Art has always been my favourite subject, as it allows me to do my favourite hobby. I still remember when I was young, I would always paint on books, pieces of paper and walls.
However, now at school, there are only two art lessons each week. It is far from enough for me. I notice that the 40 minutes for each lesson seem to pass by in a flash because I get completely lost in my artwork. Drawing seems to take me to another world, where time stands still and creativity never stops.
I love drawing so much that whenever I have time between classes, I find myself drawing something. I have spent so much time improving my skills that even my classmates are often amazed by my talent. I never boast about my abilities and am always thankful for their praise.
I especially enjoy drawing cartoons. This is the area where my creativity is always free. Letting my creativity run wild, I sometimes draw things that surprise even myself. I have drawn cartoons of some teachers I know. Most teachers speak highly of my cartoons.
I must say that I always feel good when I am drawing something. For me, drawing is a natural way to express myself. It simply allows me to follow my instincts (直觉) and lets my feelings guide my hand. Roadkill is a common sight on highways and sometimes in cities. It refers to animals being hit by vehicles (车辆). A study in 2023 measured, for the first time, the damage China’s fast-developing road network is having on animals in urban areas.
Previously, research in China had focused on roadkill in nature reserves. Li Zhongqiu and his team from Nanjing University’s School of Life Sciences looked at the problem in cities, where roadkill could have an ever tiger impact.
They chose Nanjing, with over 9,700 kilometers of paved roads (铺好的路), as the study subject. Nine roads, including three national highways, totaling over 224 kilometers, were watched every two weeks for a year.
The team recorded a total of 293 individual (单独的) roadkill cases. Birds accounted for nearly half a total, making them the most susceptible group to roadkill. Cats, dogs and blackbirds were the three most commonly killed animals.
“This may be due to the large number of homeless cats and dogs in urban areas,” Li said. “Abandoned pets are more likely to wander into traffic.” Also, there are many blackbirds in East China that are attracted onto roads by insects like flies, leading to more accidents.
Roadkill incidents (事件) happen more often in November and January, the team found. This may be because, for some warm-blooded animals, food is harder to find at this time, so they have to go out and search for food more.
“Roadkill has resulted in the decline (下降) of urban animal populations and must be taken seriously,” Li said. The researchers also call on policymakers to put forward related traffic regulations (条例) and animal protection rules, such as speed limits and traffic controls.
1. What is the focus of the study made by Li Zhongqiu and his team?
A. Roadkill in urban areas. B. Roadkill in nature reserves.
C. Animal populations in cities. D. Damage caused by building highways.
2. What does the underlined word “susceptible” in Paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Unaffected. B. Acceptable. C. Widely seen. D. Easily influenced.
3. Why are blackbirds a common roadkill animal in China?
A. Because they like to wander into traffic.
B. Because they have to search for food on roads.
C. Because they cannot fly high enough in the sky.
D. Because they are often attracted onto roads by insects.
4. What do the researchers suggest doing to reduce roadkill in cities?
A. Improving road conditions in cities.
B. Sending homeless animals back to nature reserves.
C. Setting speed limits and controlling traffic in cities.
D. Increasing the number of traffic lights in rural areas.
5. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Study shows the impact of roadkill B. Rising concerns for nature reserves
C. Urban animal populations grow bigger D. Increased awareness for homeless animals

Sia Godika was 13 when she saw the barefoot (赤脚的) children of construction workers at a building site near her house. “They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.” __1__________ “I looked at my own feet and thought, ‘Wow, I’m 13 years old. Those children are seven or eight.’” She opened her closet doors and saw shoes. She wore many of them only a few times and they looked very new. She put them into a big box and hurried to give them all away to the children she saw at the building site.
Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia set up Sole Warriors, a charity aiming to provide shoes for those in need. Sia’s dream is: “ __2__________ ” The idea started in a dinner conversation with her parents and it quickly grew. After she posted the idea online, many people showed their willingness to help her. For months, Sia was busy with her new project. “I was up till 2:00 a.m. reading emails to see how and where we could raise money or get shoes.”
__3__________ That need, says Sia, is endless. In a world where the poorest half of the population owns just two per cent of the wealth, about 300 million people can’t pay for shoes. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, more than 90 percent end up in landfills. __4__________ Today that number stands at around 28,000 across several countries, including the USA, China and Liberia.
__5__________ The award is one of the most important honours a young person can receive for social action or volunteer work. But her work isn’t done. She says, “Our dream has always been to touch a million feet.”

