B Robert Taylor talks about his art show Like all children, I was always getting myself and the kitchen table in a mess when I first took an interest in painting. Unlike many kids, who give up activities like art for other subjects when they go through school, I continued painting throughout my childhood. Now, after years of enjoyment, I’ve finally decided to display some of my works by holding an show at Glebe Street library. I’ve never had any formal art training. When I was trying to decide what I should study at university, art as a subject never entered my head. I always thought my parents wanted me to follow a subject that would be useful when I was looking for a job, so I ended up taking a business course. And during my time at university, I seldom painted. It wouldn’t have been easy to paint anyway as I lived in school and had very little space. I kept an interest in art though and visited local exhibitions whenever I could, but that was about it. It was later in my thirties while I was working that I discovered my love of the activity again. Since then I’ve made a point of spending at least one evening a week painting. However, my works have only ever been seen by trusted friends. They’ve always given me plenty of support and encouragement. But I’ve always wondered what strangers would think. Maybe they could give me an honest opinion of my ability. The library has offered me a room for the show. They’ve asked me to supply questionnaires about the event and I’ve included a section for visitors’ comments about the works. I’m very much looking forward to reading these opinions. 24. What can we know about the writer from paragraph 1? A. He kept painting in his childhood. B. He has held several great art shows. C. He liked cooking when he was a child. D. He gave up other subjects for art in school. 25. Why did the writer choose a business course instead of art in university? A. He had no formal art training. B. His parents forced him to do so. C.The business course helps in job-hunting. D. Jobs in business were well-paid. 26. What did the writer do about art in university? A. He painted a lot in school. B. He visited art exhibitions. C. He organized art activities. D. He did part-time jobs about art. 27.Which of the following words best describe the writer? A. Hardworking but shy. B. Creative but unlucky. C. Positive and warm-hearted. D. Determined and talented. C For teenagers and their parents, middle school, the two words can cause much excitement as well as anxiety and fear. Kids are, all of a sudden, really growing up.Their bodies are changing in unexpected ways; they’re shedding their childhood styles, and trying on new ones, for better and—sometimes—for worse. They are forming new friendships and expecting better academic performances in the classroom. The new graphic novel, Curlfriends: New In Town, written and drawn by author and artist Sharee Miller, reminds us of the many possibilities and excitements mixed within those challenging years. The book follows 12-year-old Charlie Harper, beginning around her first day of middle school. She is tired of letting other people label her and ready to take control of her own story. Starting with her look, she decides to reshape herself. There are a series of new changes and meetings, where Charlie is also facing various decisions, new things and new relationships. She experiences puzzle and a lack of self-confidence, but also gains a new friendship and a better understanding of herself. The one constant thing in Charlie's life is her affection of drawing and art, through which she ultimately figures out how to mark her place in this new world — her middle school. Curlfriends is a delightful book, packed with sunny illustrations, even as it also cuts into the heart of the challenging tensions during this intermediate stage of life. Charlie’s new friends feel like most imperfect friendships. They might argue with each other, but the overall feeling is sweet. I love the fact that the book is about day-to-day life, which is rare. Along with other popular middle school graphic novels, Curlfriends is a book about finding one’s passions while facing newfound responsibilities and independence in changing social settings. Curlfriends is as much about expressions of self-pride and self-respect as it is about showing care for others. 28. What does the underlined word “shedding” refer to in paragraph 1? A. Improving. B. Recalling. C. Getting rid of. D. Holding on to. 29. What helps Charlie mark her place in middle school? A. Her right decisions. B. Her new friends. C. Her love for art. D. Her teachers’ guidance. 30. What does the author like about Curlfriends? A. Its views are well-expressed. B. Its characters are unique and charming. C. It has bright illustrations. D. It captures an ordinary everyday reality. 31. Who is Sharee Miller’s book targeted at? A. Parents. B. Young teenagers. C. Teachers. D. Art students. D We all have a tendency to fake laugh when others try to make a joke. Though it might feel rude not to laugh when your boss try to say something funny, pretending to do so might not be much better. It turns out people are pretty good at separating truly spirited laughs from fake ones. But how can they possible know the difference? Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles studied the differences between real and fake laughter, they found some of the sounds associated with genuine laughter is “really hard to fake.” In their study, the researchers determined that subjects were only fooled by 37 percent of fake laughter. The most obvious factor telling real laughter from fake laughter is the number of breaths taken in between sounds. Seeing as it takes more effort and concentration to fake a laugh, people tend to pause more in between their “ha-ha’s” when they’re faking it. Evidently, that pausing is pretty noticeable. “A fake laugh is basically an imitation of a real laugh, but produced with a slightly different set of vocal muscles controlled by a different part of our brain,” Greg Bryant, the lead UCLA researcher on the study, explained. Carolyn McGettigan, a scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London, conducted a 2014 study that recorded participants’ brain responses as they listened to the same people produce genuine laughter as opposed to fake laughter. She found when participants heard a fake laugh, they activated regions of the brain associated with mentalizing in an attempt to understand the other person’s emotional and mental state. So, while we may understand that certain social situations sometimes require fake laughter, most of the time, our emotional intelligence is just too smart to buy into them. 32. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To show us a tendency. B. To introduce the topic of the text. C. To teach us how to laugh politely. D. To prove the importance of laugh. 33. What is the most noticeable factor between real laughter and fake laughter? A. The length of the laughter. B. Muscles one uses to make the laugh. C. Times one pauses during the laugh. D. Breaths one takes in between sounds. 34. Which of the following will Greg Bryant agree with? A. Real laughter and fake laughter are hard to tell apart. B. Real laughter doesn’t need to be controlled by our brain. C. Real laughter and fake laughter are linked to different parts of the brain. D. Real laughter and fake laughter are made using the same set of muscles. 35. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. People can tell fake laughter. B. Fake laughter can be bought. C. People like fake laughter. D. Fake laughter is needed in all social situations. 第二节 (共 5 小题, 每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone benefits from exercise, no matter their age, sex or physical ability. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand him, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone. One day, after class, Ms Lau asked Alex to her office with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with joy. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.” Alex’s heart raced wildly, the thought of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and frightening.
