M: The summer vacation in New Delhi begins on May 1st every year. Much before it began, we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place. So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening. The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest. We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation. A One of the main decisions you must make when traveling is deciding where to stay. A place to stay can often make or break a holiday. Whether you are looking for a classy hotel or a night under the stars, we can guide you through your different options. Bed and Breakfast An English invention, bed and breakfast, offers exactly what they suggest, a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning. “B & Bs” are usually someone’s private home, often found in the countryside. Hostels For those traveling on a tight budget, hostels are the best accommodation option. Informal places usually with a lovely relaxed atmosphere, they offer dormitory beds for rent. Bathrooms are usually down the hall. Remember to check reviews by previous guests online before you book your hostel. Couch Surfing An unusual but interesting option, couch (沙发) surfing is a growing trend among young internationals. The idea is that you become a member of the online couch-surfing community (www.couchsurfing.com) and then when you travel, look up other members in that country and ask to stay on their couch. Most hosts will suggest sightseeing trips and take you out in the evening, making it a great way to see things that aren’t in your guidebook. And remember, it may be free but don’t forget to offer to buy your host a drink or dinner. Camping Sleeping under the stars! For budget travelers staying at camping grounds is the cheapest way to travel. The drawback is having to carry a tent with you. Camping grounds can be found across Europe, America and Australia. However, if you intend on camping in busy cities, check first where the nearest place for camping is. More often than not, they are on the edge of cities, which can mean lengthy bus rides into town when you want to eat or see the sights. 21. Which of the following may be a B & B? A. B. C. D. 22. What is the advantage of couch surfing? A. You can have a couch to sleep on. B. You don’t have to pay any money. C. You can explore the nightlife there. D. The host will share the expense with you. 23. What may the four alternatives have in common? A. They help you save money. B. They help you make friends. C. They offer you good reviews. D. They offer you nice views. A 22. C 23. 根据Bed and Breakfast部分中““B & Bs” are usually someone’s private home, often found in the countryside. (“住宿+早餐”通常是指某人的私人住宅,多位于乡间。)”可知,A项的乡间独栋住宅很可能提供“住宿+早餐”服务。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据Couch Surfing部分中“Most hosts will suggest sightseeing trips and take you out in the evening, making it a great way to see things that aren’t in your guidebook. (大多数房东都会推荐观光行程,并在晚上带你外出,这是了解指南书中未提及景点的好方法。)”可知,沙发客的优势是你可以体验那里的夜生活。 【23题详解】 细节理解题。根据Hostels部分中“For those traveling on a tight budget, hostels are the best accommodation option. (对于预算有限的旅行者来说,青年旅舍是最佳住宿选择。)”、Couch Surfing部分中“And remember, it may be free but don’t forget to offer to buy your host a drink or dinner. (而且请记住,虽然可能免费,但别忘了主动为你的房东提供一杯饮料或一顿晚餐。)”和Camping部分中“For budget travelers staying at camping grounds is the cheapest way to travel. (对于预算有限的旅行者来说,露营是出行最经济的方式。)”,以及Bed and Breakfast部分中虽未直接提及价格,但作为私人家庭提供的住宿,通常比酒店经济可知,这四种住宿方式的共同点是它们都能帮你省钱。 B As we mediate conflicts (调解冲突) between students in schools, we are discovering that the conflicts affect many more people than just themselves. Their brothers and sisters might be concerned, as well as occasionally their parents, guardians (监护人), aunts, and uncles. This means that while we can do a lot of work with the students themselves, the issue we are trying to address is much deeper and needs to include more people in the conversations. Two mediators of the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) had a case that concerned four students and their five guardians. During the beginning parts of the mediation, some of the adults in the room started to become heated and protective of their children. A grandmother had a confrontation (对抗) with one of the moms. The two parties were separated by CCR mediators, who then gave them time to cool off. Then, CCR staff invited everyone in the room to take a moment to concentrate on the task at hand. As a group, they reviewed the guidelines and actually added some that addressed why the adults were feeling so defensive. Then, something unbelievable