Deep under the Pacific Ocean, coral reefs were colored by some algae that live with corals. Corals usually give nitrogen (氮) to algae, and in return, they get carbon (碳), which gives them energy.
In the early 1980s, a big heat wave (热浪) turned over 90% of these corals white and lifeless. Scientists thought that about 50% of coral reefs could disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed the same Pacific waters again in the late 1990s and in 2015—2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn’t influence the reefs as badly as the first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt.
Swimming to cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, because it makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others can use tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away too much harmful oxygen (O2) from algae. Some baby corals change their metabolisms (新陈代谢) in order to fight the warming waters. But all these adaptations can’t protect the corals completely.
After studying and understanding how corals adapt, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If they help corals accept heat-resistant (耐热的) algae or turn on their heat-fighting system, corals will be more likely to survive future ocean heat waves.
“When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with these colorful corals, I feel happy to be in this underwater world,” a famous biologist says. “ ▲ However, that drives you to want to use your skills and your love to help fight.”
26. What can we know from paragraph 1?
A. Corals make algae more colorful. B. Algae provide room for corals to live in.
C. Corals and algae support each other. D. Algae produce nitrogen to influence corals.
27. What does the underlined word “adapt” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Disappear completely. B. Change to survive.
C. Replace themselves. D. Bring some harm.
28. What difficulty do corals face?
A. They cannot completely adapt to heat waves.
B. They cannot change their own metabolisms.
C. They have no ability to swim to cooler waters.
D. They aren’t able to drive away harmful oxygen.
29. Which of the following can be put “ ▲ ” in the last paragraph?
A. There is nothing to do to save it. B. It will be exciting to see it survive.
C. It will be really sad to see it dead. D. I think it will survive in any condition.
30. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Corals Die Out B. Corals Fight Back
C. Corals Move Away D. Corals Give Up

When summer comes and the weather becomes hot, people often choose to turn on the air conditioner (空调) at once. But is this the best way to cool down? A study suggests that the “fan-first” method is more practical (有效的) and healthy. We should use the electric fan (电风扇) as the main cooling way and only turn on the air conditioner when the indoor temperature rises above 27℃.
Why is the “fan-first” method better? Let’s start with the problems of air conditioners. Air conditioners are becoming more popular around the world. However, they are expensive to buy and use, and they let out heat into the outdoor environment, making cities even hotter. Also, if you use air conditioners too much, you might lose the ability to deal with heat, which is unhealthy.
Using electric fans, however, is a better choice for daily cooling and brings more benefits. They work by moving air around your body, making you feel up to 4°C cooler. This not only makes you feel more comfortable but also saves energy, creating a greener environment.
Of course, we need to use electric fans safely. Studies show that electric fans can be safely used in indoor temperatures up to 39°C for young healthy adults and 38°C for older adults in general. Above these temperatures, fans might make people feel worse. In such situations, ways such as wetting the skin, moving to a cooler place, or turning on the air conditioner are necessary.
The “fan-first” method
Take the electric fan as the main cooling tool.
Turn on the air conditioner only when the indoor temperature is above 27°C.
Problems of air conditioners
◆ They are expensive.
◆ They release (释放) heat and make cities much ____31____.
◆ Overusing them may weaken people’s ability to deal with heat.
____32____ of using electric fans
◆ Fans ____33____ air around your body, making you feel cooler.
◆ They use ____34____ and help to create a greener environment.
Safe use temperature of electric fans
◆ For young healthy adults: up to 39℃
◆ For older adults: up to 38℃
◆____35____ these temperatures, electric fans might make people feel worse, so other cooling methods are necessary.

A new trend (潮流/风尚) is becoming popular among young people in China. It helps them reduce stress by finding beauty in everyday environments. This activity, called ColorWalk (色彩漫步) , includes choosing a color and then looking for objects of the same color. The trend has quickly got attention on social media platforms such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu.
Yang Zheng, a 29-year-old from Qingdao, first discovered ColorWalk on Douyin and found it was a fun way to connect with her environment. She said, “Whether in city streets or nature, it’s exciting to share the beauty I find.” She created a WeChat group with about 45 young members. In the group, they choose a “Color of the Day” and share photos of matching things.
ColorWalk is a way to step out of the repeated daily life and get relaxed. Once Yang felt sick and uncomfortable on her bus ride home. After she looked for things matching the day’s color theme, she soon felt much better and the trip became more interesting. She also noticed small scenery (风景) details she had missed before.
Experts say ColorWalk helps cut stress. When people focus on looking for a certain color, they will forget troubles. Different colors affect people’s feelings differently. Cool colors like blue and green calm us down, while warm colors such as red and orange give us energy.
In conclusion, ColorWalk offers young people an easy way to reduce stress and enjoy life. It lets them do small things to get happiness and a sense of control, and find joy in little daily moments.
