Pang Zhongwang, a 26-year-old PhD candidate in precision instruments at Tsinghua University, has recently been appointed as a think-tank expert and culture-tourism ambassador for his hometown Wuqiao County, Hebei Province. This appointment has returned him to the public spotlight years after his initial fame.
Pang first gained national attention in 2017 when he scored an impressive 684/750 in the gaokao despite significant family challenges. His father lives with schizophrenia while his mother had lower limb disability. His outstanding performance earned him admission to the prestigious Tsinghua University.
Despite media portrayals of his financial struggles, Pang notably declined financial assistance from entrepreneurs. He’s now excelling in his PhD program, having published several papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Tragically, Pang’s mother, who had the greatest influence on his life, passed away in 2020 at 48. “I found it hard to express my feelings to my mother when she was alive,” Pang recalled. “I might have told her, ‘Look, I’m doing pretty well.’”
From childhood, Pang shouldered household responsibilities and cared for his parents. His grandparents provided primary financial support. Sometimes he borrowed from neighbors for his mother’s medical expenses. Before the gaokao, while classmates focused solely on studies, Pang collected recyclables to generate family income.
His mother once told media: “This child is my greatest hope. I never studied, so I deeply respect educated people. I just urged him to study hard.” Pang credits his optimism to his mother’s teachings. “She always encouraged looking forward. She smiled daily, so why should I dwell on sadness?”
His recent speech declaration —“Our generation’s mission is to serve the country through scientific research” — became a social media sensation. Online comments praise him as an inspiration for disadvantaged youth.
4. What is the main reason for which Pang regained media attention recently?
A. He has published groundbreaking research. B. He has new responsibilities for his hometown.
C. He gave a viral speech at Tsinghua University. D. He started a charity for disadvantaged youth.
5. How did Pang help support his family in his middle school?
A. By getting financial aid from entrepreneurs. B. By relying on his grandparents’ support.
C. By borrowing money from neighbors. D. By collecting garbage to earn money.
6. Which quality does Pang credit to his mother’s teaching?
A. Independence B. Intelligence C. Optimism D. Persistence
7. What can be reasonably inferred from the passage about Pang Zhongwang?
A. His mother’s attitude played a key role in shaping his personality.
B. He accepted help from entrepreneurs for his education at Tsinghua.
C. He stopped taking care of his family after he started his PhD program.
D. His recent appointment marked his first time to receive public attention.

Recycling lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries to recover their critical metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt has significantly lower environmental impacts than mining raw metals, according to a new Stanford University life cycle analysis published in Nature Communications.
The study quantifies the environmental footprint of this recycling process, and finds it gives off less than half the greenhouse gases (GHGs) of conventional mining and uses about one-fourth of the water and energy of mining new metals. The environmental benefits are even greater for the scrap (废料) stream, which accounted for about 90% of the recycled supply studied.
Battery recycling’s environmental impacts depend heavily on the processing facility’s location and electricity source. “A battery recycling plant in regions that rely heavily on electricity generated by burning coal would see a reduced climate advantage,” said Samantha Bunk e, one of the study’s three lead investigators. “On the other hand, freshwater shortages in regions with cleaner electricity are a great concern,” added Bunk e. Most of the study’s data for battery recycling came from Redwood Materials in Nevada — North America’s largest industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility — which benefits from the western U.S.’s cleaner energy mix.
Redwood, which has since broken ground on a new facility in South Carolina, was one of the first to apply the lessons of this project to their own operations and environmental footprint. Its founder, JB Straubel said that the insights of this research have played a key role in refining Redwood’s battery recycling processes. “Thanks to the researchers’ observations, we have further reduced our environmental footprint,” he noted.
While the U.S. now recycles about 50% of available lithium-ion batteries, it has successfully recycled 99% of lead-acid batteries for decades. “Given that used lithium-ion batteries contain materials with up to 10 times higher economic value, the opportunity is significant,” senior author William Tarpeh said. “For a future with a greatly increased supply of used batteries, we need to design and prepare a recycling system today from collection to processing back into new batteries with minimal environmental impact,” he added. “Hopefully, battery producers will consider how to make their batteries more recyclable in their future plans, too.”
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The effectiveness of energy use.
B. Methods of conducting the study.
C. The complexity of the recycling process.
D. Advantages of recycling lithium-ion batteries.
9. Why is Redwood Materials mentioned?
A. To show the key role of battery industries.
B. To highlight its reduced climate advantage.
C. To illustrate the practical use of the research.
D. To criticize its lasting environmental footprint.
10. What does the underlined word “refining” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Shaking. B. Bettering. C. Starting. D. Limiting.
11. What is Tarpeh’s suggestion for battery producers?
A. Improve their recycling system.
B. Limit the use of lead-acid batteries.
C. Focus on their processing cost.
D. Prioritize recyclability in their designs.

