Born in France in 1802, Victor Hugo was a novelist, poet and playwright and was part of the Romantic Movement. Regarded as one of France’s greatest writers, he is celebrated as the “Shakespeare of France”.
Hugo first found fame, as a poet, when he was about twenty years old. Less than ten years later, he published one of his best-known works, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. It was immediately a huge success and is now considered a key work of Romanticism. It remains one of his most popular works today.

Ugly is next to beauty, deformity is close to beauty, ugliness hides behind sublime, beauty and ugliness coexist, light and darkness coexist.

4.What about the Romanticism

4. What is Romanticism?
It’s a style and movement in art, music and literature in the late 18th and early 19th century, in which strong feelings, imagination and a return to nature were more important than reason, order and intellectual ideas(理性观点).

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) is Hugo’s first major romantic novel. With sudden change and contrast, it is a tale set in 15th-century France: Crod, the archdeacon (副主教) of Notre Dame, is a virtuous, snide man who loves before he hates the gypsy girl Esmeralda.Ugly face, kind-hearted bell ringer Quasimodo to save the girl gave his life.
The novel revealed the fake feelings of religion, praised the kindness, friendship and self-sacrifice of the lower working people, and reflected Hugo’s humanitarian thought.

Description about Quasimodo
Quasimodo was a typical example of the poor people of his time. He was abandoned by his parents at the gate of Notre Dame De Paris. He was a deformed(畸形的) child with a "geometric(几何图形的) face, a tetrahedral(四面体的) nose, a mouth shaped like a horseshoe, jagged(锯齿状的) teeth, one-eyed, a crooked(弯曲的) ear, and an ugly and honest voice." His character was highlighted by his exaggerated(夸张的) appearance.

Description about Esmeralda
Esmeralda is the perfect artistic image of truth, kindness and beauty created by Hugo. She was stolen from her prostitute mother by a gypsy(吉普赛人) when she was a child. After that, she lived as a vagabond(无业游民) and busked(街头艺人) for a living. Despite all the hardships and sufferings in the world, she still kept a kind, pure and helpful heart.

Some sentences about personal appearance.
When comparing and contrasting characters in a narrative, consider their appearance, actions, and motives. Appearance in literature usually has meaning; a character’s beauty and ugliness is not accidental, as it is in real life. It is also very important to consider how each character changes over time, that is, to compare each character to earlier versions of themselves.
