UNIT 4 Exploring literature Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2026·江苏常州一模)Jules Verne is widely regarded as one of the fathers of science fiction. His Extraordinary Voyages (航海) series transport readers on grand adventures to the far reaches of Earth and beyond. But Verne did more than just tell entertaining stories — he also predicted over 100 modern-day inventions and technologies in his writings. For example, in the 1889 short story In the Year 2889, Verne painted a picture of a highly networked world with global multimedia communications. He described the “phonotelephone” which sent sound and images over great distances. The main character, Fritz Napoleon Smith, is able to easily communicate via this technology with his wife on another continent: “Mr Smith was able distinctly to see his wife despite the distance that separated him from her ...Mrs Smith immediately appeared on the telephotic screen, with her features smiling and her eyes moist (潮湿的) with tears.” Verne’s technically-grounded adventure tales represented a new approach to imagining the future through fiction.Unlike other writers of his day who penned more fanciful or supernatural stories, Verne aimed for realism in his futuristic visions, always basing them on cutting-edge science and his own extensive research. This laid the foundation for the “hard science fiction” of the 20th century and beyond. Verne is often thought of as a technological optimist, a champion of scientific progress and innovation. But his writings also reveal another perspective. Many of his stories feature a brilliant but mad scientist whose inventions ultimately bring more harm than good.Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea uses his submarine (潜艇) to violently attack ships. For Verne, human nature determined whether technology would be a force for good or a source of destruction. The spirit of adventure in Verne’s timeless stories will live on, continuing to inspire generations to push the boundaries of the possible and create the world of tomorrow. That is perhaps the greatest achievement of the extraordinary voyages of Jules Verne. 1.How does Mr Smith contact his wife in In the Year 2889?( ) A.By holding an in-person talk. B.By making a long-distance call. C.By sending a letter back home. D.By having an instant video chat. 2.What is the “hard science fiction” based on?( ) A.The unrealistic fantasies. B.The fictional technologies. C.The latest research findings. D.The imagined future worlds. 3.What can we infer about Verne from Captain Nemo’s story?( ) A.He is disappointed with human nature. B.He is aware of the danger of technology. C.He is in favour of scientific development. D.He is different from the writers of his time. 4.Which of the following best describes Jules Verne according to the text?( ) A.Strong-willed. B.Fantasy-seeking. C.Positive-minded. D.Forward-thinking. B (2026·江苏射阳三模)At first glance, the scientist Charles Darwin and the poet Emily Dickinson would seem to have little in common. In Natural Magic, literary scholar Renee Bergland seeks to convince the reader otherwise, interweaving the lives, work, and history of these two towering figures of the 19th-century.In doing so, Bergland shows definitively that they shared deep sensibilities about the natural world. They were both keen observers in their own home gardens. For both, the “magic” of nature could be found in the physical and material rather than the supernatural. They found nature to be a place enchanted by its own mysteries, joys, and sorrows. Taking the form of a joint biography (传记), Natural Magic alternates between Darwin and Dickinson over the course of 16 chapters, progressing simultaneously (同时地) in time. While Bergland offers comprehensive descriptions, building on the extensive work of other biographers and scholars, the book’s own magic shines in the conversation created between its subjects’ bodies of work. When viewed as part of a historical dialogue, Darwin and Dickinson amplify (阐发) each other’s work, revealing the science in her poetry and the poetry in his science. Natural Magic further situates both writers in the history of science as it developed from “natural philosophy” into specialized disciplines throughout the 19th-century.Bergland lays extensive groundwork for the social and cultural forces that shaped each thinker in a time when the sciences and arts were more closely connected. Bergland herself displays moments of beauty in her writing, particularly in her vivid descriptions of the wonder of scientific discoveries in the 19th-century.“Changing angles of sunlight, the unchanging stars, and ...the bright colors of the great auroras lightened up the vastness of planetary space,” she writes, for example. Ultimately, the book offers readers a historical and biographical look into the magic offered by the natural world as reflected in the works of two major 19th-century thinkers.Bergland concludes that in a time of climate crisis, we must recover this kind of dialogue across the sciences and the arts, emphasizing our shared sense of wonder in nature. 