Looking into a planter three feet off the ground, I discovered something unexpected: a nest of newborn rabbits. Five tiny babies lay together, eyes still closed, completely helpless. Over the next two weeks, I quietly observed them from a distance. They stayed hidden under leaves while their mother watched from the yard’s edge. She never came near when I was there, but I knew she was always present, silently protecting her young. As the rabbits grew, they began exploring. One day, a baby rabbit balanced on the planter’s edge, considering a jump. I wanted to help but knew I shouldn’t interfere (干涉). Soon, one by one, they began leaping off. Some landed smoothly; others stumbled. The last rabbit hesitated longest, trembling at the edge. I silently cheered for it. Finally, it jumped. That moment made me think about our own lives. We like to believe we can control everything with careful planning. Yet the experiences that truly shape us — moving to a new city, starting a relationship, becoming a parent — are all leaps into the unknown. Like the rabbits, we cannot know exactly where we will land. I used to think courage meant not being afraid. Now I understand it means being afraid but moving forward anyway. The rabbits didn’t jump because they felt safe. They jumped because staying where they were was no longer possible. I thought about my own leaps. Leaving a secure job without another one lined up felt terrifying, but staying would have meant giving up on growth. Holding my first newborn son in the hospital, I felt completely unprepared for parenthood. Yet somehow, we figure things out. We all face moments when we must leave what feels safe. Some of us leap early, some late. Some land well; others fall and try again. But the leap itself cannot be avoided. Fear is not always a signal to stop. Sometimes it simply means we are standing at the edge of something worth trying. In the end, life is less about holding onto safety and more about what we risk when we finally decide to jump. 24. Why did the mother rabbit stay away from her young? A. She was waiting for them to jump. B. She wanted to protect them secretly. C. She was teaching them to stay hidden. D. She was afraid of the author’s presence. 25. Why did the last baby rabbit finally decide to jump off the planter? A. It felt completely safe and ready to fly. B. The author silently encouraged it to leap. C. Staying on the edge was no longer a choice. D. It saw other baby rabbits landing smoothly below. 26. How has the author’s understanding of “courage” changed? A. From avoiding fear to removing all risks. B. From lacking fear to acting despite being afraid. C. From feeling safe to seeking dangerous situations. D. From controlling outcomes to accepting total failure. 27. What is the writer’s main idea? A. Planning removes fear. B. Gardens attract wildlife. C. Animals teach parenting. D. Life requires brave leaps. B 25. C 26. B 27. 根据第二段“She never came near when I was there, but I knew she was always present, silently protecting her young.(当我在那里时,她从不靠近,但我知道她总是在场,默默地保护着她的幼崽。)” 根据第五段“The rabbits didn’t jump because they felt safe. They jumped because staying where they were was no longer possible. (小兔子跳下来不是因为感到安全,而是因为待在原地已不可能。)”可知,最后一只兔子跳下是因为无法再留在原地。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“I used to think courage meant not being afraid. Now I understand it means being afraid but moving forward anyway. (我曾以为勇气就是不害怕。现在我明白,勇气是心怀恐惧却依然前行。)”可知,作者对勇气的理解从“不害怕”变为“虽害怕仍行动”。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,作者通过观察小兔子跳离花盆的经历,联想到人生中许多需要勇敢迈出步伐的时刻,并在最后一段总结“In the end, life is less about holding onto safety and more about what we risk when we finally decide to jump. (归根结底,生活不在于固守安全,而在于当我们最终决定跳跃时我们所承担的风险。)”可知,作者的主要观点是生活需要勇敢的跳跃。 C Being an expert birdwatcher is more than just a hobby; it might actually change your brain. New research suggests that these changes could improve thinking skills, even as you get older. A recent Canadian study compared the brains of 29 expert birders with those of 29 beginners. The experts, aged 24 to 75, were chosen based on their ability to identify birds, not just how long they had been watching them. The beginners, aged 22 to 79, enjoyed outdoor activities but lacked special bird knowledge. During tests, experts were much better at identifying both local and foreign bird species. Scientists used two types of MRI scans to examine the participants’ brains. The first type looked at brain structure. It showed that experts had denser (更密集的) brain tissue in areas linked to attention, memory, and recognizing objects. Denser tissue often means better communication between brain cells. The second type of scan watched brain activity while people identified birds. It revealed that experts used those same dense areas when trying to spot