“Class, this is John Evans,” Mrs. Parmele announced, trying to sound enthusiastic. We saw a boy in worn-out clothes and shoes with holes and patches. John looked around and smiled, hoping somebody would smile back. Nobody did. He kept on smiling anyway.

When I was a grade 9 student, I often felt tired and stressful because of the busy schoolwork. Finally I lost my confidence and even hope in my study. Thanks to a famous writer whose words shine with the beauty of love and wisdom, I was saved from pain and hopelessness. Her name is Bi Shumin (毕淑敏).
When I was reading her books, I felt something special burning in my heart. When I was sad, she told me, “In an imperfect life, mud (泥土) and sand are actually the raw materials of life. You should learn to be strong.” Lifting my head, I felt a power I couldn’t name filled my heart. When I looked outside the window, birds were singing and everything looked so warm.
