function better. Some aid in digestion, while others protect against disease and keep the body balanced. Because of this, sharing beneficial bacteria may even support better health within a household.
This research shows that human connection goes beyond emotions. It also affects the body in hidden ways.
28. Why did researchers choose the Seychelles warblers for their study?
A. They have an ideal gut bacteria structure.
B. Their social roles are more clearly divided.
C. They love living in closely related large groups.
D. Their limited migration is perfect for the study.
29. Which influenced the similarity of gut bacteria among birds according to the study?
A. Close social interactions. B. The way they fed.
C. The type of task they did. D. Different bird species.
30. What does the author try to say in the last two paragraphs?
A. Living separately will lead to poor gut health.
B. The number of friends affects gut bacteria diversity.
C. Human social bonds are an invisible health resource.
D. People’s daily habits determine the level of happiness.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Scientists Discovered a New Species of Bacteria
B. Close Relationship May Be Changing Your Gut Bacteria
C. Sharing Meals Prevents the Spread of Harmful Bacteria
D. Human Connections Can Be Developed Through Activities

Grief can bring waves of heartache but for most people those feelings gradually fade. For some, they don’t. The loss remains intense, persistent, and difficult to handle in daily life. This condition, known as prolonged grief disorder (PGD), was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5) in 2022.
“There’s something blocking their ability to finally say ‘I have to accept this,’” says Katherine Shear, director of the Center for Prolonged Grief at Columbia University. Researchers are now beginning to understand why PGD may involve breakdowns in the brain systems that govern attachment and reward, according to a 2026 study published in Trends in Neurosciences. In people with prolonged grief those systems may continue to signal that the lost loved one is still expected, creating conflict between memory and reality.
PGD is a “long-term, intense painful reaction to loss”, says Holly Prigerson at Weill Cornell Medicine. Individuals remain “stuck”, marked by persistent yearning and not accepting the reality of the loss. Grief is considered PGD when symptoms last longer than 12 months.
How does it affect the brain? Regions involved in reward and motivation appear to remain active. “People with severe grief are still expecting the existence of what is gone, making it harder for the brain to update and accept the loss,” says Shear. Research published in 2020 also found that PGD involves different activity patterns in the amygdala
PGD can lead to a higher risk of death. One explanation is that prolonged grief keeps the body in a lasting stress response. High levels of cortisol can hurt the heart system and interfere with immune function.
The most common treatment is Prolonged Grief Therapy. “The treatment focuses on helping people accept the reality of the loss and restore their capacity for well-being, but formal recognition of PGD is crucial, as it ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for those stuck in this disabling experience.” Shear explains.
32. What is PGD according to the text?
A. Grief that can’t be treated. B. Grief that brings heartaches.
C. Grief that comes from great loss. D. Grief that doesn’t ease with time.
33. What does the study published in 2026 mainly focus on?
A. Who PGD affects. B. What PGD brings.
C. How PGD works. D. Why PGD spreads.
34. How does PGD affect humans according to Katherine Shear?
A. It disturbs brain functions. B. It reduces memory activity.
C. It weakens the immune system. D. It shortens people’s lifetime.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Official identification of PGD leads to better medical help.
B. Well-being can be recovered with short-term PGD therapy.
C. Reality acceptance of the loss is the main goal of curing PGD.
D. Recognition of PGD largely relies on patients’ self-awareness.

Dogs, more so than almost any other domestic pets, are desperate for human eye contact. 36 And according to a study that pull at the heartstrings might be exactly why dogs can give us those looks at all.
37 Studying the two animals is a bit like breaking open a four-legged time capsule. A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs’ faces are structured for complex expressions in a way that wolves aren’t.
For the study, a team looked at two muscles (the RAOL and LAOM muscles) that work together to widen and open a dog’s eyes, causing them to appear bigger and more lovely, which we read as distinctly humanlike. The muscles form two short, straight lines, which connect the ring of muscle around a dog’s eye to either end of the brow above. 38 Therefore, they concluded that the origin of these complex facial expressions is after dogs splitting from wolves. Research has also shown that when dogs work these muscles, humans respond more positively. This isn’t simply a coincidental love story, in which the eyes of two species just happen to meet across a crowded planet. 39
For a species to change quickly, a pretty powerful force must be acting on it. 40 We connect more deeply with animals capable of making humanlike facial movements, so dogs have evolved to look like our own human babies to be selected for adoption.
A. Dogs are very similar to wolves.
B. And that is where humans come in.
C. It’s hard for most people to resist the shining eyes of a little dog.
D. Dogs split off from their gray wolf relatives as many as 33,000 years ago.
E. But in the four gray wolves the researchers looked at, neither muscle was present.
F. Just like other best partnerships, this one is more likely the result of years of evolution.
G. Researchers have long been interested in the ways dogs make eye contact with humans.