Urban agriculture, the practice of farming within the limits of a city, is becoming increasingly popular worldwide and is considered a way to make cities and urban food systems more sustainable. Despite strong evidence of the social and nutritional benefits of urban agriculture, its carbon footprint remains understudied.
Most previously published studies have focused on high-tech, energy-intensive forms of urban agriculture —such as vertical (垂直的) farms and rooftop greenhouses. The new study aimed to fill some of the knowledge gaps by comparing the carbon footprints of food produced at low-tech urban agriculture sites to conventional crops.
The researchers calculated the greenhouse gas emissions (排放) associated with on-farm materials and activities over the lifetime of the farm. The emissions, expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents per serving of food, were then compared to foods raised by conventional methods.
Farmers and gardeners at urban agriculture sites across the world were employed to use daily diary entries to take down inputs—the materials used to construct farms and cultivate crops—and harvests from their food-growing sites throughout the 2019 season.
“By assessing actual inputs and outputs on urban agriculture sites, we were able to determine climate change impacts to each serving of produce,” says study co-lead author Benjamin Goldstein, assistant professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability. On average, food produced through urban agriculture released 0.42 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents per serving, six times higher than the 0.07 kg CO2e per serving of conventionally grow n produce.
It’s also found that most of the climate impacts at urban farms are driven by the infrastructure (基础设施), such as the raised beds in which food is grown, or pathways between plots. “These farms typically only operate for a few years, so the greenhouse gases used to produce those materials are not used effectively. Conventional agriculture, instead, is very efficient and hard to compete with”, Goldstein says. For example, conventional farms often grow a single crop with the help of pesticides and fertilizers, resulting in larger harvests and a reduced carbon footprint when compared to urban farms, he says.
12. What is a benefit of urban agriculture?
A. Sustainable food supply. B. High food output.
C. Effective energy conservation. D. Low carbon footprint.
13. How is the research data collected?
A. By accessing online database. B. By examining previous studies.
C. By conducting personal interviews. D. By recording information every day.
14. What could be done to reduce carbon footprint according to Goldstein?
A. Increase varieties of crops. B. Extend infrastructure lifetimes.
C. Promote rooftop greenhouses. D. Use modern agriculture facilities.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The benefits of traditional crops. B. The popularity of urban agriculture.
C. The strategies to fight global warming. D. The carbon footprint of urban farm produce.

