When Mia was 11 years old, she went to visit her grandma in the countryside. She loved spending time at her grandma’s house, especially in the garden. But one thing surprised her: her grandma never threw away any food waste. Instead, she put it in a big bin in the corner of the garden.
“What are you doing with all that food waste?” Mia asked.
“I'm making compost,” her grandma explained. “Compost is a natural fertilizer that helps plants grow. It’s made from food waste, leaves and grass clippings.”
Mia was very interested. She watched her grandma turn the compost bin every few days. After a few months, the food waste had turned into dark, rich soil. Her grandma used it to grow vegetables and flowers in her garden.
When Mia got back home, she decided to start making compost too. She asked her parents to buy her a small compost bin for their backyard. She started putting all her food waste-fruit peels, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells-into the bin.
At first, her parents were skeptical. But when they saw how much better their garden looked after using the compost, they became supporters. Mia also told her friends about composting. Together, they started a composting program at their school.
Now, three years later, the school has a big compost bin. All the food waste from the dining hall is turned into compost, which is used to grow vegetables in the school garden. The vegetables are then used to make meals for the students.

Will Glaciers Disappear?
Do you know Greenland (格陵兰岛)? It lies near the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Recently, this island has attracted much attention as a worldwide focus. Now we will discuss its glacier melting crisis (危机)—because it is closely related to the future of all mankind. The UN named March 21st as “World Glacier Day” in 2025. Glaciers are not just beautiful ice worlds—they are important to all life on Earth.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, has a huge ice sheet about 1.8 million square kilometers and 1,500 meters thick on average. Over the past 30 years, its average temperature has risen by about 1.5℃. This small change has made its ice melt (融化) faster. In 2022 alone, Greenland lost 6 billion tons of ice in one day. If all its ice melts, global sea levels will rise by about 7 meters, putting many coastal cities and island countries at risk of being underwater.
Glaciers store nearly 70% of Earth’s freshwater. They also act as Earth’s “air conditioners (空调)”, keeping the planet’s temperature stable. However, human activities like burning fossil fuels have warmed the planet. Scientists predict that by 2100, the world’s glaciers could lose 25-29% of their mass if we do not cut greenhouse gas emissions (排放). Therefore, China will achieve carbon neutrality (碳中和) by 2060 to slow down glacier melting. Small actions matter. Saving paper, turning off unused lights, and choosing green travel can all help slow down glacier melt. We cannot let these natural wonders disappear forever.
37.Which map shows Greenland?
A. B. C. D.
38.What did NOT take place in Greenland in 2022?
① Its temperature dropped by 1.5℃. ② It lost 6 billion tons of ice in one day.
③ Its ice sheet became 2,100 meters thick. ④ Sea levels rose by 7 meters there.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②④
39.How much fresh water do the Earth’s “air conditioners” nearly store on Earth?
A.25%. B.29%. C.30%. D.70%.
40.Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A.A storybook. B.A science magazine. C.A travel guide. D.A history book.

Volunteering has gradually become a popular lifestyle among middle school students these days. It not only brings warmth to people in need around us, but also shapes our personality during adolescence. 41 Yet plenty of teenagers are eager to join volunteer work but don’t know where to make a start. The following suggestions can offer them practical guidance.
First, decide on volunteer fields based on your own hobbies. You can devote yourself to charity projects for underprivileged children or join teams devoted to community environmental improvement. 42 Without inner driving force, you are likely to lose passion and drop out easily when facing tiredness and trivial work.
Second, beginners are supposed to begin with nearby simple tasks instead of distant large-scale projects. There is no need to rush into volunteer programs in remote mountain regions right away. 43 Such accessible activities help you accumulate practical experience and get used to volunteer rhythm step by step.
44 It is common to meet unexpected troubles while volunteering. You may waste whole afternoons organizing donations but receive little praise, or meet uncooperative people during rubbish sorting. Never be discouraged by these unpleasant moments, for hardship helps cultivate your patience and sense of responsibility.
After finishing your first volunteer activity, don’t fix yourself on one single type of service forever. 45 As you keep exploring different volunteer fields, you will harvest unexpected growth and become more warm-hearted and mature.
A.Interest is the lasting power to stick to volunteer jobs.
B.It provides precious life lessons which classroom learning cannot replace.
C.Third, learn to stay positive when facing troubles in volunteer service.
D.You are allowed to try various volunteer activities in different fields later.
E.Almost all volunteer activities require plenty of money and professional training.
F.Donating used items or park cleaning in the neighbourhood are ideal beginner choices.
G.It is totally unrealistic for students to take part in any outdoor volunteer activities.

Warm summer air melts (使融化) them, and ocean current (洋流) break them down. 58 , climate change is making ice melt much faster in Antarctica (南极洲). Ocean temperatures reached a new high in 2025. This change in heat is 59 same as setting off 12 Hiroshima bombs (广岛原子弹) in the ocean every second for the whole year.
Even though A23a is far 60 people, its melting has greatly changed the world. When it broke apart, it gave out 61 (pollute) into the ocean. This might upset the balance of nature. The broken ice pieces could also make it hard for animals like penguins to find food. Some pieces are so big 62 they cause trouble to nearby ships and fishing activities.
It’s time for people to do something with this 63 (embarrass) situation.
