The news cycle is driving us to the edge of madness, so why not switch off, unplug and pick up a book? We know you could use a laugh right now — and luckily, several thousands of you told us all about the books, stories and poems that make you laugh.
We took your votes and with the help of our panel (专家小组) of expert judges we created this list of 100 reads designed to make you laugh out loud. Want slice-of-life essays? Loopy poetry? Texts from famous literary figures? Scroll down — we’ve got it all.
As with all our reader polls, this is a curated (精心筹划的) list and not a straight-up popularity contest; unlike last year, you’ll see the books are grouped into categories rather than ranked from one to 100.
And, as always, there are a few things that didn’t make the list — surprisingly, Shakespeare didn’t get enough votes to make it to the semifinals. Then there were books that didn’t quite stand the test of time, or were so new we couldn’t tell whether they’d stand up.
Some of the authors on this list are incredibly popular, and you voted them in over and over again. Because space is limited, we try to hold each author to one spot on the list, but there are some exceptions such as Nora Ephron, who our judges thought was perfect.
And speaking of our judges, you will find a couple of their works on the list this year — we don’t let judges vote for their own works, but readers loved works such as Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting In Real Life, so the panel agreed they should stay.
Laughter is the best medicine. Just click here and start reading!
1. How is the list of this year different from that of last year?
A. More books are included. B. It is made all by readers.
C. It mainly focuses on poetry. D. The listed books are classified.
2. What can we learn about Nora Ephron?
A. She fails to stand the test of time.
B. She is not so popular as other authors.
C. She gets more than one spot on the list.
D. She belongs to the panel of expert judges.
3. Why is We Are Never Meeting In Real Life kept on the list?
A. It is written by a judge. B. It reflects real life.
C. It gets enough readers’ votes. D. It attracts the experts.
B
It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight? For me, it was.
I started playing the piano when I was four-that was 15 years ago! This was huge commitment, so there must have been something worth holding on to, right?
The easy guess is that I was purely in love with music and piano. Although that’s the sweeter tale, it’s a bit more complicated. I struggled a lot with piano. Family and peers were, at least in my own head, constantly placed beside me in competition. I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt. Hate sprouted (滋生) when my self-criticism hit too hard.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. For a while, piano was more of an annoyance than a hobby. But somehow, love grew. It was deeply buried. But it was there, and by high school,it was strong enough that when I was truly on the verge of quitting any kind of formal training. I found the strength to hold on tighter, and dig further. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who helped me tunnel into what I loved. I learned pieces for myself, I composed for myself, and I found confidence not because I got “good enough,” but because I learned that anything I had was good enough.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
4. What does the author want to show by telling a classic story?
A. The benefits of music.
B. Kids’ struggle in learning instruments.
C. Kids’ bittersweet childhood.
D. The popularity of learning instruments.
5. What can we know about the author’s experience of playing the piano?
A. She finally quit formal training.
B. She never treated it as her hobby.
C. She was in pure love with music and piano.
D. She once experienced great pressure from herself.
6. What helped the author find confidence?
A. Her attitude. B. Her training.
C. Her compromise. D. Her achievement.
7. What message is mainly delivered in the passage?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Love is a thing that grows.
C. Content is better than riches.
D. Chance favors the prepared mind.
C
In countries around the world, women do more unpaid labor-housework, child and elder care, and the mental load of managing a family than men. New research suggests it takes a health toll(代价)on many of them.
An analysis of 19 studies covering 70,310 people globally, which is published this month in The Lancet(柳叶刀)Public Health, found that the more of this labor women do, the worse their mental health. The findings point out women are more often diagnosed with anxiety and depression than men.
Housework and child care, the research found, have much less of an impact on men’s mental health. That’s probably because they do so much less of it. In the United States, women do an average 4.5 hours of such work a day, compared with 2.8 hours for men, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In Greece, women do 4.3 hours while men do an hour and a half. Even in the most gender-equal countries, like Sweden, women do 50 minutes more a day than men.
It’s also because the type of such work men do is generally less time-sensitive. For example, men are more often responsible for outdoor tasks, like mowing the lawn, that are done less often and on their own schedule. Women are more likely to take on daily tasks that need to be done at certain times, like preparing meals or cleaning up.
Social expectations probably also play a role. Studies have shown that women feel pressure to keep their homes clean, for instance, and feel judged if they don’t. Men, on the other hand, are often praised for doing daily tasks like taking a child to an appointment.
The Lancet researchers said that drawing clear conclusions from the 19 studies was difficult and that more research would be welcome.
8. How does the author show the research findings in paragraph 2 and 3?
A. By giving examples.
B. By listing figures.
C. By making analysis.
D. By telling stories.
9. What does the underlined word “time-sensitive“ mean in paragraph 4?
A. Flexible.
B. Valuable.
C. Demanding in timing.
D. Challenging in skills.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. Women are generally expected to do more household labor.
B. Women will be punished by judges if they don’t keep their homes clean.
C. Men feel stressed more often when they can’t take their children to the dentist.
D. Men are supposed to take a child to an appointment instead of doing other housework.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Facts that men and women are unequal.
B. Bad effects that housework has on women.
C. Responsibilities that women share in families.
D. Reasons why unpaid labor hurts women more mentally.