birds, especially unfamiliar ones. This suggests their brains had reorganized themselves to support this complex skill. Interestingly, these brain differences appeared in experts of all ages. While the study does not prove that birding stops mental decline, it suggests that such activities might support brain health in older adults. However, some experts warn about a “chicken-or-egg” problem: perhaps people with naturally sharper brains are simply more likely to become expert birders in the first place. Also, since participants were active outdoor lovers, their healthy lifestyles might also play a role. Other benefits might come from being in nature, walking, and socializing, all of which are good for the brain. Future studies should follow beginners over time to see if their brains change as they learn. Still, the main message is clear: the skills we practice deeply leave a mark on our brains. Whether it is birding, music, or sports, dedicating time to a complex interest can help build mental strength that lasts a lifetime. 28. What made the experts different from beginners in the study? A. Skill in telling birds apart. B. Age and education level. C. Years spent birdwatching. D. Amount of outdoor exercise. 29. What specific physical change was found in the experts’ brains? A. Larger brain size overall. B. Denser tissue in key areas. C. Fewer connections between cells. D. More active blood flow everywhere. 30. What is the “chicken-or-egg” problem mentioned in the text? A. Are experts born with better brains or trained? B. Do outdoor activities lead to better brain health? C. Can birdwatching alone explain the brain changes? D. Does a healthy lifestyle affect brain health more than birding? 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. MRI Scans Reveal Birders’ Secrets B. How to Become a Bird Expert Quickly C. Deep Hobbies Can Reshape Your Brain D. Why Older Adults Should Walk Outside 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. 根据第二段“The experts, aged 24 to 75, were chosen based on their ability to identify birds, not just how long they had been watching them. The beginners, aged 22 to 79, enjoyed outdoor activities but lacked special bird knowledge.(这些专家年龄在24岁至75岁之间,他们入选的标准是其识别鸟类的能力,而非观看鸟类的时间长短。初学者年龄在22岁至79岁之间,他们喜欢户外活动,但缺乏专业的鸟类知识。)”可知,在该研究中,专家与新手之间的区别体现在辨别鸟类的能力。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“It showed that experts had denser (更密集的) brain tissue in areas linked to attention, memory, and recognizing objects.(结果显示,专家们在与注意力、记忆和识别物体相关的区域拥有更密集的脑组织。)” 根据第四段“However, some experts warn about a “chicken-or-egg” problem: perhaps people with naturally sharper brains are simply more likely to become expert birders in the first place.(然而,一些专家对“先有鸡还是先有蛋”的问题提出了警告:也许天生思维更敏锐的人本身就更有可能成为观鸟专家。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段“Being an expert birdwatcher is more than just a hobby; it might actually change your brain. New research suggests that these changes could improve thinking skills, even as you get older.(成为一名专业的观鸟者远不止是一种爱好;它甚至可能改变你的大脑结构。新的研究表明,这些变化能够提升思维能力,而且这种效果在你年岁渐长时依然存在。)”和最后一段“Still, the main message is clear: the skills we practice deeply leave a mark on our brains. Whether it is birding, music, or sports, dedicating time to a complex interest can help build mental strength that lasts a lifetime.(不过,主要的启示是明确的:我们深入练习的技能会在我们的大脑中留下痕迹。无论是观鸟、音乐还是体育,投入时间去专注于一项复杂的兴趣爱好都能够帮助我们建立一生都有效的智力能力。)”可知,本文主要讲的是成为观鸟专家不仅仅是一种爱好,它实际上可能会改变大脑结构并提升思维能力,尤其是随着年龄增长,因此最好的题目是C选项“Deep Hobbies Can Reshape Your Brain(深度的爱好可以重塑你的大脑)”。 D Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have created some of the world’s smallest robots. These tiny machines are smaller than a grain of salt and can hardly be seen without a microscope. Yet, each robot contains a built-in computer, allowing it to control its own movements while swimming in water. For years, researchers have tried to build smaller robots. However, as robots shrink (缩小), they often become weak and break easily. To solve this problem, the new robots were designed without any moving parts, making them more durable. Leading the project, Marc Miskin explained, “We have managed to fit a brain, a sensor, and a motor into something almost invisible, and it can work for months.” Powering such small devices was a major challenge. The team used tiny solar panels, enabling the robots to run for months using only light. Since the solar panel takes up most of the space, there was little room left for other components. Fortunately, scientists from the University of Michigan developed a super-small computer that can be programmed using flashing lights. Once programmed, the robots operate independently. Moving through water proved difficult too. Small robots struggle to move through water, as it’s hard to push against it. Instead of pushing water backward like fish, these