happened: The grandmother and the mom who were upset with each other earlier apologized to each other. They each said they had no issue with each other after hearing the other’s point of view. They hugged and agreed to communicate in a more positive way. After the students saw this, they asked to have some space. They left the room together and as the adults watched from the window, they hugged each other. Once they came back into the room, the students made a plan for how to communicate in the future using the example of their guardians. The power of role models is far beyond what we know. By modeling how to be angry effectively, we can change how our children respond when they are angry too. 24. What is needed to deal with conflicts in schools according to the author? A. More communication with students. B. A simpler mediation process. C. Broader conversations. D. More CCR mediators. 25. How did the grandmother and the mom feel at the beginning of the mediation? A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Regretful. D. Angry. 26. What did the students do after leaving the room? A. They made a secret plan. B. They said sorry to each other. C. They tried to find a way to calm down. D. They communicated with their guardians. 27. What would be the best title for the text? A. The Challenges of Family Relationships. B. The Correct Ways to Apologize. C. The Power of Role Models. D. The Nature of Conflicts. C 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“This means that while we can do a lot of work with the students themselves, the issue we are trying to address is much deeper and needs to include more people in the conversations. (这意味着,虽然我们可以与学生本人做很多工作,但我们试图解决的问题要深刻得多,需要让更多人参与对话。)”可知,处理学校冲突需要让更多人参与,进行更广泛的对话。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“During the beginning parts of the mediation, some of the adults in the room started to become heated and protective of their children. A grandmother had a confrontation (对抗) with one of the moms. (在调解的开始阶段,房间里的一些成年人开始变得激动并保护自己的孩子。一位祖母与其中一位母亲发生了冲突。)”可知,调解开始时,那位祖母和那位母亲情绪激动,发生了冲突,表明当时她们感到愤怒。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“After the students saw this, they asked to have some space. They left the room together and as the adults watched from the window, they hugged each other. (学生们看到这一幕后,要求有一些私人空间。他们一起离开了房间,当大人们从窗户望出去时,他们互相拥抱了。)”可知,离开房间后,学生们互相拥抱了,这是合好的表现,说明是互相道歉了。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“The power of role models is far beyond what we know. By modeling how to be angry effectively, we can change how our children respond when they are angry too. (榜样的力量远超我们的认知。通过示范如何有效地表达愤怒,我们也能改变孩子们在愤怒时的反应方式。)”可知,本文通过一个调解案例说明,解决学生冲突需要让更多相关成年人参与对话,而成年人通过道歉和解树立了榜样,促使学生也效仿并学会积极沟通,强调了榜样在化解冲突中的重要作用。因此,“榜样的力量”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。 C When we’re studying a new language, many of us approach it with dread. If we make a mistake or say something wrong, we judge ourselves strictly. But as it turns out, however, we’d benefit by shifting (转移) our focus and worrying less about getting it right, according to Marianna Pascal, a communication skills trainer. As a teacher who’s spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English, Pascal noticed that some students didn’t get a high language level but could still communicate very effectively. She remembers one specific student named Faisal. Despite not knowing much English, she says, “This guy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly, clearly, and then he could respond and express his thoughts beautifully.” She also observed some students knew quite a bit of English but struggled to make themselves understood. Pascal noticed that a lot of these students’ attitude towards English is like her daughter’s attitude towards playing the piano. Pascal says her daughter hated piano and hated practicing, because she was afraid of being wrong. To her, her success in piano was measured by how few mistakes she made. Then she shared her experience in a cafe. The person sitting next to her was playing a game while his friends watched, and he just wasn’t a very good player. But at the same time, she saw something amazing. Even though this guy was terrible and his friends were watching him, there was no embarrassment or shyness. There was no feeling of being judged. Instead, he focused completely on the task at hand. Pascal says, “I suddenly realized that this is it. This is the same attitude that people hike Faisal have when they speak English.” Pascal believes that speaking a language isn’t like those exams many of us had to take in grade school, where a tiny mistake would result in a big red X from the teacher, In the real world, what matters is whether we can make ourselves understood. She says, “If you want to speak English well, don’t focus on yourself but focus on the other person and the goal you want to achieve.” 