Jessica breathed in the familiar smell of dried grass and horses when entering the building for horses. She was back for another summer at Green Meadow Farm’s riding camp. Her advisor, Rose, walked beside her. Jessica searched every corner, hoping to see Piper, her favourite horse she had bonded with last year. They had even won second place in the annual obstacle course race (障碍赛跑), where Piper had skillfully moved through the poles. Jessica loved everything about Piper, from her gentleness to the way Piper’s soft nose tickled (使发痒) her hand whenever she fed her apples.
“I can’t wait to ride Piper,” Jessica told Rose. Rose smiled. “I know you love Piper, but we need to save her for some new riders.” Jessica’s heart sank, but she nodded in understanding. “How about you trying riding Harley?” Rose said. Jessica was a little frightened by the giant male horse Rose pointed to. Even though Harley was beautiful with his shiny hair, he looked restless. Rose could sense Jessica’s anxiety. “Don’t worry. He just needs an experienced rider to help train him.”
Jessica cautiously approached him, but Harley moved away. As Jessica touched his back, he appeared restless and let out a loud cry, making Jessica even more nervous. An annoyed Jessica led an unwilling Harley outside. She climbed on top of him and headed to the obstacle course. However, when reaching the fence, Harley planted his feet in the dirt, refusing to take another step.
The first few days together were full of challenges. Harley refused jumps, galloped (飞奔) out of control, and once, frightened by a bird, he even went up on his back legs and threw Jessica into the air when she pulled the reins (缰绳) tight. Feeling painful and discouraged, she turned to Rose. “I really miss Piper and her gentleness. Harley is too hard to control.” Patting her on the shoulder, Rose said thoughtfully, “It’s okay to be scared, but do remember Harley has his own fears. If you are nervous, you will make him nervous. If you are confident, he will feel confident. If you show him trust, he will trust you.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley.
The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race.
Text 1
M: The supermarket isn’t very far. It’s about a ten-minute drive.
W: Oh, I don’t have a car. I’m on foot.
M: Well, it’s not a very easy walk. You should take the bus, The number fifteen stops right over there.
W: OK. Thanks.
Text 2
W: Oh, no. I can’t find my keys.
M: Check your coat pocket.
W: No, they’re not here. Oh, where did I put them? Ah, here they are, in the bag beside my new jacket.
Text 3
M: How did your presentation go?
W: They seemed quite impressed with it. It really paid off working late for a few days.
Text 4
M: Here’re the potatoes. Do we need anything else?
W: A dozen eggs and a few cans of vegetable soup.
M: If you go and get the eggs, I’ll meet you at the cash desk with the soup.
Text 5
W: Are you working at your uncle’s restaurant this summer again?
M: I’d like to do something else. I think I’ll do something in the garden. I’d prefer to work there.
Text 6
W: So, Pete, are you happy at your new school?
M: Yeah, very. People there are friendly and I’ve made a lot of new friends. It’s good because we work well together in class, too.
W: That’s good.
M: And it’s great learning a language. I’m doing Chinese this year. It’s really hard, even though we’ve got a lovely teacher, who really loves her subject.
W: Sounds good.
M: And it’s a modem building, with a sports field and a large library. There’s a big courtyard too, where you can sit outside and relax between lessons. There was nowhere like that at my primary school.
Text 7
W: Good morning. Can I help you?
M: Good morning. I think there should be a room booked for me, in the name of Tony Marshall.
W: Umm, just a moment. Yes, a single room?
M: That’s right. We’re attending a conference here.
W: Yes. It is from the third to the thirteenth, right?
M: Yes, until the thirteenth.
W: Right. Mr. Marshall, you are in Room 207.
M: Thank you very much. Do you have a guidebook of Manchester? I want to go out later.
W: Yes, here you are.
M: And can you recommend any good places to eat? I’m hungry now.
W: Why don’t you try Chinatown? There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants there.
M: Oh, I love Chinese food. Thanks.
Text 8
W: Bruce, could you help me set the table? I have to watch the roast chicken in the oven very carefully.
M: Sure, I’m glad to. But I don’t really know what to do.
W: OK. The spoons are in the top drawer. And the plates are in the bottom drawer. Oh, yeah, could you please bring the water glasses from the lazy Susan?
M: Whoa, slow down. Who is “lazy Susan”?
W: A lazy Susan isn’t a person. It’s a cupboard in the kitchen that holds dishes, or canned food, or cups, etc.
M: Now I know what it means to have meals in a foreign country. I have to learn a lot of things with strange names.
Text 9
M: Hey Maggie! How’s the job search going?
W: Really well! I already have two offers.
M: That’s great!
W: It is. But they’re so different. One of the jobs is a sales representative for a big computer company. That job would be good because I could travel to Europe and Asia. I’d love that. And the other good thing about it is the pay. I could really make lots of money, as long as I sold a lot of computers.
M: Right. Your pay would depend on how many computers you sold every month. That could be a challenge. So, what’s the other job?
W: It’s a computer company, too, but a much smaller one. The job has good points, too. I’d have a steady income — the same salary every month. It would be good to know exactly how much money I could earn in every month. And it’s a small company that’s growing. I could be a manager in a few years.
M: That’s good.
W: Yeah, I don’t know though. But I’ve been wanting to travel. Maybe it’s time for a challenge.
Text 10
W: And now to move on to our competition this month. Most of us think we can write a story well, here’s your chance to show that you can! Your story should be no longer than 800 words, although it can be as few as 500. So, what sort of story should you write? We’ve had science fiction and crime stories in competitions before, but this time, we want a thriller — if you send in a comedy, I’m afraid it won’t win. You may want to write about your own town or city, but we’re asking for stories set in the countryside — we think that gives everyone more chances to use their imagination. You can choose the season yourself — you might like winter because it’s dark and cold, or summer because it’s hot and sunny. The judges are well-known writers themselves: Jack Harris wrote an award-winning novel, The Lion, and Carol Simmons is the editor of the magazine Creative Writing, as well as the author of many short stories. You can email your stories directly to us. The email address is: shortstory@StarRadio.co.uk, and the closing date July 12th. Any stories we receive after this date will not be judged. The winning story will be put onto our website for everyone to read. There are several prizes including books and CDs, and the winner will be given a notebook computer. That should encourage everyone to try and write a good story!

