Deep under the Pacific Ocean, coral reefs were colored by some algae that live with corals. Corals usually give nitrogen (氮) to algae, and in return, they get carbon (碳), which gives them energy.
In the early 1980s, a big heat wave (热浪) turned over 90% of these corals white and lifeless. Scientists thought that about 50% of coral reefs could disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed the same Pacific waters again in the late 1990s and in 2015—2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn’t influence the reefs as badly as the first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt.
Swimming to cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, because it makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others can use tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away too much harmful oxygen (O2) from algae. Some baby corals change their metabolisms (新陈代谢) in order to fight the warming waters. But all these adaptations can’t protect the corals completely.
After studying and understanding how corals adapt, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If they help corals accept heat-resistant (耐热的) algae or turn on their heat-fighting system, corals will be more likely to survive future ocean heat waves.
“When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with these colorful corals, I feel happy to be in this underwater world,” a famous biologist says. “ ▲ However, that drives you to want to use your skills and your love to help fight.”
26. What can we know from paragraph 1?
A. Corals make algae more colorful. B. Algae provide room for corals to live in.
C. Corals and algae support each other. D. Algae produce nitrogen to influence corals.
27. What does the underlined word “adapt” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Disappear completely. B. Change to survive.
C. Replace themselves. D. Bring some harm.
28. What difficulty do corals face?
A. They cannot completely adapt to heat waves.
B. They cannot change their own metabolisms.
C. They have no ability to swim to cooler waters.
D. They aren’t able to drive away harmful oxygen.
29. Which of the following can be put “ ▲ ” in the last paragraph?
A. There is nothing to do to save it. B. It will be exciting to see it survive.
C. It will be really sad to see it dead. D. I think it will survive in any condition.
30. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Corals Die Out B. Corals Fight Back
C. Corals Move Away D. Corals Give Up
C 27. B 28. A 29. C 30. B
根据第一段“Corals usually give nitrogen (氮) to algae, and in return, they get carbon (碳), which gives them energy.”
根据第二段“In the early 1980s, a big heat wave (热浪) turned over 90% of these corals white and lifeless… but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn’t influence the reefs as badly as the first.”
根据第三段结尾“But all these adaptations can’t protect the corals completely.”
最后一段后一句“However, that drives you to want to use your skills and your love to help fight.”
C
When summer comes and the weather becomes hot, people often choose to turn on the air conditioner (空调) at once. But is this the best way to cool down? A study suggests that the “fan-first” method is more practical (有效的) and healthy. We should use the electric fan (电风扇) as the main cooling way and only turn on the air conditioner when the indoor temperature rises above 27℃.
Why is the “fan-first” method better? Let’s start with the problems of air conditioners. Air conditioners are becoming more popular around the world. However, they are expensive to buy and use, and they let out heat into the outdoor environment, making cities even hotter. Also, if you use air conditioners too much, you might lose the ability to deal with heat, which is unhealthy.
Using electric fans, however, is a better choice for daily cooling and brings more benefits. They work by moving air around your body, making you feel up to 4°C cooler. This not only makes you feel more comfortable but also saves energy, creating a greener environment.
Of course, we need to use electric fans safely. Studies show that electric fans can be safely used in indoor temperatures up to 39°C for young healthy adults and 38°C for older adults in general. Above these temperatures, fans might make people feel worse. In such situations, ways such as wetting the skin, moving to a cooler place, or turning on the air conditioner are necessary.
The “fan-first” method
Take the electric fan as the main cooling tool.
Turn on the air conditioner only when the indoor temperature is above 27°C.

Problems of air conditioners
◆ They are expensive.
◆ They release (释放) heat and make cities much ____31____.

◆ They use ____34____ and help to create a greener environment.
Safe use temperature of electric fans
◆ For young healthy adults: up to 39℃
◆ For older adults: up to 38℃
◆____35____ these temperatures, electric fans might make people feel worse, so other cooling methods are necessary.
