I saw a street sweeper frequently around our neighborhood in London. For the most part he seemed discontented, whispering complaints as he cleaned trash. His anger was, at times, a little frightening. I’d observe him cautiously, and I would often cross the road to escape his verbal abuse. Glancing at him the wrong way could set him off, so I’d always try not to look directly at him if we crossed paths.
One day, after noticing — and avoiding — him for a year, I saw him smiling and nodding agreeably to himself. But he was also doing something else. He was feeding coins into a parking meter, apparently to prevent owners of parked cars whose payments had run out from getting fined. Over the next couple of years, I saw him doing this again and again. There was nothing performative about his actions. Yet there was a surprising certainty and inborn goodness about his actions that others might well dismiss. In my mind, it was just pure kindness.
A few weeks ago I was at the supermarket in need of a trolley (手推车). To unlock one, a $1 or $2 coin was needed but I’ve never got change because who carries coins anymore? I was swearing at the trolley using words that would embarrass a convention of London street sweepers. I must have looked slightly mad, abusing the trolley. A young woman appeared and handed me a $2 coin.
“I can’t possibly,” I said. “How can I repay you?”
“You don’t need to. Just give it to the next person you see who needs it. Someone else gave it to me when I needed a trolley.”
The kindness of perfect strangers can really stop you in your tracks sometimes.
4 Which best explains the phrase “set him off” in paragraph 1?
A. Cause him to lose his temper. B. Encourage him to help others.
C. Remind him to clean the rubbish. D. Make him leave the neighborhood.
5. What was the street sweeper’s intention in putting money into the parking meters?
A. To gain attention from the public. B. To help people avoid parking tickets.
C. To earn extra money from the device. D. To avoid getting in trouble with his boss.
6. How did the author feel about needing a coin for the trolley?
A. Curious. B. Disappointed. C. Frustrated. D. Grateful.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Bitterness of Urban Life B. Unspoken Trust of Strangers
C. Subtle Power of Small Gestures D. Politeness in Everyday Interactions
C
Fred Ritchin has been thinking about the future of the photograph for nearly half a century. He started to notice changes to the medium in 1982, working as a picture editor at The New York Times magazine; in 1984 he wrote an article for the magazine, “Photography’s New Bag of Tricks”, about the consequences of digital editing technology in contemporary photojournalism. In the decades since, he’s witnessed the shift from the early days of digital photo editing to AI imagery, in which amateur and professional users alike can use digital services to instantly generate realistic visuals.
As AI images become increasingly common, Ritchin feels people need to find new ways to confirm that they can believe what they see. Of course, AI imagery hasn’t appeared out of thin air. In the early days of digital editing, National Geographic was criticized for digitally moving the Pyramids closer together for its February 1982 cover image. Today National Geographic photographers are required to shoot in RAW format — a setting that produces unprocessed images — and the magazine has a strict policy against photo manipulation (篡改).
Ritchin’s view is that editors, publishers, and photojournalists should respond to the challenges of AI by setting clear standards; media and camera companies have begun developing options to automatically embed (嵌入) metadata and watermarks in photographs to show when an image was taken and whether it’s been manipulated via digital editing or AI alterations. While Ritchin doesn’t call for rejecting AI entirely, he hopes to reinvent the unique power that photography once held in our personal and political lives.
Ritchin reflects on a powerful photo that “helped to bring the war to a close faster and a lot of people’s lives were not lost”. He describes this as “a big deal”, but notes that today, people might see such an image and think, “Some 14-year-old in a garage somewhere could have made that.”
8. What change in photography has Fred Ritchin observed over the years?
A. The rise of AI and digital techniques in photography.
B. The increasing accessibility of photo manipulation tools.
C. The evolution from traditional to digital editing techniques.
D. The combination of technology and creativity in photography.
9. What does the underlined phrase “out of thin air” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. In the absence of a specific origin. B. Without strong supporting evidence.
C. From insufficient research foundations. D. Through an accidental process.
10. What can we learn about Ritchin’s view on the impact of AI?
A. Digital tools enable the instant creation of realistic visuals.
B. Spread of AI imagery strengthens trust in authenticity.
C. Journalism should limit its reliance on AI-driven content.
D. Setting firm standards is key to maintaining photo credibility.
11. Why does Ritchin mention the war-ending photo?
A. To highlight the role of photography in shaping history.
B. To express concern about photography losing its impact in the AI era.
C. To illustrate the power of war photography in influencing public opinion.
D. To demonstrate how AI technology challenges traditional photojournalism.
D
The rock group Counting Crows were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows can indeed count, according to a recent research publication. Results show crows have counting capacities near those of human toddlers (学步期儿童), says Diana Liao, a researcher in neurobiology at the University of Tübingen. “We think this is the first time this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.
Crows don’t appear to be capable of symbolic counting, in which numbers are associated with a particular symbol. This skill is still thought to be unique to humans. Instead, the birds are able to count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发声) they produce to correspond to associated cues — just like young children who have yet to master symbolic counting often do. Scientists have long suspected that some nonhuman species might also have the ability to count by controlling the number of their vocalizations but lacked evidence.
In the new study, Liao and her colleagues ran experiments with three carrion crows in a carefully controlled laboratory setting. They presented the birds with randomly ordered cues, four of which were visual — colored Arabic numbers appearing on a touch screen — and four of which were sound-based, including a guitar tone and a drumroll. The birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each cue. If they got it right, they received a worm. If not, they received a time-out. When the birds made errors, they tended to make errors close to the target number — a phenomenon referred to as the numerical distance effect. After receiving 166 to 189 training sessions, all the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations at a level higher than chance.
Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist, says the new paper is “excellent”. Counting abilities in birds and mammals represent “a spectacular case of convergent brain evolution (趋同脑进化) where both groups came up with virtually the same solution to cognitive challenges posed by life on Earth. As a result, crows learn, remember, plan, act and make mistakes as toddlers do.”
12. What do the results of the research show about crows?
A. Crows use vocalizations to communicate.
B. Crows are known for forming rock bands.
C. Crows are able to distinguish different quantities.
D. Crows rely on visual signals to interpret surroundings.
13. How did Liao and her team conduct the experiment with crows?
A. By observing crows in the wild.
B. By teaching crows to recognize numbers.
C. By comparing crows’ behavior to that of toddlers.
D By training crows through visual and sound clues.
14. What can be inferred from Onur Güntürkün’s explanation?
A. Crows show advanced cognitive abilities like other intelligent animals.
B. Birds and mammals found varied ways to address cognitive challenges.
C. Crows developed their counting skills by interacting with other species.
D. Birds and mammals developed similar counting abilities through evolution.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The influence of crows on popular culture is discussed.
B. Crows are the first non-human species proven to count.
C. Research on crows reveals insights into animal intelligence.
D. Exploring animal intelligence is vital for understanding behavior.