I am Li Hua. Recently, our school’s English newspaper conducted a survey among Senior 3 students on their travel plans after the college entrance examination. The results are clearly shown in the bar chart.
As is revealed in the chart, about half of the students prefer natural places. They argue that breathing fresh air and relaxing in nature can help them get rid of the long-term study pressure. Meanwhile, 30% of the students choose to visit historic spots, hoping to experience traditional Chinese culture and enrich their historical knowledge. Foreign cities are also popular, attracting 19% of the students, who are eager to broaden their horizons by traveling abroad.
As for me, I will choose to visit a historic city like Xi’an. It is a good chance for me to appreciate the charm of our own culture. I can feel the great wisdom of our ancestors along the way.
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley. She took a deep breath, allowing Rose’s wisdom to dissolve her own anxiety. The next morning, she didn’t head for the obstacle course. Instead, she stood quietly by Harley, offering him an apple. At first, Harley eyed her suspiciously, but the stillness slowly drew him in. He took the apple, his soft lips brushing her hand without fear. Later, whenever Harley felt restless, she simply patted his neck firmly, whispering, “It’s okay! I’m here with you.” Rose witnessed their closer relationship and nodded approvingly. It was in these small, quiet victories that the fragile thread of trust began to weave into an unbreakable bond.
The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race. At the starting line, she leaned to Harley, murmuring, “My partner, let’s work as one.” The first jumps were in perfect harmony. Then came the challenging water obstacle. Harley slowed in alarm. Jessica gently loosened the reins, saying confidently, “You can do this, Harley. I trust you!” Feeling her faith, Harley gathered his powerful muscles, soaring over the water smoothly. They crossed the finish line second. Rose congratulated them, “You two are a perfect match!” Jessica hugged her gratefully and then wrapped her arms around Harley’s sweaty neck. She eventually understood the real prize wasn’t a ribbon, but the unspoken language of trust they would carry long after the summer ended.
定位原文:第一条项目描述 “ride safely in an air-conditioned coach with reclining seats and an onboard restroom for comfort and convenience”
B 项 “免费享用午餐” 与原文 “eat lunch at your own expense(午餐自费)” 完全相反。
D 项 “驾驶私家车” 与原文 “removes the trouble of arguing over who is the driver(免去了安排司机的麻烦)” 矛盾,行程统一乘坐大巴,无需自驾。
2答案:C
定位原文:第二条项目说明 “Please note that children four years old and younger do not need purchased tickets.”
It was basically a process where information moved in two ways.”
D 项 “需要多次面谈” 与原文 “early talks by phone or email(前期通过电话邮件沟通)” 矛盾。
I made it very clear that I would not take any job that failed to meet my needs, and I was told this was fine before my interview.”
定位原文:第三段 “a small bird that lives on a tiny island and rarely leaves it, which makes it ideal for the study in the long run.”
9答案:A
Birds that spent more time together had gut bacteria that looked more alike. This means daily contact allows bacteria to pass between individuals.”
定位原文:倒数第二段 “sharing beneficial bacteria may even support better health within a household”,最后一段 “human connection goes beyond emotions. It also affects the body in hidden ways.”
定位原文:第一段 “for most people those feelings gradually fade. For some, they don’t. The loss remains intense, persistent... This condition, known as prolonged grief disorder (PGD)”
解析:PGD 的核心特征是悲伤情绪不会随时间逐渐消退,反而长期持续、难以缓解,即 “Grief that doesn’t ease with time”。
Researchers are now beginning to understand why PGD may involve breakdowns in the brain systems that govern attachment and reward, according to a 2026 study”
14答案:A
15答案:A
定位原文:最后一段 “formal recognition of PGD is crucial, as it ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment”

答案:has gained
答案:where
The
答案:to appreciate
allow sb. to do sth.
“make it + adj.”
答案:but /yet
答案:without
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley.)
The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race.)