Two powerful NASA telescopes have detected (发现) the oldest and most distant black hole ever found. Data collected via energetic X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers spot the signature of a growing black hole within the early universe just 470 million years after the big bang, which occurred 13.8 billion years ago. The discovery, described in a study published in Nature Astronomy, may help astronomers figure out how some of the first supermassive black holes formed in the universe.
“We needed Webb to find this remarkably distant galaxy (星系) and Chandra to find its supermassive black hole,” said lead study author Akos Bogdan. “We also took advantage of a cosmic magnifying glass (宇宙放大镜) that boosted the amount of light we detected.” He was referring to an effect called gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应), which occurs when closer objects act like a magnifying glass for distant objects. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light of distant galaxies in the background of whatever is doing the magnifying, enabling observations of otherwise invisible features.
Astronomers detected the black hole in a galaxy called UHZ1. At first glance, the galaxy appeared in the same direction as a cluster (星团) of galaxies known as Abell 2744, located about 3.5 billion light-years from Earth. But data collected by the Webb telescope showed that UHZ1 is actually much farther away and located beyond the cluster at 13.2 billion light-years from Earth.
The team used the Chandra Observatory to detect superheated gas releasing X-rays within UHZ1, the obvious sign of a supermassive black hole growing in size. The detection was made possible by the Abell cluster of galaxies, which intensified the light of the UHZ1 galaxy and the X-rays released by the black hole.
Astronomers think the discovery will help them better understand how supermassive black holes appeared and reached their huge masses so soon after the beginning of the universe.
12. What’s the possible age of the newly-found black hole?
A. 470 million years. B. 13.33 billion years. C. 13.8 billion years. D. 14.27 billion years.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The applications of the research. B. The significance of the discovery.
C. The contributors to the discovery. D. The background of the research.
14. Which best shows the position of Abell 2744, Earth and UHZ1? (A: Abell 2744; E: Earth; U: UHZ1)
A. B. C. D.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Oldest and Most Distant Black Hole Spotted
B. Two Powerful NASA Telescopes Coming into Service
C. New Supporting Evidence of the Big Bang Theory Detected
D. Astronomers Figuring Out How the First Black Holes Formed

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.

A
The news cycle is driving us to the edge of madness, so why not switch off, unplug and pick up a book?

根据第三段中“As with all our reader polls, this is a curated (精心筹划的) list and not a straight-up popularity contest; unlike last year, you’ll see the books are grouped into categories rather than ranked from one to 100. (与我们所有的读者投票一样,这是一个精心策划的榜单,而不是直接的人气竞赛;与去年不同的是,你会看到这些书被分成不同的类别,而不是从1到100的排名。)”可知,今年的榜单和去年不同的是所列出的书是分类的。故选D项。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Because space is limited, we try to hold each author to one spot on the list, but there are some exceptions such as Nora Ephron, who our judges thought was perfect. (由于篇幅有限,我们尽量让每位作者都在名单上占据一个位置,但也有一些例外,比如Nora Ephron,我们的评委认为她是完美的。)”可知,Nora Ephron在名单上得到了不止一个位置。故选C项。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“And speaking of our judges, you will find a couple of their works on the list this year — we don’t let judges vote for their own works, but readers loved works such as Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting In Real Life, so the panel agreed they should stay. (说到我们的评委,你会在今年的名单上发现他们的一些作品——我们不让评委为他们自己的作品投票,但是读者喜欢Samantha Irby的《我们在现实生活中从未见面》这样的作品,所以评审团同意他们留下来。)”可知,因为《我们在现实生活中从未见面》得到了足够多的读者投票所以一直在榜单上。故选C项。

