Alaa el-Habashu was shopping for food when he came across a dilapidated (破旧的) 17th-century house being used as a butcher’s shop in the historic Cairo neighbourhood of al-Darb al-Ahmar.
“I was surprised by the beauty”, the U. S.-trained architect said of the house. Built of brick and stone, it has a large courtyard and a number of rooms with beautifully painted wooden ceilings. And he struck up a friendship with the butcher, who owned the building, and received a call from him several years later saying a developer wanted to buy it and pull it down.
Determined to save the building, el-Habashi bought it in 2009.Then he spent ten years restoring the house which he named Bayt Yakan and tried to turn it into a community space.
Today, its beautifully restored courtyard, with lovely flowers growing under the wooden latticed (装有格栅的) windows, hosts many locally led community activities promoting heritage preservation.
Such courtyards played “a key social and economic role” as community centers, el-Habashi said, a role he worked hard to revive.
E-Habashi said there were once around 600 historic houses with similar courtyards — all built facing northwest to catch the cool wind — but just 24 are protected as heritage sites. “As for the rest of them, those that are still standing, who knows what state they are in?” he said. “Every day, another one gets pulled down. The loss of such heritage would be irreparable.”
Public space is becoming less common in crowded Old Cairo, often covered in dangerous air pollution from traffic-packed streets, and affected by increasingly hot summers due to global warming.
“There are very few places where people can come together, away from small apartments and crowded streets,” said el-Habashi. “I hope the old houses can help solve modern problems. They can bring some peace to the neighbourhood. I would love for these houses to become your local parks, where women can bring their kids and sit in the garden.”
4.What did el-Habashi find in al-Darb al-Ahmar area?
A.An empty food store. B.An old friend.
C.A beautiful historic house. D.A U. S.-trained architect.

C.He turned it into a butcher’s shop. D.He spent a lot of time repairing it.
6.What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show?
A.Many people in this area do not have a house to live in.
B.Some community centres are not doing their role properly.
C.Preservation of local historic houses is far from satisfactory.
D.There are many heritage preservation activities led by local people.
7.What does el-Habashi expect of Bayt Yakan?
A.It can be moved out of crowded Old Cairo.
B.It can take the place of apartments for people to live in.
C.It can be a place for people to come together and find peace.
D.It can draw attention to traffic pollution and rising temperatures.

After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-metre room provides a treadmill (跑步机), an air cleaner, a mirror, a television and an air conditioner, and users can let down the curtains (窗帘) for privacy. When exercising, users can listen to music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code (二维码) for use. A refundable deposit (可退还的押金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally new. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Centre published a report which says that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.
8.What makes the shared gym room different from the common one?
A.Sharing open spaces. B.Providing free training courses.
C.Holding one person at a time. D.Having some advanced equipment.
9.What do people need to do to use the shared gym room?
A.Pay 100 yuan first. B.Book a room ahead of time.
C.Have a shower before exercise. D.Let down curtains for privacy.
10.What is the author’s attitude towards China’s sharing economy?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Worried. D.Positive.
11.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce shared gym rooms. B.To praise a technology company.
C.To support the idea of sharing gym rooms. D.To tell the future of shared gym rooms.

“Digital switching” is a term that refers to the modern habit of swiping (刷) through and fast-forwarding online videos. Researchers from Canada did some exploration of it.
Kay Y.Y.Tam, a psychology researcher, launched the study after noticing herself — and pretty much everyone else — swiping through online videos. This behavior was connected with the “Boredom Feedback Model”, a theory she had published in 2021. Boredom, she proposed, is rooted in attention shifts. These shifts often occur when there’s a gap between how engaged people actually feel and how engaged they want to feel. The unpleasant emotion can develop when a situation lacks novelty or meaning.
“As digital switching involves frequent attention shifts, I wondered how this behavior might influence our feelings of boredom,” Tam said.
In her study, more than 1,200 participants, many of them university students, first watched a single video for ten minutes. They were then presented with seven shorter videos, with the option to skip to the next. On average, they skipped eight times — but reported feeling more bored and less engaged when they watched the single video. Participants had a similar experience in another similar experiment.
“I’m convinced that switching, when it comes to videos, is not a good idea if the goal is to have an enjoyable experience,” said Erin Westgate, a professor of psychology. “Sitting and toughing it out is likely a better choice.”
The new findings add to a growing body of evidence that boredom is on the rise, despite a world filled with content we can access at all times. People who are bored often turn to their phones, only to feel more bored. Swiping on social media has also been linked to increased feelings of boredom.
Boredom can motivate people to explore their environment and to stop investing time in an activity that has little to offer. However, if we rely too much on quick escapes, it would be like an animal jumping from tree to tree in search of food without staying long enough to see if a tree bears fruit. That animal risks starvation.
12.What is the cause of attention shifts according to Tam’s theory?
A.The feeling of boredom. B.The unsatisfied desire.
C.The degree of engagement. D.The lack of emotion.
13.What does Tam’s study of “digital switching” focus on?
A.Its reason. B.Its consequence. C.The theory behind it. D.The solution to it.
14.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To solve a problem. B.To make a suggestion.
C.To raise a question. D.To give a warning.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Digital Switching: the End of Endless Boredom
B.Digital Switching: the Result of Endless Boredom
C.Digital Switching: the Trap of Endless Boredom
D.Digital Switching: the Root of Endless Boredom

McCall,64, spent the night in a hotel in the tiny town of Cleveland, Tennessee. The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing,” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the 20th century.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.

