If you put two bottles of water—one hot and the other cold in a fridge, which will freeze quicker? The cold water, right? But in fact, the hot water most probably freezes first. Strange, isn't it? Scientists call it the Mpemba effect(姆潘巴效应).
Once Erasto Mpemba, a school boy, was making ice cream in a cooking class. He was surprised to find that a heated mix froze more quickly than a cold one. He wondered why this happened. When Osborne, a university scientist, came to the school, he asked him about it. Osborne took it seriously. He suggested that they work together to find out why. They tested many times by using water with temperatures from 25°C to 90°C, and found that the higher the water temperature was, the less time it took the water to freeze. It means water at 25°C takes the longest time to freeze and water at 90°C takes the shortest.
What causes this effect? Some scientists think that the gas leaves water as water heats up, which makes it freeze quicker. Other scientists think differently. They say water in a bottle keeps moving, with hot water rising and cold water going down. This convection is stronger in the hotter bottle, which makes hot water lose heat faster than cold water.
Last winter, the Mpemba effect became popular online. Many people went to Harbin and threw hot water into the freezing air. The hot water would turn to ice at once, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful ice mist in the air. People took videos of this process and put them on the Internet.
39. What is the Mpemba effect?
A. A study plan. B. A test result.
C. A scientific finding. D. A natural guess.
40. What does the word "convection" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The wind in the fridge B. The force from outside
C. The movement of heat in water D. The weight of the water bottle
41. Which of the following can show Mpemba and Osborne's discovery?
C
For humans, we communicate using words-English, Chinese, or other languages. But in the AI world, the only language AI can understand is tokens. In simple terms, a token is the smallest unit of information that AI processes (处理).
When we speak to AI tools like GPT or DeepSeek, our words are translated into tokens and numbers and then sent into the large language model. The AI then receives the token ID and starts computing to solve our problems. For example, take the sentence: "How are you today?" If we tokenize this sentence using the GPT model, we get five tokens, including the characters and punctuation marks. Then, each token gets its own ID number.
If we use the GPT image model to generate a picture, it consumes (消耗) about 500 to 1,000 tokens. When we ask an AI chatbot to explain the meaning of tokens, the conversation may include about 2,000 words, which equals about 2,500 tokens (i.e. one token ~ 0.75 English words in GPT). The number of tokens used differs across different languages and depends on the tokenizer as well.
With the fast growth of Open Claw earlier this year, the use of tokens hit a new level, especially in China. In March, China's average daily tokens usage went beyond 140 trillion (万亿). For companies, computing power is no longer just a daily cost. It has become an important resource that helps them win in the competition. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said at GTC 2026: "The turning point of reasoning (推理) has arrived." Tokens have truly become a key part of the global competition.
42. How many tokens would the sentence "Wow, that is great!" have in GPT model?
A. Four. B.Five. C.Six. D.Seven.
43. The following sentence can be best placed at the end of .
This is how AI breaks down and understands human language.
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
44. What can we learn from the article?
A. Tokens will be much cheaper in the future.
B. AI's reasoning ability is becoming more important.
C Token usage in China is the highest across the world.
D. Explaining tokens with an AI chatbot always uses 2,000 tokens.
D
A ship had sailed around the world and was on its homeward journey. The weather was calm and everyone was on deck (甲板). A large monkey was jumping around among the people, making faces and copying them. One could see that she knew they enjoyed watching her, and this excited her still more.
The monkey jumped towards a twelve-year-old boy, the captain's son, and took his hat, put it on her own and quickly climbed up the mast (桅杆). Everyone laughed. The boy, now hatless, didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.
He shouted at the monkey, but this only made her begin to tear the hat and make more faces.
The sailors laughed louder, but the boy turned red, threw off his jacket and rushed up after the monkey. In no time he had climbed the rope ladder to the first yardarm. But just as the boy was about to catch his hat, the monkey quickly climbed even higher.
"I'll get you!" the boy shouted and also climbed higher. The animal led him on, climbing still higher, to the top of the high mast.
Up there, holding fast to a rope with one foot, the monkey moved her body forward, and hung the hat on the end of the highest yardarm. Then she reached the very top of the mast and laughed out loud. It was about four feet from the mast to the tip of the yardarm where the hat hung, and only by letting go of both the rope and the mast could it be reached.
The boy was so upset by now that, forgetting all danger, he stepped onto this highest yardarm, balancing himself the best he could with his arms.
Everyone on deck was looking in silence. They knew that if the boy fell, he would be killed.
Suddenly someone cried out in horror. The cry brought the boy to his senses. He looked down and began to shake.
At that moment, the captain came out. When he saw his son in danger, he quickly raised his gun and shouted, "Jump! Jump into the water! Or I'll fire!"
The boy stood there, not understanding.
"Jump! One, two..."
As soon as his father cried "three," the boy stepped out and jumped into the sea. At once, several sailors jumped in after him.

C. Because the sailors were laughing at him.

七、阅读表达(共3小题:1分+2分+3分,满分6分)
Have you ever heard of upcycling? It is a way of turning old or unnecessary things into something useful and often beautiful.
Is it the same as recycling? Recycling usually takes old things, like paper and glass, and breaks them down to make a new product, while upcycling focuses on creative reuse. For example, you might make a bag out of an old T-shirt. As a result, upcycling is greener than recycling. Upcycling only needs your own ideas and work, but recycling needs energy or water to break down things. Also, the upcycled item usually has a greater value than before.
Upcycling isn't a new idea. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the old times. In those days, things were repurposed over and over until they were not useful any more. Upcycling is a way of life. Things shouldn't be just thrown away when they can be saved and turned into something useful.
Grace, a young woman from the UK, takes used tea bags and turns them into dresses, shoes and even hats. Every day she drinks some tea, then dries out the tea bags with the tea still in them. When they're dry, she takes the tea out and puts the bags together to make an item of clothing. This can take a long time, but Grace has made lots of artworks.
Making items (物品) from old things or buying upcycled products? Both are great for the environment and give you cool and useful things. Give it a try!

64. How is upcycling different from recycling? (List two points)

Among all my collections, a handmade cloth bag stands out as my most precious treasure.
I got it when I took part in a volunteer activity last year. An elderly volunteer made it by hand and gave it to all young volunteers as encouragement.
This bag carries warm kindness. It tells me to keep helping others. Every time I use it, I feel warm and powerful. It is not just a bag, but also a symbol of love.