robots create a tiny electric field that causes charged atoms in the water to move. This movement pushes the robot forward. These robots can sense temperature and swim toward warmer areas. They even “communicate” through movement. For example, after measuring temperature, a robot might perform a small dance. Researchers watching under a microscope can interpret these dances to gather information, similar to how bees communicate. Though advanced, each robot costs only about one cent. Scientists believe this is just the beginning. In the future, such robots could monitor cell health inside the human body or work together in groups to complete complex tasks. This breakthrough opens exciting possibilities for science and medicine. 32. What does the underlined word “durable” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Able to last long. B. Very simple in design. C. Difficult to see with eyes. D. Costing very little money. 33. What is the most important challenge faced by scientists in making these robots functional? A. Programming the robots efficiently. B. Designing robots without moving parts. C. Ensuring the robots have enough power. D. Making the robots small enough to swim. 34. How do these tiny robots move forward through water? A. By pushing water backward like small fish. B. By using electric fields to shift charged atoms. C. By following the flow of warmer water currents. D. By turning around their tiny solar panels rapidly. 35. What does the example of the robot “dance” mainly show? A. Robots move like bees. B. Robots like warm water. C. Robots need human control. D. Robots send messages by actions. A 33. C 34. B 35. 根据划线词后文“We have managed to fit a brain, a sensor, and a motor into something almost invisible, and it can work for months.(我们成功地将大脑、传感器和电机整合进了一个几乎看不见的装置中,并且该装置能够持续运行数月之久)”可知,后文还提到能工作数月,对应耐用、使用时间久。 根据第四段“Instead of pushing water backward like fish, these robots create a tiny electric field that causes charged atoms in the water to move. This movement pushes the robot forward.(这些机器人并非像鱼类那样将水向后推,而是制造出一个微小的电场,从而促使水中的带电原子移动。这种移动会推动机器人向前移动)”可知,这些微型机器人通过利用电场来移动带电原子实现在水中向前移动。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“They even “communicate” through movement. For example, after measuring temperature, a robot might perform a small dance.(它们甚至通过动作来进行“交流”。例如,在完成温度测量后,机器人可能会做出一个简单的舞蹈动作)”可知,“机器人‘跳舞’”这个例子主要说明了机器人通过动作来传递信息。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有 两项为多余选项。 White noise is a special kind of sound. It is made by mixing all the different sound frequencies that humans can hear. Imagine playing every possible musical tone at the same time. ____36____ The word “white” is used because of the way white light works. White light is made up of many different colors of light mixed together. When light passes through a rainbow, these colors can be separated. ____37____ You can think of it as thousands of tones playing together. ____38____ It helps block out unwanted noise. For example, if you’re in a hotel and can hear voices from the next room, turning on a fan can help block out those sounds. The fan creates a steady sound similar to white noise. Why does this work? Our brains are good at focusing on one voice among a few. However, when too many people talk at once, the brain cannot separate single voices. The sound becomes a blur. ____39____ It covers up background noise and makes it harder for our brain to pick out individual sounds. Many people use white noise to sleep better. Constant background sound masks sudden noises like traffic or dogs barking. ____40____ Today, special machines and phone apps provide white noise easily. Some even offer similar sounds like pink or brown noise. Using these tools can help us enjoy a more relaxed and restful night’s sleep. A. The result is white noise. B. This prevents waking up during the night. C. This unique quality makes white noise very useful. D. White noise acts like a crowd of thousands talking. E. The louder the white noise is, the better its effect will be. F. Similarly, white noise contains all sound frequencies mixed together. G. Fortunately, many people find certain noises relaxing and pleasant. A 37. F 38. C 39. D 40. 【36题详解】 上文“It is made by mixing all the different sound frequencies that humans can hear. Imagine playing every possible musical tone at the same time.(它是由人类所能听到的所有不同声音频率混合而成的。想象一下,同时奏响所有可能的音调。)”描述白噪音的形成方式,空处总结这种混合的结果就是白噪音。A 选项“结果就是白噪音”承接上文对形成过程的描述。 【37题详解】 根据上文“The word “white” is used because of the way white light works. White light is made up of many different colors of light mixed together. When light passes through a rainbow, these colors can be separated.(之所以用“白色”来命名,是借鉴了白光的原理。白光是由许多不同颜色的光混合组成的。当光线穿过彩虹时,这些颜色就能被拆分出来。)”可知,本段讲白噪音命名和白光原理相似,用白光类比白噪音。F选项“同样地,白噪音包含所有混合在一起的声音频率”中Similarly表类比,完美衔接白光和白噪音的共性,符合语境。 