Dogs are the most popular pets in the world. They make us happier and healthier, but scientists have found that they can also harm the environment in some ways.
One main trouble is dog waste. Unlike wild animals that live on natural food, pet dogs eat processed food, so their waste can pollute soil and water. When left on the ground, dog poop (排泄物) washes into rivers during rains, spreading something harmful to the environment. In cities, dog waste is one of the top causes of water pollution.
In some natural areas, dogs also cause problems. Studies show that when dogs walk through forests, the number of birds and small animals becomes smaller. The smell and sounds of dogs can make wild animals avoid these areas. Some even leave their babies behind. In countries like Australia, pet dogs have hurt or killed local animals, including rare penguins (企鹅). This is bad for nature because many plants need these animals to help them grow and spread their seeds (种子).
There are over 700 million pet dogs worldwide, and their large numbers are making things worse. The problem isn’t dogs themselves, but how people look after them without thinking about nature.
Since dogs will always be our important family, we need to find ways to enjoy the time with them while also protecting the environment. Simple actions like cleaning up after our pets and keeping them away from special natural areas can make a big difference. Since we share the earth with many other living things, it’s our responsibility (责任) to keep it safe for everyone.
14. What does the underlined word “processed” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Found in nature. B. Freshly cooked. C. Made in factories. D. prepared at home.
15. What happens when dogs walk through forests?
A. They help plants spread their seeds.
B. Dogs kill some wild animals for food.
C Birds and small animals become more active.
D. Wild animals are afraid of dogs and they run away or hide.
16. What is mentioned in the passage about dogs and the environment?
A. Dogs can help protect nature in some ways.
B. Dogs sometimes leave their babies behind in natural areas.
C. Dog waste washes into rivers and pollutes water when it rains.
D It’s hard for dog owners to take action to protect the environment.
17. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards keeping dogs as pets?
A. Strongly disagree. B. Supportive but careful.

The abandoned (被遗弃的) house at the end of Maple Street had always made the neighborhood kids afraid. Its broken windows and walls seemed to whisper warnings. But to 12-year-old Lena, it was a mystery (谜团) waiting to be solved. She often walked past it after school, wondering why such a large house stood empty. The overgrown garden and broken gate only made her more curious (好奇的).
One afternoon, she noticed an old man entering the house. Curious, Lena followed. Her heart raced as she stepped inside, but what she saw surprised her. The man was painting the walls with bright colors—ocean blues, sunset oranges, and forest greens. “It’s... beautiful,” Lena said, breaking the silence. The man smiled. “I’m Mr. Clark. This was my parents’ home. I want to turn it into a community art space. ”
Lena returned daily. She cleaned floors, passed brushes, and listened to Mr. Clark’s stories. At first, she only watched Mr. Clark paint, too nervous to try herself. Soon, neighbors noticed the changes. They began to join: a baker (面包师) painted a wall with bread designs, and even children added handprint flowers. A teacher painted birds on the ceiling, while teenagers added keys of a piano to the stairs. Slowly, the walls were full of their stories.
On the opening day, the house was filled with laughter. Families took photos, and kids chose their favorite designs. Mr. Clark handed Lena a brush. “Your turn.” Her hand shook as she painted a tiny star. “It’s perfect,” he said. Lena smiled, realizing her small star was now part of something big. And in that moment, the house no longer felt abandoned—it was alive with shared pride.
18. What caused Lena to enter the house?

19. What can we learn from the text about Mr. Clark’s plan?

What is the secret to happiness? In a Ted Talk, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said he had found the answer: flow (心流).
Flow is the experience of being fully lost in a certain task. Csikszentmihalyi described it in his Ted Talk as an exciting feeling which happens naturally. He says “Flow is an ideal state (状态) of mind where every part of the mind and body work together towards one purpose. Then we feel our best and we do our best.” People can get into a flow state when doing “just about anything”, he adds.
After interviewing a lot of people who said they had experienced the flow, Csikszentmihalyi found five conditions in flow states:
· Forgetting about time · Having a sense of excitement
· Knowing exactly what you want · Getting feedback (反馈) on what you are doing right now
· Knowing your purpose can be achieved, even if (即使) it is difficult
A flow state sounds lovely. So ________?
“It is impossible to decide when to get into flow.” says Norsworthy, a leader of Flow Center. But we can get more chances to experience it, he adds.
The key to entering a flow state is choosing a proper task according to your ability and skills. A task that doesn’t need much skill, like washing the clothes, may lead to little interest. A task with great difficulty where one doesn’t have the needed skill may make people nervous. However, if a task is difficult and we have the skills necessary to finish it, there’s higher chance for us to experience flow.
Norsworthy talks about his running practice. “When I first got started, it was not a flow state at all,” he says. As he practised more, he began to achieve a flow state. However, he also mentions that there are some actions that may stop you getting into a flow state. Knowing how to avoid these actions is important.
22. How did Csikszentmihalyi find the conditions of flow?
A. By doing some science tests. B. By reading books about happiness.
C. By talking about flow in his Ted Talk. D. By asking people about their experiences.
23. Which of the following shows a person is in a flow state?
A. When I am reading interesting books, I have no sense of time.
B. When I am doing a task, I don’t know what I should do next.
C. When I am in a football team, I find myself less important.
D. When I finish a task, my teacher doesn’t give me his opinion.
24. Which is the most suitable for the blank ________?
A. why is flow state so important B. when do you enter a flow state
C. how do you achieve a flow state D. what is a flow state
25. What may the writer talk about next?
A. The usages of flow. B. The killers of flow.
C. The examples of flow. D. The activities of flow.

C. Birds and small animals become more active.
D. It’s hard for dog owners to take action to protect the environment.
17. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards keeping dogs as pets?

Once, I noticed an old man who got lost on the street. I accompanied him and helped him find his family. It made me feel proud to be of help.
For teenagers, fulfilling social responsibilities is of great significance. It not only helps others but also enriches our own lives and makes us better-developed individuals. We should actively shoulder our responsibilities and contribute to a more harmonious society.
