Body Language Around the World
In cross-cultural communication, body language is just as important as spoken words. However, the same gesture or posture (姿势) can mean very different things in different parts of the world. Here are some examples for you to understand it.
In the West, people like to look at each other when they talk. Strong eye contact is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab (阿拉伯的) countries.
Finns and Japanese are embarrassed when others keep staring at (盯着) them during a talk. They only make eye contact at the start of a discussion.
Tapping (轻敲) your nose means “secret” in England.
In Italy, the same gesture means “be careful”.
Nodding your head usually means “yes”.
But in Bulgaria and Greece, nodding up and down means “no”.
In many cultures, like Italy and the U.S., people use their arms freely when talking. They often wave their arms around.
Northern Europeans don’t like gesturing with their arms. They think it shows insincerity (不真诚) and is too dramatic (戏剧化的). In Japan, gesturing with broad arm movements is thought to be impolite.
Sitting cross-legged is common in North America and some European countries.
In many countries in Asia and the Middle East, sitting like this is not respectful.
19. Peter wants to make friends with Rimi, a new Japanese student in his class. What may the author advise him to do when he talks to Rimi?
A. Sit with his legs crossed.
B. Stare at her throughout the talk.
C. Make eye contact at the start of the talk.
D. Make broad gestures with his arms.

Microplastics: A Hidden Danger in Nature
Nowadays, plastic pollution is everywhere on Earth. People use plastic bags, bottles and many plastic products every day. Most of them are thrown away carelessly and break into very small pieces. These tiny pieces are called microplastics. They are smaller than five millimeters and cannot be seen easily by our eyes.
Microplastics are dangerous to animals and nature. They have been found in oceans, rivers, lakes and even deep under the ground. Fish and sea birds often mistake microplastics for food and eat them. After eating the small plastic pieces, they feel full but get no real nutrition. Slowly, they become weak, fall ill or even die. What’s worse, microplastics can also travel with running water and enter farm soil.
Scientists also find microplastics in drinking water and some food we eat every day. It is not clear how great the harm is to human bodies right now, but more and more people start to worry about the hidden risk.
To cut down microplastic pollution, everyone can do simple things. First, use fewer single-use plastic products, such as plastic straws and lunch boxes. Second, sort rubbish correctly and never throw plastic waste into rivers or fields. Third, choose eco—friendly (环境友好) materials instead of plastic when possible.
The problem of microplastics is small in size but huge in danger. If we all make small changes in daily life, we can protect water, soil, animals and ourselves from the invisible pollution.
24. What are microplastics according to Paragraph 1?
A. Special plastic for food use. B. Tiny broken plastic pieces.
C. Big plastic bottles in the sea. D. Plastic we can see clearly.
25. Why do sea animals get hurt by microplastics?
A. Because they drink too much water with plastic.
B. Because they take microplastics as food.
C. Because microplastics make the water dirty.
D. Because they don’t need plastic in water.
26. What is the main idea of the whole passage?
A. Why people like using single—use plastics.
B. The harm of the use of plastic in daily life.
C. The danger of microplastics and ways to protect nature.
D. How water animals take microplastics as food in deep water.
【答案】24. B 25. B 26. C
【解析】

【26题详解】
通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了微塑料的定义及其对动物和自然的危害,并提出了减少微塑料污染的建议,C选项“The danger of microplastics and ways to protect nature.”涵盖了文章的主要内容。
选择最恰当的选项完成短文。
Watching Wild Ducks at Wetland Reserve (保护区)
Last weekend, I visited the city wetland with my biology teacher to study water birds. When we got to the lake, we found a mallard duck family floating on the water. The mother duck swam ahead, and five ducklings ____27____ her one by one all the way.

After the dog left, the ducks came out again slowly. My teacher wrote down our findings and said, “Water birds are key to wetland balance. We must never chase or feed them randomly, or we will ____31____ their natural life rules.”

A. feel very excited B. think you don’t like them
C. believe you are very smart D. think you are not sincere

At first, the ducks swam away quickly when they saw us. My teacher said, “Stay calm—wild birds are sensitive to humans.” We sat on the lakeside bench ____28____ and waited patiently. Soon the mother duck swam back. She hid food under the water plant’s ____29____ in shallow (浅的) water to prepare food for cold days, and the little ducklings copied her actions.
Suddenly, a running dog rushed to the lakeside barking loudly. The mother duck made quick quacks to call her babies. All ducklings swam into thick water plants right away. I was ____30____ at how fast they responded to danger to keep safe.
After the dog left, the ducks came out again slowly. My teacher wrote down our findings and said, “Water birds are key to wetland balance. We must never chase or feed them randomly, or we will ____31____ their natural life rules.”
On our way out of the reserve, I looked back at the lake. I understood that every wild bird has its own survival ways. We should protect their living space and not disturb them. Next month, our class will come again. I hope to see the ducklings grow up. Spending time watching wild birds in their home is a (an) ____32____ experience, which teaches us to respect wetland nature.