Her videos show the ________ (elegant) of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
The study of gut bacteria has revealed the hidden link between social life and ________ (healthy).
1. sightseeing 2. immune 3. gradually 4. elegance 5. health
Which tour is most suitable for a visitor who only has half a day and prefers independent exploration? A. Napa and Sonoma Wine Country Tour. B. Alcatraz with San Francisco Bay Cruise. C. Muir Woods & Sausalito Half-Day Tour. D. None of the above.
答案:C
解析:根据第三篇「half-day tour」和「explore at your own pace」可知,缪尔森林半日游符合「时间短、可自由探索」的需求。
I am not so much angry that they waste my time, as that they waste their own time for no good reason.
结构拆解:not so much...as...
We gathered hundreds of stool samples from birds with known social roles—breeding pairs, helpers and non-helpers living in the same group, and in different groups.
We gathered hundreds of stool samples from birds ② with known social roles
语境动作题:第 43 题 tightly(紧紧地)、第 48 题 relaxed(放松)、第 52 题 filled(填满),都需结合人物情绪判断动作状态。
His small hands held the metal bars tightly.
He giggled. That was a small sound but it filled the space between us.
His fingers loosening as he looked at the ride.
Kindness needs no grand stage — sometimes, a silly joke is just enough.

The book, ________ writer is a famous artist, tells stories of traditional craftsmanship.
She stood there, ________ (watch) the kids play happily.
The official praised the girl ________ speaking ill of others.
The program is designed to make rural culture more ________ (access) to the public.
1. whose 2. watching 3. without 4. accessible
Recently, our school did a survey on Senior 3 students’ travel plans after the college entrance exam. 50% of students choose natural places, because they want to relax and reduce stress. 30% choose historic spots to learn about traditional culture. 19% want to go to foreign cities to broaden their horizons. For me, I will go to Xi’an, a historic city, to experience Chinese culture.
Recently, a survey has been conducted by our school English newspaper about post-gaokao travel plans among Senior Three students, whose results are vividly shown in the bar chart. As the data reveals, natural scenic spots top the list, with around 50% of students picking them as their first choice. They hold the view that getting close to nature helps them release long-term academic pressure and refresh themselves. Meanwhile, historic sites account for 30%, attracting students eager to explore traditional Chinese culture and enrich their historical knowledge. Foreign cities also enjoy popularity among 19% of students, who expect to broaden their global vision through overseas trips. Personally, I will set off for Xi’an, a time-honored historic city. Not only can it satisfy my curiosity about ancient Chinese civilization, but it also allows me to feel the wisdom of our ancestors face to face.
As is shown in the chart.../ The data reveals that.../...rank first /account for /make up
The main reason is that.../ This is because.../..., which helps...
From my perspective / As far as I’m concerned / Personally
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley. She took a deep breath, letting Rose’s words sink in and calming her own frustration first. The next morning, she didn’t rush to the obstacle course. Instead, she leaned gently against the fence of the horse shed, holding a fresh apple in her palm. At first, Harley tossed his head uneasily, eyes alert. But Jessica didn’t move. She just spoke softly, calling his name again and again. Slowly, Harley stepped forward, took the apple with his warm soft nose, and chewed quietly. Day after day, Jessica spent time with him: brushing his coat, walking him around the grassland, and patting his neck firmly whenever he panicked. Gradually, Harley’s restlessness faded, and he would nudge Jessica’s hand gently when she approached. Trust, just like Rose said, was growing silently between them.
The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race. At the starting line, Jessica leaned forward, pressing her cheek lightly against Harley’s neck and whispering, “We’re a team. I trust you.” The race started smoothly. They cleared low fences and weaved through poles in perfect harmony. Then came the wide water jump — the very spot that had once terrified Harley. He slowed down, hooves tapping nervously at the edge. Jessica didn’t yank the reins. Instead, she softened her grip, and said in a steady voice, “Come on, boy. I’m right here.” Sensing her calmness and trust, Harley gathered his strength and leaped gracefully over the water. They crossed the finish line in second place, just like Jessica and Piper had done a year before. But this time, the prize was far more than a ribbon. It was the silent bond of trust, built with patience and love, that would stay with both Jessica and Harley long after the summer ended.
