In the 1970s, there were about 300 Przewalski’s horses left in the world, because fewer and fewer baby horses were ____19____. Then three people from the Netherlands decided to do something to save Przewalski’s horses. They bought the horses from zoos and put them in special reserves.

Many people think koalas are a kind of bear, but that is not true. Koalas belong to the same animal group as kangaroos.
Koalas live in Australia. They live in forests that have many trees called eucalyptus (桉树). Eucalyptus leaves are the favourite food of koalas. They spend most of their time in eucalyptus trees. They even sleep in these trees! Koalas have bodies that make it easy for them to live in trees. Their front paws have five fingers each. Two of these fingers work like thumbs, so koalas can hold tight to branches. Their fingers also make it easy for koalas to pick eucalyptus leaves.
Koalas have thick, rough skin on the bottom of their paws. The rough skin keeps their paws from sliding on tree branches. The sharp claws on their back paws dig into tree bark, making it easier to climb. Strong thigh muscles give koalas the strength to climb tall trees.
Female koalas have one baby at a time. The baby is called a joey, and it is very tiny. When the joey is born, it climbs into a pouch over the mother’s stomach. It stays in the pouch for six months. The joey gets milk from its mother’s body and grows bigger and stronger. After the joey comes out of the pouch, it stays with its mother for six more months. Then it can live on its own.
Koalas do not get much energy from eating eucalyptus leaves. To save energy, they move slowly and sleep most of the time. A koala sleeps for about 20 hours a day!
30. What helps koalas keep from sliding on tree branches?
A. Their sharp back claws.
B. Their strong thigh muscles.
C. The thick rough skin on their paws.
D. The two thumb-like fingers on front paws.
31. When can a baby koala live on its own?
A. When it is six months old.
B. When it is one year old.
C. When it comes out of the pouch.
D. When it can eat eucalyptus leaves.
32. Which of the following is TRUE about koalas?
A. They are a kind of cute bear.

Green Street had a serious rubbish problem for many years. The public bins were always overflowing by Friday afternoon, and plastic bags and empty bottles would blow across the street on ____33____ days. Many residents complained about the mess, but no one did anything to change it. Then, a group of 10-year-old children from the local primary school decided to join a “Clean Street Club”. They held their first meeting in the community library and made a list of things they needed to do.
For their first activity, the children asked their parents for old gloves and metal tongs (夹子). These simple tools protected them, so they wouldn’t have to touch the dirty and sharp rubbish directly. Every Saturday morning, they met at the street corner and worked for two hours. They picked up every piece of rubbish they could find and sorted it carefully into different bins for paper, plastic and glass. ____34____, some people laughed at them, but when they saw how hard the children worked, they started to join in.
After three months of hard work, the children had collected over 500 kilograms of recyclable materials. They ____35____ all the things to a recycling centre in the next town. With the money they earned, they not only bought food and warm blankets for the stray dogs, but also built small wooden houses for them to sleep in during winter.
The children didn’t just clean the street. They also made colourful posters and put them up around the neighbourhood to teach people how to sort rubbish ____36____. Now, Green Street is the cleanest street in the whole town. Many other communities have also started their own clean-up clubs, inspired by the children from Green Street.

A. They are a kind of cute bear.
B. They live in forests with eucalyptus trees.
C. They spend most of their time on the ground.

The children didn’t just clean the street. They also made colourful posters and put them up around the neighbourhood to teach people how to sort rubbish ____36____. The Stained Book
Lucy loved reading more than anything else. Every Saturday morning, she went to the community library to borrow books. Last Saturday, she borrowed a beautiful picture book about wild animals. She was so excited that she read it while eating breakfast the next morning.
Suddenly, Lucy knocked over her glass of orange juice. The juice spilled all over the book, and the pages turned yellow and sticky. Lucy felt very worried. She thought the librarian would be angry with her. Her mother saw this and said, “It was an accident, but you should be honest and tell the librarian what happened.”
That afternoon, Lucy took the book back to the library. She walked up to the librarian, Ms. Wang, and said, “I’m sorry, Ms. Wang. I spilled juice on this book. I want to pay for a new one.” Ms. Wang looked at the book and smiled. “It’s okay, Lucy,” she said. “Accidents happen. I’m very proud of you for telling the truth.