B 5. D 6. A 7. B
由文章第一段“It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight? For me, it was.(这是一个经典的故事:一个孩子从小就被迫学习一种乐器,他们在整个童年时期都在演奏,并与之发展出苦乐参半的关系。对音乐的热爱和对不断挑战的憎恨之间不断的斗争值得吗?对我来说,是的)”可推知,文章讲故事是为了说明孩子们在学乐器方面的挣扎,然后引出介绍自己的情况。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“ I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt.(为了向别人证明一些东西,我感受到了成为最好的人的压力——更具毁灭性的是,为了向自己证明一些东西。我对音乐的兴趣在竞争和怀疑的阳光下生长。)”可知,作者曾经经历了来自自己的巨大压力。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。原文明确提到,作者找到自信的原因是 “I learned that anything I had was good enough”(我明白自己所拥有的一切已经足够好)。 故选A项。
由文章倒数第二段“It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. (很难学会去爱一些不是源于爱的东西)”以及文章最后一段“The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.(我对钢琴的爱和恨都是种下的,也是成长的。如果你也学会了憎恨某件事,请记住,有了承诺,它可以被连根拔起,爱可以在它的地方建立一个家。时间总是有的。空间也总是有的)”以及上下文可知,文章通过自己练钢琴的经历领悟到:对东西的爱是可以逐渐培养形成的。由此推知,B项Love is a thing that grows(爱是一种成长的东西)符合文意。故选B项。
B 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第二段“An analysis of 19 studies covering 70,310 people globally(本月发表在《柳叶刀》上的一项对全球70310人的19项研究的分析发现)”以及第三段“In the United States, women do an average 4.5 hours of such work a day, compared with 2.8 hours for men(在美国,女性平均每天做4.5小时的此类工作,而男性为2.8小时)”可知,作者在第二段和第三段是通过列举数字展示研究成果,故选B项。
根据下文“For example, men are more often responsible for outdoor tasks, like mowing the lawn, that are done less often and on their own schedule. Women are more likely to take on daily tasks that need to be done at certain times, like preparing meals or cleaning up.(例如,男性更经常负责户外任务,比如修剪草坪,而这些任务的频率较低,而且是按照自己的时间表完成的。女性更有可能承担某些特定时间需要完成的日常任务,比如做饭或打扫卫生)”可知,男性负责的任务对时间的要求没有女性高,可推理出第四段中time-sensitive的含义应为:对时间要求高的,故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段第二句“Studies have shown that women feel pressure to keep their homes clean, for instance, and feel judged if they don’t(例如,研究表明女性会因需要保持家里清洁更感到有压力,如果不这样做,她们会受到评判)”可知,妇女被期望从事更多的家务劳动,故选A项。
根据文章第一段“In countries around the world, women do more unpaid labor-housework, child and elder care, and the mental load of managing a family-than men. New research suggests it takes a health toll(代价)on many of them(在世界各国,女性比男性做更多的无偿劳动家务、照顾孩子和老人,以及管理家庭的精神负担。新的研究表明,这会对他们中的许多人造成健康损失)”、再根据第三段“Housework and child care, the research found, have much less of an impact on men’s mental health.( 研究发现,家务劳动和儿童保育对男性心理健康的影响要小得多)”以及第五段“Social expectations probably also play a role.(社会期望可能也起到了一定作用)”可知,本文第一段提出了无偿劳动家务对妇女有心理健康危害这一研究发现,后续段落对这一研究发现进行了原因分析和解释,故选D项。
D
B 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第一段中“Data collected via energetic X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers spot the signature of a growing black hole within the early universe just 470 million years after the big bang, which occurred 13.8 billion years ago. (钱德拉X射线天文台和詹姆斯·韦布空间望远镜通过高能X射线收集的数据帮助天文学家发现了138亿年前宇宙大爆炸4.7亿年后早期宇宙中一个不断增长的黑洞的特征。)”可知,新发现的黑洞的年龄为133.3亿年左右(=138亿年-4.7亿年)。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“We needed Webb to find this remarkably distant galaxy (星系) and Chandra to find its supermassive black hole (我们需要韦布望远镜来发现这个距离极为遥远的星系,而钱德拉X射线天文台则用来探测其超大质量黑洞)”和““We also took advantage of a cosmic magnifying glass (宇宙放大镜) that boosted the amount of light we detected.” He was referring to an effect called gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应), which occurs when closer objects act like a magnifying glass for distant objects. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light of distant galaxies in the background of whatever is doing the magnifying, enabling observations of otherwise invisible features.
根据第三段“Astronomers detected the black hole in a galaxy called UHZ1.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Two powerful NASA telescopes have detected (发现) the oldest and most distant black hole ever found. (两台强大的NASA望远镜探测到了迄今为止发现的最古老、最遥远的黑洞。)”可知,文章核心内容是天文学家发现了一个最古老、最遥远的黑洞,并介绍了其发现过程与意义。因此,A选项“发现最古老、最遥远的黑洞”直接概括主题,最适合作为文章标题。

57. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