【38题详解】 下文“It helps block out unwanted noise. For example, if you’re in a hotel and can hear voices from the next room, turning on a fan can help block out those sounds.(它能够屏蔽多余的杂音。比如,当你住在酒店,能听到隔壁房间的说话声时,打开风扇就能帮你隔绝这些声音。)”介绍白噪音的实际功能和作用举例。空处位于段首,起总起作用,引出白噪音的实用价值。C选项“这种独特的特质让白噪音非常实用”总领本段下文的用途介绍,适合做段首主题句。 【39题详解】 上文“However, when too many people talk at once, the brain cannot separate single voices. The sound becomes a blur.(然而,当太多人同时说话时,大脑就无法分辨出单个声音了,所有声音会混成一片嘈杂。)” At age eight, Miles Wu found a special joy in origami, the art of paper folding. But he was like a headache I couldn’t get rid of. While I loved silence and strict plans, Samuel was pure chaos. He constantly tapped his pen against the desk, sang songs during quiet study hours, and always borrowed my eraser only to lose it immediately. I viewed him as an obstacle that might hurt my good grades. Our trouble reached its peak during the annual Science Fair project. We were paired to build a model bridge for the physics fair. I insisted on following the book design exactly, believing being exact was the only way to succeed. Samuel, however, kept suggesting “creative improvements,” adding unnecessary curves and decorations. “It needs soul, not just math!” he insisted. I refused, thinking his ideas were silly. We barely spoke, working in cold silence. Two days before the deadline, disaster struck. My strictly calculated bridge broke under a small weight test. The central support snapped, and my perfect plan lay in ruins. Panic washed over me. All my hard work seemed wasted, and failure felt certain. I put my head in my hands, ready to give up. Suddenly, the constant pen-tapping stopped. Samuel didn’t say “I told you so.” Instead, he gently moved the broken pieces aside. He opened his notebook, showing sketches he had made secretly — designs inspired by nature, like spider webs and tree roots. “Your math is perfect,” he said quietly, “but it forgot about being flexible. Let’s try combining your numbers with my structure.” Looking at his determined eyes, I swallowed my pride. We had less than 48 hours. We decided to work together, mixing my logical thinking with his wild creativity. That night, the classroom became a busy workshop. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the competition, our bridge stood out among all the entries. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 That night, the classroom became a busy workshop. I carefully checked the numbers for every piece, while Samuel skillfully built the curved parts based on his nature drawings. His usual humming was now a soft song that kept us happy when we felt tired. Whenever I could not solve a hard problem, his creative ideas offered a surprising answer; whenever his design seemed too wild, my facts made it safe. The silence between us was no longer cold but comfortable, filled with our shared goal to build something great. By dawn, our bridge stood complete, a perfect mix of math and art. On the day of the competition, our bridge stood out among all the entries. While others were either just useful or just pretty, ours had both strength and beauty. The judges looked pleased as they put heavy weights on our model. It held firm, supporting far more than needed without breaking. When they announced us as the first-prize winners, Samuel and I gave each other a high-five. Holding the prize together, I finally understood what our teacher had seen. Samuel was not a problem to be fixed, but a partner who made me better. Our differences had not pulled us apart; instead, they had built a bridge between our hearts that would last forever. 词汇激活 行为类 ①解决问题:solve a problem/settle a problem ②支持:support/back 情绪类 ①疲惫的:tired/exhausted ②高兴的:pleased/delighted 【点睛】【高分句型 1】I carefully checked the numbers for every piece, while Samuel skillfully built the curved parts based on his nature drawings.(运用while连接的并列句,表示对比) 【高分句型 2】Our differences had not pulled us apart; instead, they had built a bridge between our hearts that would last forever.(运用了that引导的定语从句 ) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 合肥皖智高级中学2024级高二4月期中质量检测 英语 满分150分,时间120分钟。 What does the woman mean? Travel around the world. B Last summer, I was watering my backyard garden when I heard strange squeals (尖叫). C Being an expert birdwatcher is more than just a hobby; it might actually change your brain. Why Older Adults Should Walk Outside D Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have created some of the world’s smallest robots. White noise is a special kind of sound. At age eight, Miles Wu found a special joy in origami, the art of paper folding. Our headteacher hoped we’d get along. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $合肥皖智高级中学2024级高2 4月期中质量检测英语。 Text one, look, you forgot to send the invitation to Green. didn't you?