5.What does Bergland aim to demonstrate about Darwin and Dickinson?( ) A.Their inborn talents. B.Their great achievements. C.Their literary background. D.Their unseen commonalities. 6.What can be learned concerning Natural Magic?( ) A.It creates dialogues between works. B.It is a co-authored masterpiece. C.It contradicts other scholars’ views. D.It focuses on natural philosophy. 7.Which best describes Bergland’s language in describing the wonder of scientific discoveries?( ) A.Straightforward. B.Academic. C.Humorous. D.Poetic. 8.Which of the following might Bergland agree with?( ) A.History should never be forgotten. B.Nature should be treated with awe. C.Wonder is the beginning of wisdom. D.The dawn of science came too late. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2026·南京中华中学二模)In literature, flat and round characters offer distinct approaches to character development.Flat characters are defined by a singular symbolic characteristic.9. For example, the evil step-mothers in traditional fairy tales are flat characters, serving to drive the story with their simplicity. By contrast, Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber exemplifies (举例说明) round characters, defined by inner conflicts, contradictions, and personal growth.10. They reflect the unpredictability of humanity, making them more relatable and dynamic to readers. In earlier literary works, flat characters often symbolized heroic ideals, such as the brave heroes in The Odyssey. As society moves away from idealized heroes, literature focuses more on characters’ personal struggles, reflecting how writers began to see humanity in a more complex way. With the rise of realism in the 19th-century, round characters gained popularity, as seen in Jane Eyre, which allowed for the exploration of personal identity and internal conflict.11. However, not every character that appears in a story needs to be deep.12. Imagine the main character is taking a taxi to a hotel. If we make the taxi driver a round character, the focus could shift from the main character to the taxi driver, potentially taking attention away from the main plot. 13. They together create tension and richness in a literary work.Flat characters provide clarity and focus, simplifying themes and making them accessible to readers.Meanwhile, round characters reveal human complexity, showing life beyond black and white. A.Neither type of characters is better than the other. B.Such characters stand out for complexity and depth. C.We don’t get heartfelt backstory to enrich their roles. D.If flat characters are round, they may “steal the show”. E.This shows how literature reflects evolving social views. F.Round characters are more engaging than flat characters. G.They are more like a spotlight, drawing attention to one aspect. Ⅲ. (2026·山东临沂一模)I couldn’t believe the offer I was reading.“Yes, I’d love to do your TV show,” I typed.Months before this e-mail conversation, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to have asked for the opportunity. My complicated journey began as I undertook a nearly impossible mission to recreate my father-in-law’s military history. All his records were gone and the Army records center in St.Louis, Missouri, had suffered a fire, destroying Dad’s records.I wanted to fill in the blanks for him, but Dad was no longer with us.After he died, in his bedroom, my husband George found a small, worn box.“What is that?” I asked him.“A pocket watch that Dad carried through his time in the Army during World War Ⅱ,” he answered.“Wow! It is special,” I responded.“More than you know.Dad gave it to me before I left for basic training in 1961.I carried it during my tour of duty.” Tears shone in his eyes.Later, our son-in-law was sent to the front line.He was the third in line to receive the pocket watch. Meanwhile, after a full year of research, with the help of survivors who served with Dad, I was able to gather all his missing Army records.I thought my mission was completed. When our son-in-law returned home, having survived a fierce battle, he returned the pocket watch to us in an emotional account of how it had saved his life. The recreation of Dad’s military history now had another amazing story within it.Over fifty years, three generations of service members had carried the same pocket watch. I held the newly returned military pocket watch in my hands and said, “If only you could talk.” Then, I had an idea.Maybe I could be the voice of it and make it an narrator of the story.Eight years later, Guiding Pocket Watch was published, a historical novel evolving from digging into Dad’s military history.Writing a book is hard work, but it’s only the first step for me.Marketing and publicity are equally difficult. My family and friends encouraged me to promote Guiding Pocket Watch through the media, such as newspapers, magazines, TV shows, etc. I told them I dare not approach the media for fear of being rejected. Finally, I took their advice. He described the “phonotelephone” ...on another continent和第三段可知,Mr Smith通过即时视频聊天和妻子联系。 Ⅲ.