28. What does the underlined word “dread” mean in paragraph 1? A. Fear. B. Doubt. C. Curiosity. D. Confidence. 29. Why does Pascal mention her daughter? A. To provide some advice. B. To offer some details. C. To state a reason. D. To present a fact. 30. What did Pascal see from the man playing a game? A. Never minding others’ opinions. B. Not judging a person too soon. C. Improving through practicing. D. Playing a game with patience. 31. What might Pascal agree with ? A. It is important for teachers to encourage students in exams. B. It is OK to make small mistakes in speaking a language. C. Language has to be fluently spoken in daily life. D. Language is an art difficult to fully master. A 29. C 30. A 31. 故选A。 根据文章第三段“She also observed some students knew quite a bit of English but struggled to make themselves understood. Pascal noticed that a lot of these students’ attitude towards English is like her daughter’s attitude towards playing the piano. Pascal says her daughter hated piano and hated practicing, because she was afraid of being wrong. To her, her success in piano was measured by how few mistakes she made.(她还观察到一些学生虽然懂一点英语,但却很难让别人听懂。Pascal注意到很多学生对英语的态度就像她女儿对弹钢琴的态度一样。帕斯卡说,她的女儿讨厌钢琴,也讨厌练习,因为她害怕出错。对她来说,她在钢琴上的成功是由她犯的错误少来衡量的)”可推知,Pascal提到女儿学钢琴是为了说明造成学生们这种情况的原因,虽然他们懂一点英语,但是害怕出错。故选C。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The person sitting next to her was playing a game while his friends watched, and he just wasn’t a very good player. But at the same time, she saw something amazing. Even though this guy was terrible and his friends were watching him, there was no embarrassment or shyness. There was no feeling of being judged. Instead, he focused completely on the task at hand.(坐在她旁边的人正在玩游戏,而他的朋友在一旁看着,他并不是一个很好的玩家。但与此同时,她看到了一些惊人的东西。尽管这个人很糟糕,他的朋友们都在看着他,但他没有感到尴尬或害羞。没有被评判的感觉。相反,他完全专注于手头的任务)”可知,作者从这个玩游戏的人身上看到了他不在意别人的想法和看法。故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Pascal believes that speaking a language isn’t like those exams many of us had to take in grade school, where a tiny mistake would result in a big red X from the teacher, In the real world, what matters is whether we can make ourselves understood.(Pascal认为,说一门语言不像我们许多人在小学必须参加的那些考试,在那里一个小错误就会导致老师给一个大大的红色X。在现实世界中,重要的是我们是否能让自己被理解)”可推知,Pascal认为,在学习语言时,犯一些小错误是没有关系的。故选B。 D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed. Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. “It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.” 32. Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities? A. Seeing movies. B. Watching videos. C. Texting friends. D. Surfing the internet. 33. Who might lose the most sleep according to the text? A. Lucy who watched a three-hour movie before going to bed. B. Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed. C. Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day. D. Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning. 34. What does the underlined word “tricky” mean in paragraph 4? A. Frightening. B. Awkward. C. Hopeless. D. Encouraging. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Screen time activities cut down our sleep hours B. Interactive screen use reduces sleep time in teenagers C. Passive screen use is better than interactive screen use D. Parents should prevent children from using social media 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. 根据第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.(虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说)”可知,给朋友发短信属于交互式屏幕活动。 根据第三段“Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later.(那些在睡前一小时聊天、发短信或玩游戏的人失眠最严重:大约30分钟后才入睡)”可知,杰克在睡觉前和他哥哥视频聊了30分钟可能会失去最多的睡眠。 根据划线词后文“These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.” 根据第一段“While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.(虽然看屏幕的时间会影响睡眠,但新的研究表明,互动活动,如给朋友发短信或玩电子游戏,比看电视等被动屏幕时间更能推迟和减少睡眠时间,尤其是对青少年来说)”结合文章主要说明了与被动屏幕时间相比,互动性活动,如与朋友发短信或玩视频游戏,对睡眠的影响更大,尤其是对青少年而言。 The Bai people mainly live in and around Yunnan’s famous Dali region. ___36___ The San Dao Cha or Three Courses of Tea ceremony is perhaps the finest example of their hospitality (好客). B As we mediate conflicts (调解冲突) between students in schools, we are discovering that the conflicts affect many more people than just themselves. C When we’re studying a new language, many of us approach it with dread. D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.