F. In its first volunteer drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes.

1. 根据前文提到西亚看到赤脚儿童“They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.(他们只是在那个建筑工地上走来走去,就像这是他们的日常练习一样。)以及后文描述她“I looked at my own feet and thought, ‘Wow, I’m 13 years old. Those children are seven or eight.’(我看着自己的脚,心想,‘哇,我13岁了。那些孩子七八岁。)”可知,空格处需要一个句子来连接她看到赤脚孩子时的心理活动和随后的行动。B选项“At that moment, Sia felt sorry for the children.(那一刻,西亚为孩子们感到难过。)”正好承接上文看到赤脚孩子的场景,并引出下文她决定送鞋子的举动。故答案为B。
2. 根据前文“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia set up Sole Warriors, a charity aiming to provide shoes for those in need. Sia’s dream is: …(同年晚些时候,在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下,西亚创立了‘鞋履战士’慈善组织,旨在为有需要的人提供鞋子。西亚的梦想是:‘……’)”以及后文“The idea started in a dinner conversation with her parents and it quickly grew. After she posted the idea online, many people showed their willingness to help her.(这个想法始于她与父母的一次晚餐谈话,并迅速发展起来。在她将这个想法发布到网上后,许多人都表示愿意帮助她。)” 空格处应该是西亚的梦想或该机构的口号。A选项“Give a pair of shoes, save a mind.(给一双鞋,拯救一颗心。)”
3. 根据前文“For months, Sia was busy with her new project. “I was up till 2:00 a.m. reading emails to see how and where we could raise money or get shoes.”(几个月来,西亚一直忙于她的新项目。‘我一直读邮件到凌晨2点,想看看我们如何以及在哪里筹集资金或买鞋。’)”以及后文“That need, says Sia, is endless. In a world where the poorest half of the population owns just two per cent of the wealth, about 300 million people can’t pay for shoes.(西亚表示,这种需求是无穷无尽的。在一个最贫穷的人口占一半、却拥有全球财富仅2%的世界里,大约有3亿人买不起鞋子。)”可知,空格处应该描述她项目初期的成果。F选项“In its first volunteer drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes.(在第一次志愿者活动中,Sole Warriors收集并分发了700双鞋。)”
4. 根据前文“Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, more than 90 percent end up in landfills.(在每年生产的近240亿双鞋中,90%以上最终被填埋。)”以及后文“Today that number stands at around 28,000 across several countries, including the USA, China and Liberia.(目前,这一数字在包括美国、中国和利比里亚在内的多个国家约为2.8万。)” G选项“Now the organization gives shoes away to people in need.(现在该组织向有需要的人分发鞋子。)”
5. 根据前文“Today that number stands at around 28,000 across several countries, including the USA, China and Liberia.(目前,这一数字在包括美国、中国和利比里亚在内的多个国家约为2.8万。)”以及后文“The award is one of the most important honours a young person can receive for social action or volunteer work.(该奖项是年轻人在社会行动或志愿服务方面所能获得的最重要荣誉之一。)” C选项“In 2021, Sia was given a famous award.(2021年,西亚获得了著名奖项。)直接引出了后文对该奖项意义的描述。故答案为C。

【答案】
A greener world, a better life
Everyone knows that nature is our greatest treasure. Coal and oil play an important role in our daily life. We use them to produce electricity and power cars. Without them, modern life would be impossible.
However, we face serious problems. These natural resources are running out day by day. Also, burning coal and oil causes air pollution, which harms our health and the environment.
To solve this problem, we should develop and use new energy, such as solar and wind power. It is clean and never runs out. Besides, we can save energy in small ways, like turning off lights when leaving rooms. Small actions can make a big difference. Let’s work together to build a greener world and enjoy a better life.

The result is always a happy one, leaving me with a sense of achievement that no other subject can match.
