When you finish some chores at home, will your parents give you a reward (奖励) ? It is common for parents to do that. But some people do not think it is a good idea.
One of them is Susie Walton, an education expert. She believes if kids get rewards, they will think that housework is not worth (值得) doing unless they get something in return. Kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will if their parents reward them for it. Walton also said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all should play our part in keeping our home clean.”
Other people don’t think so. They believe that rewards encourage kids to do more chores. Rewarding also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn that we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also mobile phone apps like ChoreMonster. With the app, kids get points after doing chores. After getting some points, they can do something they like. For example, parents will allow them to play video games for half an hour if they get 80 points.
So each side seems to have their own reasons. Whether you give children rewards depends on your own ideas. Maybe you have better ways to solve this problem.

C. We don’t know what’s the best way to get kids helping.
B

Once upon a time, there lived two brothers in Germany. As boys, they were interested in history and magic. When they grew older, they also liked to listen to old stories and then write them down. Later on, they had enough stories to make a book.
They are the Brothers Grimm. In 1812, their first book of Children’ s and Household Tales came out. This little book started with a good teacher. This teacher liked to find out how things happened. Soon the two brothers were doing the same thing. They asked questions and then looked for answers to them.
“Who made up the old fairy tales?
Who first told about Cinderella?
Who made up the story of Snow White and the story of Sleeping Beauty?”
They found that no one knew the answers to such questions. People told the stories to one another, but only a few old people still remembered them. “When these old people die, the stories will die with them,” said the brothers, “We must write down all the stories we can find.”
The brothers looked for stories for five years. At last they got 89 tales. And before Christmas, the first book came out. People loved the book! They asked for more fairy stories. So the brothers put tales into another two books. In all, they had 210 stories to put into their books.
However, the original edition (版本) is a little dark. For example, Cinderella’s stepsisters cut off part of their feet to fit them into the lost shoe. In The Frog Prince, the frog finally turns into the prince. It is not because of the princess’ (公主的) kiss, but because she throws the frog against the wall.
These things have made some people believe that they are not suitable for children. Therefore, the stories were changed a lot in later editions.
11. What were the Brothers Grimm interested in when they were boys?
A. Telling old stories. B. Making up fairy tales. C. history and magic.
12. What did the brothers learn to do from their teacher?
A. Look for a lot of stories.
B. Find out how things happened.
C. Write down the stories they found.
13. How many tales did the Brothers Grimm put in their first book Children’s and Household Tales?
A. 299 B. 210 C. 89
14. What is the correct order of what the Brothers Grimm did?
a.They looked for stories for 5 years.
b.They asked questions about fairy tales.
c.They liked to listen to old stories.
d.Their first book came out.
A. b-a-d-c B. c-b-a-d C. a-b-c-d
15. Why were the stories in Grimm’s Fairy Tales changed in later editions?
A. Because the first edition didn’t sell well.
B. Because they were a little dark for children.
C. Because children were not interested in them.

How do you spend your weekends? For many young people, they go to the cinema with friends, have dinner out, or go shopping. This was once the routine for Zhang Yiling, a 27-year-old girl from Shanghai. But three years ago, fresh out of university and starting her first job, Zhang realized that her idea of “relaxing weekends” nearly turned into “spending money”. If she didn’t spend money on weekends, she wouldn’t know what relaxing activities to do. Because of this, Zhang began to look for other ways to enjoy weekend life, not just shopping.
To make a change, Zhang and 26 friends built up The Lifespark Group in 2022. They started a project called “Make Your Weekend a True Break”. By doing surveys, they found many surprising ways to enjoy weekends, such as dancing and exercising in a park square, joining book clubs, watching movies at home, or even becoming a model for free photos.
Zhang herself also began to pay closer attention (注意) to the interesting things around her. She found that a flower shop near her home gave free lessons on weekends. She learned about how to pick fresh flowers and grow plants. “I take care of my plants and flowers every day. I enjoy looking at them growing strong. That makes me feel relaxed.”
“I hope that our project can make more people know what they really want and how to use money in the right way,” said Zhang Yiling. “Let’s go to the library to read about different lives we never experience and visit museums to learn about history or culture.
