Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match — no matter how specialized.
Meatopia
This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of legally sourced meat products, from juicy burgers to tender steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery demonstrations, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
The National Honey Show
If you have a sweet tooth, then it could be that the National Honey Show, which started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind, is the place for you to be. This three-day event attracts many local entries who showcase their sweet golden honey, some of which is sold globally.
The Orange Sauce Festival
Have you heard about a festival that is devoted only to orange sauce? Held in Cumbria, this sweet, fragrant festival has been running for 3 years. What attracts people most is a competition to find the best homemade orange sauce. There are thousands of participants from over 30 different countries across the globe, bringing their local snacks to share here.
The Ginger and Spice Festival
If you’d prefer something with a little more kick to it, then you could attend The Ginger and Spice Festival held in Market Drayton. Unlike other food festivals, it celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of traditional spices from mild to hot.

C. Both of them have a long history. D. Both of them originated from London.

During the summer holiday, visiting museums has become a new fashion, with several famous museums being considered as “must-visit” places by visitors. Tourists were seen queuing for long hours in front of museums and getting entrance ticket became more challenging.
According to media reports, the Henan Museum received more than 12,000 visitors in the summer of 2025, nearly double that of the same period in 2021. The Hangzhou Museum recorded 12,800 visitors on July 16, 2025, setting a new daily attendance record. In response to the growing need, 46 museums in Beijing canceled their Monday closures and remained open daily until August 31, 2025.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the “museum fever” can be caused by various factors, including the public’s increasing enthusiasm for traditional Chinese culture, the increasing market for youth educational tours and summer camps, as well as the continuous development of museums.
Lin Liugen, the director of the Institute of Archaeology at Zhejiang University, said the “museum craze” reflects a deep connection between the public and traditional culture. As the economy and society progress, more people want to have a deeper understanding of China’s rich culture and history.
Summer camps, family trips and educational tours have been the primary forms of tourism in the summer of 2025, with museum visits becoming a must-do activity for travelers. Besides, the application of new technologies has made cultural relics (文物) easier to reach. For instance, 3D projection technology breathes life into those relics, enabling them to come alive before visitors’ eyes. AR glasses offer a special experience by allowing visitors to enjoy relics through voice commands and visual recognition. Additionally, an advanced intelligent lighting system helps display relics more clearly and vividly.
Liu Yanchang, the curator (馆长) of the Shandong Museum, said “In the future, more and more people will take visiting museums as a kind of habit and lifestyle.” On how to better meet museumgoers’ needs, Sun Mingli, deputy curator of the Suzhou Museum, says that popular museums may consider using hourly booking systems or hosting “cloud exhibitions” to improve the visitor experience.