故选A项。
根据Who can play?部分的“Please note: Because of the technology involved, virtual reality experiences are not recommended for pregnant women, people with heart problems, or people with balance or vision problems. (请注意:由于所涉及的技术,不建议孕妇、心脏病患者或有平衡或视力问题的人进行虚拟现实体验。)”可知,有心脏病的人不适合进行这项冒险。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据Prices for the experience部分的“Standard price (over age 12): €15 (12岁以上标准价:15欧元)”和“Discount rate for children (aged 8 — 11) and people with disabilities: €12 (8至11岁儿童和残疾人优惠价:12欧元)”可知,这名母亲的票价是15欧元,9岁儿子的票价是12欧元,因此一共需支付27(=15+12)欧元。故选C项。
4.C 5.D 6.C 7.C
根据第一段“Alaa el-Habashu was shopping for food when he came across a dilapidated (破旧的) 17th-century house being used as a butcher’s shop in the historic Cairo neighbourhood of al-Darb al-Ahmai. (Alaa el-Habashu在购买食物时,在开罗历史悠久的al-Darb al-Ahmai街区,发现了一座被用作肉铺的、破旧的17世纪房屋)”和第二段中“‘I was surprised by the beauty’, the U. S.-trained architect said of the house.(“我被它的美惊呆了,”这位在美国受训的建筑师这样评价这座房子)”可知,el-Habashi在开罗老城的al-Darb al-Ahmar区域发现了一座美丽且有历史意义的房子。故选C项。
根据第三段“Determined to save the building, el-Habashi bought it in 2009. Then he spent ten years restoring the house which he named Bayt Yakan and tried to turn it into a community space.(决心拯救这座建筑,el-Habashi在2009年买下了它。然后他花了十年时间修复这座他命名为Bayt Yakan的房子,并试图将其变成一个社区空间)”可知,el-Habashi对Bayt Yakan房子进行了长时间的修复。故选D项。
6.推理判断题。根据第六段“E-Habashi said there were once around 600 historic houses with similar courtyards — all built facing northwest to catch the cool wind — but just 24 are protected as heritage sites. ‘As for the rest of them, those that are still standing, who knows what state they are in?’ he said. ‘Every day, another one gets pulled down. The loss of such heritage would be irreparable.’(E-Habashi说,这里曾经有大约600座带有类似庭院的历史建筑,它们都是朝西北建造的,以捕捉凉爽的风,但只有24座被保护为遗产地。“至于其余那些仍然矗立的,谁知道它们现在处于什么状态?”他说。“每天都有一座被拆除。这样的遗产损失将是无法弥补的。”)”可知,第六段中的数字表明在600座历史建筑中,只有24座得到保护,说明当地历史建筑的保护远不能令人满意。故选C项。
7.细节理解题。根据最后一段中el-Habashi的话“I hope the old houses can help solve modern problems. They can bring some peace to the neighbourhood. I would love for these houses to become your local parks, where women can bring their kids and sit in the garden.(我希望老房子可以帮助解决现代问题。他们可以给周边地区带来一些安宁。我希望这些房子能成为你们当地的公园,妇女们可以带着孩子坐在花园里)”可知,el-Habashi希望Bayt Yakan成为社区居民聚集并享受安宁的场所,能成为人们聚集在一起寻找宁静的地方。故选C项。

9.细节理解题。根据第四段“Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code (二维码) for use.(与使用共享自行车类似,用户可以通过智能手机应用程序找到共享健身房的位置,提前预订房间,然后需要扫描二维码才能使用)”可知,人们需要提前预订房间才能使用共享健身房。故选B。
通读全文,并根据第一段“After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.(在自行车和雨伞在全中国实现了共享使用之后,一些公司开始关注健身市场,于是共享健身房在北京市的街头也出现了)”可知,文章介绍了在中国出现的新兴产业:共享健身房以及共享健身房的一些特点和使用方法和这个项目的创立过程等。 故选A。

根据第三段““As digital switching involves frequent attention shifts, I wondered how this behavior might influence our feelings of boredom,” Tam said.(“由于数字切换涉及到频繁的注意力转移,我想知道这种行为会如何影响我们的无聊感,”Tam说)”可知,Tam对“数字转移”的研究重点是最终导致的结果。故选B。
根据最后一段“Boredom can motivate people to explore their environment and to stop investing time in an activity that has little to offer. However, if we rely too much on quick escapes, it would be like an animal jumping from tree to tree in search of food without staying long enough to see if a tree bears fruit. That animal risks starvation.(无聊可以激励人们去探索周围的环境,停止在没有什么意义的活动上投入时间。然而,如果我们过于依赖快速脱离,就会像一只动物从一棵树跳到另一棵树去寻找食物,而没有停留足够长的时间来看看一棵树是否结果。那只动物有饿死的危险)”可知,最后一段的主要目的是给出警告。故选D。
15.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段““Digital switching” is a term refers to the modern habit of swiping (刷) through and fast-forwarding online videos. Researchers from Canada did some exploration of it.(“数字转换”是一个术语,指的是在网络视频中快速切换的现代习惯。来自加拿大的研究人员对此进行了一些探索)”可知,文章主要解释了什么是“数字转换”以及这种行为产生的原因和带来的影响可知,C选项“数字转换:无尽无聊的陷阱”最符合文章标题。故选C。

As we all know, music performs an important role in our daily life. It enables us to feel relaxed both mentally and physically, giving us energy. When I’m in trouble, music can lift up my spirits and inspire me to overcome difficulties. The Chinese traditional music is my favourite, which sounds peaceful and touches my soul. I hope all of you will somehow begin to treasure music and make it a part of your life. Thank you.

47.One possible version:
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! It was a piece of cake to me.” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. I carefully connected everything. After a few adjustments, the Internet was up and running. “Done!” I announced confidently. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Soon, people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered joyfully as she packed flowers. Mr. Jackson smiled warmly and handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone moved quickly to keep up with orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. Surprisingly, the roses sold out in half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized competence wasn’t avoiding mistakes, but facing them and making the most of my strengths.