A recent global study, which surveyed 10,000 young people from 10 countries, showed that nearly 60 percent of them were extremely worried about the future state of the planet. Nearly half of the respondents were affected by such anxiety daily, and three-quarters agreed that “the future is frightening”. Clearly, climate change is not just a threat to the environment that we inhabit. ____16____
Psychologists have categorized these feelings of grief, distress, and worry about the current climate emergency under the label of “eco-anxiety”. ____17____ Eco-anxiety doesn’t just affect young people. It also impacts researchers and those with limited financial resources across the globe.
In 2024, eco-anxiety rises to become one of the leading causes of mental health problems. ____18____ Scientists estimate that the world is likely to go beyond safe levels of temperature rise above pre-industrial levels by 2027. In recent years, wildfires have torn through Canada and Greece, and floods have destroyed regions in Pakistan that are home to nearly 33 million people.
____19____ Caroline Hickman, a researcher on eco-anxiety from the University of Bath, warns that the feelings of worry, sorrow and despair associated with eco-anxiety should not be labeled as a medical condition. After all, anyone experiencing these emotions is displaying entirely natural and understandable reactions to the climate crisis. Her suggestion? Use eco-anxiety as a tool for good — as an emotion that can motivate people to act in protection of our planet.
This is why more people are expected to join the fight for climate justice and seek jobs that prioritize environmental sustainability. Campaigners will put increased pressure on fossil fuel industries and the governments that fund them to rapidly phase out the usage of polluting coal, oil, and gas. ____20____ We will deal with it by taking action.
A. The reasons are obvious.
B. Concerns about mental health are growing worldwide.
C. It also poses a very real threat to our emotional well-being.
D. Eco-anxiety is not something we will defeat with treatment.
E. Hopefully, eco-anxiety will inspire more discussions about future solutions.
F. It is defined as heightened emotional and mental distress due to climate change.
G. Fortunately, greater levels of eco-anxiety will offer a way to address the climate crisis head-on.