Exercise is like medicine for the heart, and just like taking medicine, you need the right amount for it to be effective. But a recent study suggests that it might not be the same for everyone. Researchers found that men need more exercise than women to achieve the same reduction in their risk of heart disease.
A research team studied over 85,000 adults aged 37 to 73 in the UK. Each participant wore a device to measure their body movements and activity levels for seven days. Then the researchers tracked the participants’ health outcomes for about eight years. The results showed that women who did 4 hours of active exercise per week had around a 30% lower risk of heart disease. Men, however, needed about 8 hours of the same kind of activity to see a similar reduction.
There are clear biological reasons that can partly help explain these differences. The main reason is that women naturally have a higher level of a certain hormone (荷尔蒙), a chemical which helps the body burn more fat for energy during long exercise periods and keeps blood vessels (血管) healthy. Besides, women tend to have more efficient muscle fibers. So they are good at steady and sustained activities without feeling tired easily, like jogging and cycling.
While the study used accurate, device-based data, it still has limits. Activities were only tracked for one week, and the volunteers were from a group that are in better health condition than the average population. Still, these results highlight an important point: current exercise guidelines, which are the same for men and women, might need to be reconsidered. Both men and women clearly benefit from regular physical activities. That’s not in question. Men just need a few extra minutes each week to get the same heart protection as women.
8. How much weekly exercise do men need for equal heart benefits?
A. Slightly less than women’s. B. Almost the same as women’s.
C. Nearly 30% more than women’s. D. About twice as much as women’s.
9. Which is the key biological factor helping women in exercise?
A. Longer muscle fibers. B. More certain chemical.
C. Stronger blood vessels. D. Quicker fat-burning system.
10. What does the underlined word “sustained” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Long-lasting. B. High-speed. C. Competitive. D. Exciting.
11. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. The study has an unreliable database.
B. The tracking period of the study is sufficient.
C. Current exercise guidelines may be improper.
D. Women benefit more from exercise than men.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍研究发现男性需比女性进行更多运动才能降低同等心脏病风险,并分析原因及研究局限与启示。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The results showed that women who did 4 hours of active exercise per week had around a 30% lower risk of heart disease. Men, however, needed about 8 hours of the same kind of activity to see a similar reduction.(结果显示,每周进行4小时积极运动的女性,患心脏病的风险降低了约30%。然而,男性需要进行大约8小时的同等活动才能看到类似的风险降低效果)”可知,男性每周需要的运动时长约为女性的两倍,才能获得同等的心脏健康益处。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The main reason is that women naturally have a higher level of a certain hormone (荷尔蒙), a chemical which helps the body burn more fat for energy during long exercise periods and keeps blood vessels (血管) healthy.(主要原因是女性天生含有更高水平的某种荷尔蒙,这种化学物质有助于身体在长时间运动中燃烧更多脂肪供能,并保持血管健康)”可知,帮助女性在运动中获益的关键生理因素是体内某种特定化学物质(荷尔蒙)含量更高。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Besides, women tend to have more efficient muscle fibers. So they are good at steady and sustained activities without feeling tired easily, like jogging and cycling.(此外,女性往往拥有更高效的肌肉纤维。因此,她们擅长稳定且sustained活动,不易感到疲劳,比如慢跑和骑自行车)”可知,sustained与steady(稳定的)并列,且结合“不易感到疲劳”、“慢跑、骑自行车”等语境,可推测其意为“持久的”,与long-lasting同义。故选A项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Still, these results highlight an important point: current exercise guidelines, which are the same for men and women, might need to be reconsidered.(尽管如此,这些结果强调了一个重要观点:目前男女通用的运动指南可能需要重新考虑)”可推断,当前的运动指南可能是不合适的,因为它没有考虑到男女运动获益的差异。故选C项。
D
Australia’s wildfires tore through Australia this year (and many other years), burning down about 104,000 square kilometers of bushes, rainforests, and national parks as well as killing an estimate of more than a billion wild animals. Scientists fear some of the continent’s unique and colorful species may become extinct. Dr Alexandra Carthey from Macquarie University came up with the idea of cardboard homes for wildlife, giving them a fighting chance of survival after wildfires.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) ran an innovation challenge in order to restore species and landscapes, help them adapt to a changing climate and regenerate Australia after burning flames spread across much of the habitat. Funding from WWF will enable field trials of this unique idea of cardboard habitats for wildlife.
“Bushfires destroy vegetation where small animals hide,” Carthey told WWF. “Raptors (猛禽) arrive within minutes after a fire, while foxes can travel many kilometres towards fires because they know the hunting will be excellent. They come in and kill our native animals who almost have no place to hide on a burnt landscape.”
The cardboard shelters are six-sided pyramids, 60cm wide on each side and 60cm tall. They can be flat-packed, allowing for easy transportation from the factory to the wilderness. They have been designed as a safe house for wildlife such as possums, bush rats and reptiles, as well as smaller creatures such as insects. These shelters are biodegradable, with holes that allow light in so that vegetation can regenerate and eventually take over the site.
While environmentalists have always placed makeshift shelters in the form of logs and chicken wire structures, the solutions involve dragging heavy things around, damaging fire grounds and preventing bush regeneration. This initiative could also be used in South Africa, where many bird species are badly affected by fires.
12. What is a purpose of WWF’s innovation challenge in Australia?
A. To increase wildlife population.
B. To prevent wildfires from happening.
C. To protect natural habitats from being taken up.
D. To raise the public’s awareness about climate change.
13. How might wildfires affect small animals according to Carthey?
A. They make their habitats too hot to live in.
B. They force them to travel far to find food.
C. They expose them to hunting animals.
D. They take their lives with burning flames.
14. What is a problem with traditional makeshift shelters?
A. They have a short life.
B. They are non-biodegradable.
C. They look too obvious in the wild.
D. They are inconvenient to carry around.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Innovative Wildlife Rescue Efforts.
B. Australian Lifesaving Cardboard Homes.
C. Wildlife Suffering From Wildfires in Australia.
D. Damages Caused by the Unprecedented Wildfires.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

4. According to the text, what is one of the reasons for the increase of museum visits?
A. The public prefer traditional Chinese culture to modern culture.
B. The museums remain open daily during the summer holiday.
C. The public see visiting museums as a good way to educate youth.
D. The museums are the best places to understand China’s history.
5. Why are new technologies applied in museums now?
