Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www.buddhanet.net/festival.htm
Songkran—Thailand
Dates: 13 th-15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol—Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing—Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year—Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.

Catarina Rosa Morais Chato had heart surgery when she was just 6 months old to repair a hole in her heart. The operation was effective in closing the hole, but four years later, she developed pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a type of high blood pressure in the heart and lungs that can be linked with congenital (先天的) heart disease — and for which there is no cure.
Her symptoms included coughing, exhaustion, chest pain and feeling faint, especially when climbing stairs. She was told to stop all forms of exercise, since physical activity would be too draining on her body. “My dream of dancing died that day,” she says, adding that she felt lonely when she couldn’t join her friends on the sports field.
Following her diagnosis (诊断), she quickly began treatment to help manage her symptoms, which enabled her to live a fairly normal life. That includes working as a personal care assistant, helping nurses in the same hospital where she was born. At first, she found the long hours on her feet very tiring. But thanks to a flexible schedule, as well as learning to go at her own pace, “I exceed (超出) my expectations,” she says.
She’s also found love: “My fiance, Tiago, has always supported me. He comes with me to cardiology visits, reminds me to take my medication and does things like carry the shopping bag for me.”
Reflecting on the challenges she has overcome, Chato feels pride. “Despite all the sad times I have been through, I am alive. I work, drive, travel, and do housekeeping, I get to watch my nephews grow up,” she says. “25 years ago there was not as much hope for people with PAH. My advice to anyone is: Be happy, enjoy every minute of your life and don’t give up.”
4. What caused Chato to develop PAH?
A. The failed operation. B. Her lack of exercise.
C. Her heart condition. D. The lung infection.
5. Why did Chato give up her dream?
A. She was unwilling to see others. B. Her interest in dancing was reduced.
C. She had to receive treatment. D. Her physical state worsened.
6. How did Chato manage her work?
A. By getting extra breaks. B. By changing work pace.
C. By asking others for help. D. By showing more patience.
7. Which words can best describe Chato?
A. Courageous and tough. B. Energetic and talkative.
C. Considerate and gifted. D. Humorous and modest.

The desert of Abu Dhabi is an extremely dry place with very little water. The plants and animals in the desert must adapt to (适应) this tough condition. It has been found that many plants have special ways to store water or withstand high temperatures.
Recently, researchers in Abu Dhabi’s desert found a plant called the Athel tamarisk. This tree can thrive there and actually grow up to 18 meters tall. The tree seems to use salt crystals (结晶体) on its leaves to pull water from the air.
After a researcher noticed water appearing on these crystals, her team recorded videos of the plants. Later, they found out why the tree can survive in such a dry and salty desert. The tree gets rid of extra salt by producing salt crystals onto its leaves. However, this also helps the plant pull moisture (水分) from the air. This is a useful skill in extremely dry environments. The findings were reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The team examined salt crystals on the plant’s leaves. They found more than 10 different kinds of salt. Most of the larger salt crystals simply fall from the leaves. But they also found small crystals of lithium sulfate (硫酸锂). These small crystals stay on the leaves and take in water from the air. When the team added colored water to salty leaves, the water stuck to the crystals, and then went into the plant’s leaves. This proves that the crystals help the plant collect water.
Hopefully, the discovery could help people in dry places to collect moisture from the air, or even promote rain, the team says.
8. What does the underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Die out. B. Stand straight. C. Break down. D. Grow well.
9. How does the Athel tamarisk pull water from the air?
A. By removing air inside the plant.
B. By producing salt crystals on its leaves.
C. By growing up to 18 meters tall.
D. By changing the shapes of its leaves.
10. Why did the researchers add colored water to salty leaves?
A. To compare different kinds of salt.
B. To examine the structure of tree leaves.
C. To prove salt crystals help collect water.
D. To find out how much water the tree takes in.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Water Found in Abu Dhabi’s Desert
B. New Discoveries about the Secrets of Desert
C. A Plant in the Desert Pulls Water from the Air
D. Trees Grow Well in Terrible Weather Conditions

At the Tate Modern gallery in London, an exhibition recently opened displaying more than 150 surrealist artworks from all around the world. Surrealism is an exciting but unusual type of art. It makes people see things in a different way and can be inspired by an artist’s dreams or by putting strange objects together in unexpected groups.
Surrealism started in the 1920s in Paris, the capital of France. A French poet called André Breton wrote about it. He was very interested in the thoughts, dreams and unusual ideas artists had, rather than just life-like recreations of everyday things. One of the most famous examples from this era (时代) is German artist Max Ernst’s Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale.
Some surrealist pieces are entertaining and perhaps even make people laugh. Many surrealist artists, though, wanted their creations to have a serious message and challenge what governments did or the way a society acted. Works have been inspired by terrible things such as wars and people being forced to leave the area or country they came from. A great example is Mayo’s Coups de Bâtons, inspired by police storming a café that was popular with artists.
Surrealism usually focuses on paintings but it also involves film, literature (books and writings), music, photography, sculpture and theatre. Surrealism’s influence is still with us today in things such as funny TV adverts, computer games and unusual film scenes. If something breaks from reality in a strange and challenging way, it could be considered a type of surrealism. Salvador Dalí, a Spanish artist who lived from 1904 to 1989, is the most famous creator of surrealist art. You’ve probably seen at least one of his pieces of art because he designed the logo (标识) for Chupa Chups lollies.
12. What do we know about surrealism?
A. It started with André Breton’s well-known painting.
B. It has been popular for over 150 years.
C. It describes daily things in a real way.
D. It has its origins in France.
13. What gave Mayo the idea to create his Coups de Bâtons?
A. One of his interesting dreams.
B. An attack on a café by the police.
C. A war starting in his motherland.
D. The life after he moved to a new country.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The introduction to famous surrealist artists.
B. The purpose of creating surrealist art.
C. The characteristics of surrealism.
D. The many forms of surrealism.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Step inside the fantastic world of surrealism
B. Surrealism: a window into art history
C. Surrealism: art without borders
D. Meet the great surrealist artists

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
任务型阅读
第一节
My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” She added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing.” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think — wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.” That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details.

Boys and girls,
Good morning! I am Li Hua. I am honored to deliver a speech here which is aimed at sharing my views on music and inspiring more people to enjoy music and enjoy life.
Music, as a universal language, plays an important role in my life and has a great impact on me. For me, music is the medicine of the mind, which can keep me relaxed and take me to my dream land. When it comes to my favorite type of music, it must be the classical music, for it is so pure and amazing, reminding me of all beautiful things. So absorbed in music am I that I have taken part in several music performances and won many awards.
This is my story with music. I sincerely hope everyone can benefit from music in the way that it has done to me. That’s all. Thank you!