During the holiday season, the classroom felt unusually quiet, missing the usual noise of students talking and laughing. The festive spirit seemed to have taken a break, leaving behind an air of stillness.
Mia, a shy and reserved girl, sat at her desk, staring out the window, lost in thought. Her heart was heavy with sadness and regret. Two weeks ago, she had argued with her best friend and classmate, Jack, over something that now seemed no big deal — a disagreement about their holiday plans. Jack wanted to go skiing with his family in the mountains, while Mia insisted on staying home with her beloved pet dog, Max. What had started as a minor difference of opinion quickly blew up into a big argument, and they hadn’t spoken since.
Mia loved Max more than anything. He had been her faithful companion since childhood, always there with a wagging tail, walking with her and offering her comfort whenever she felt lonely or afraid. With her parents often busy with work, it was Max who filled the empty spaces in her life. This holiday season, especially, she felt the need to be close to him. It had become a tradition for Mia to spend her holidays nestled up to Max, watching old movies and enjoying the quiet companionship they shared. But during their argument, Jack had called her selfish, accusing her of never wanting to try new things or go on adventures like everyone else. His biting words had cut deep, and Mia had walked away, too hurt and too proud to respond.
As the days passed, festive decorations filled the streets, and holiday cheer seemed to surround her, but Mia couldn’t shake her loneliness. Her classmates excitedly discussed their plans, and laughter bounced along the hallways. Everyone seemed joyful — everyone except Mia. She missed Jack terribly. She missed how he could make her laugh, their inside jokes, and their late-night conversations about everything under the sun. But her pride kept her from reaching out. She told herself she wasn’t ready to apologize, even though deep down, she longed to fix their friendship.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Then, on a cold Saturday morning, there was a knock at her door.

4. Which best explains the phrase “set him off” in paragraph 1?

根据第一段中“His anger was, at times, a little frightening. I’d observe him cautiously, and I would often cross the road to escape his verbal abuse. Glancing at him the wrong way could set him off, so I’d always try not to look directly at him if we crossed paths.(他的愤怒有时有点吓人。我会小心翼翼地观察他,还常常穿过马路以避开他的辱骂。用不当的方式看他一眼就可能set him off,所以如果我们在路上相遇,我总是尽量不直视他)”可知,这位清洁工容易发怒,作者刻意避开他的目光,因为错误的眼神可能会引发他的怒气,“set him off”在这里的意思是“惹恼他,使他发脾气”。故选A。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“He was feeding coins into a parking meter, apparently to prevent owners of parked cars whose payments had run out from getting fined.(他往停车计时器里投硬币,显然是为了防止停车费已用完的车主被罚款)”可知,清洁工往停车计时器里投硬币的目的是帮助人们避免停车罚单。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“To unlock one, a $1 or $2 coin was needed but I’ve never got change because who carries coins anymore? I was swearing at the trolley using words that would embarrass a convention of London street sweepers.(要解锁一辆手推车,需要1美元或2美元的硬币,但我从来没有零钱,因为现在谁还带硬币呢?

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B

12 What do the results of the research show about crows?
D. By training crows through visual and sound clues.
B Crows are the first non-human species proven to count.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then, on a cold Saturday morning, there was a knock at her door. Mia opened it curiously. To her surprise, it was Jack, standing there with a big box in his hands. His face was a bit red from the cold, and he looked a little nervous. “Hi, Mia,” he said softly. “I’m really sorry about what I said. I’ve missed you these days. I know I was wrong to call you selfish. I hope you can forgive me.” Mia was speechless for a moment, her eyes filled with a mix of shock and joy.
Inside the box was a red scarf, perfect for Max to wear during their winter walks. Jack explained that he had made it himself, spending hours knitting it with love. He said he wanted to show that he respected her love for Max and their traditions. Touched by his gesture, Mia’s heart melted. “I’m sorry too,” she said with a tear in her eye. “I should have been more understanding. I’ve missed you so much.” They hugged tightly, and in that moment, their friendship was mended, stronger than ever. The holiday spirit finally found its way back into Mia’s heart.