Research presented suggests that people who eat slowly are less likely than speed-eaters to become overweight or to develop metabolic syndrome (代谢综合征), which involves a variety of conditions associated with stroke, heart disease and diabetes. ___16___
In 2008, Japanese researchers, led by Hiroshima University cardiologist Dr Takayuki Yamaji, hired over 1,000 healthy Japanese adults. ___17___ At the same time, the researchers tracked these adults’ health for the next five years.
Eighty-four people were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome during those five years, with a clear connection between eating speed and development of the disease. The incidence rate was 11.6% among fast eaters, 6.5% among normal eaters and just 2.3% among slow eaters. ___18___ Moreover, they had more chance to suffer from higher blood sugar.
___19___ In reality, a lot of research has shown that eating fast is associated with weight gain and other health issues. “You probably do eat more because you are eating so quickly. You really don’t have any idea of what you’ve eaten,” says American Heart Association spokesperson Dr Nieca Goldberg. “When you eat slowly, you are much more aware of your eating. You are chewing your food properly and you’re also slowing down digestion.”
Goldberg says that it should take at least 30 minutes to eat a meal. ___20___ Goldberg suggests eating with a friend, cutting your food into smaller pieces, chewing more, taking deep breaths and setting your fork down between bites.
A. Doing so also helps you feel full.
B. Those results aren’t all that surprising.
C. Eat in a situation where it’s beneficial to eating.
D. The speedy eaters were also more likely to weigh more.
E. This shows that when it comes to eating, slow and steady wins the race.
F. So, if you tend to eat fast, you’ll likely need to train yourself to slow down.
G. They asked the adults to characterize their eating speed — slow, normal or fast.

One sunny afternoon, 8-year-old Leo was running after a colorful butterfly around the neighborhood. He laughed as he ran faster, his eyes fixed on the moving wings. He was so caught up in the game that he didn’t notice where he was going. Near the neighbor’s yard, he tripped over a small stone and crashed right into Mrs. Lee’s potted sunflowers — her favorite ones.
The pot broke into pieces, and soil spread all over the path. Leo froze, his laughter gone in a second. Mrs. Lee was always so nice to him — she’d even given him a tiny sunflower plant last spring. He knelt down and tried to put the flowers and soil back into the broken pot, but only made it worse and got his hands all dirty.
He was so scared he’d ruined her hard work that he stepped back, his heart beating fast. He looked at her door, half hoping she hadn’t seen it and half wishing she would come out so he could say sorry right away. However, scared of what Mrs. Lee might say, he turned and ran home as fast as he could. When he pushed open the door, he didn’t even take off his shoes — he just ran to his room and sat on the bed, hands covering his face.
After a few minutes, his mom Clara knocked softly on his door. “Leo? You’re home early, and you ran in so fast. Are you okay?” She eased the door open and saw him sitting with his head down. She walked over and sat next to him, putting a hand on his back. “You look upset. What’s wrong, sweetie?” she asked.
Leo took a deep breath and then told his mom what had happened with tears in his eyes. His mom hugged him gently and said, “It’s okay to make mistakes, but we need to take responsibility.” She took out a new pot and some fresh soil, and then held Leo’s hand. “Let’s go and say sorry and fix it together.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Leo thought for a while and nodded.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. D

【答案】A Memorable Experience
Last week was the “Chinese Traditional Culture Experience Week” of our school, when our class held a kite-making and flying activity.
During the activity, the teacher first introduced the history of kites, explaining their cultural significance. Then we started making our own kites using bamboo sticks and colorful paper. We designed various patterns, such as dragons and birds, to decorate our kites. Finally, we went to the school playground to fly them. Watching the kites soar into the sky filled us with excitement and pride.
This experience was both fun and meaningful. It not only improved our hands-on skills but also deepened our appreciation for Chinese traditions. I hope more activities like this can be organized in the future!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

To his surprise, Mrs. Lee’s face softened into a smile.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Leo thought for a while and nodded. They walked to Mrs. Lee’s gate together, with the new pot pressed against Leo’s side. When they arrived, Mrs. Lee was already outside, sweeping the spilled soil into a small pile. When she saw Leo, her eyes widened, but before she could speak, he stepped forward and said with his head down, “I broke your pot. It was an accident. I brought a new pot to help plant your sunflowers again, if you’ll let me.” He looked up, worried she’d be angry.
To his surprise, Mrs. Lee’s face softened into a smile. “Of course you can, Leo, I’m proud of you for telling the truth — that’s the hardest part.” Together, the three of them carefully lifted the sunflowers into the new pot. Leo patted the soil gently, while Clara helped straighten the plant. Mrs. Lee then fetched her green watering can and poured the cold water gently around the roots. When they finished, Mrs. Lee picked a small sunflower and gave it to Leo. “This is for being honest and responsible,” she said.
