In 1908, a 15-year-old girl named Georgia “Tiny” Broadwick jumped from a hot-air balloon and floated more than 1,000 feet down to Earth under a parachute (降落伞). This marked the start of a successful flying career. Broadwick went on to jump from the sky 900 times, demonstrated skydiving techniques for the U. S. Army, and inspired an invention that changed parachuting.
Born in 1893, the North Carolinian spent her youth working in a cotton factory. When she was 15, she watched the parachutist Charles Broadwick jump from a lofted balloon at a carnival. Attracted, she convinced Broadwick to teach her his act, after which she adopted his name. At a carnival in Raleigh in 1908, Broadwick performed her first public jump. Soon, audiences were lining up to see her fly.
In 1900, aviation (航空) was still in its babyhood, and Americans were thrilled about leaving the earth and being in a piece of equipment that allowed them to get closer to the heavens. They believed that parachutists could fall like angels and land safely without injury.
Soon, Broadwick became the first woman to parachute from an airplane. On one early jump, January 9, 1914, she sat in a swing suspended from a plane 2,000 feet above Los Angeles, pulled a lever, and dropped. She floated safely into Griffith Park.
Later that year, Broadwick was demonstrating parachuting for soldiers in San Diego when she encountered a big problem: her parachute’s line was catching on the aircraft, so she cut it. While free falling, Broadwick adjusted the lines to open the parachute. Her cut is often credited as the first use of a “ripcord (开伞索)”, which was later patented (专利的) by Floyd Smith.
Growing up in poverty, Broadwick showed working people that the wonders of aviation weren’t reserved only for wealthy men. Her skill and courage, Brown says, proved that “aviation is classless”.
4. What is the significance of Georgia Broadwick’s parachute jump in 1908?
A. It proved the potential of aircraft design. B. It tested the safety of military parachute.
C. It launched her professional career. D. It popularized carnival performances.
5. What was Americans attitude to early 20th century parachuting?
A. Positive. B. Skeptical. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
6. What can we learn about the “ripcord”?
A. Broadwick intended to create and claim this invention.
B. Its original idea is attributed to Broadwick’s quick thinking.
C. It was a standard piece of equipment for parachutists in 1914.
D. Broadwick and Floyd Smith worked together to develop it.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Pioneer in Parachuting B. The Early Days of Aviation
C. Women in Aviation History D. The Invention of the Ripcord

Economist Diane Coyle has spent her career carefully studying how we measure economic progress, often highlighting the shortcomings of traditional methods. In her latest book, The Measure of Progress, Counting What Really Matters, Coyle shared many insights. One of them is about the value of time.
The average Australian lifespan is about 30,000 days, and few people wish to waste these precious moments. Coyle notes that the washing machine was overlooked as an invention because many of those who benefited from it were “housewives”, for whom the benefit was more about saving time than money. She also points out that comparisons of well-being across countries often focus solely on income, neglecting to consider leisure time.
One study estimates that although Western Europeans have lower incomes than people in the US, the gap in living standards narrows considerably when leisure hours are included in the calculation. But new technologies can sometimes impose a personal “time tax”, such as when supermarkets replace staffed checkouts with self-scanning systems or when companies replace helplines with chatbots. According to Coyle, a time-use accounting framework would provide insights into both production and consumption.
The newly established well-being framework of the Australian Bureau of Statistics(ABS, 统计局), named Measuring What Matters(MWM), aims to measure social growth and influence policy by reporting on 50 well-being indicators within five themes: healthy, secure, sustainable, united and prosperous(繁荣的). “This framework can help people seek more well-being,” Coyle said.
“Occupational classifications have not kept pace with current changes in the labor market as AI and other digital tools become more widespread. Reliable national statistics are a vital yet often overlooked aspect of modern society. Few people pay attention to how they are designed, and even fewer want to read about how they might be improved,” Coyle argued. “And statistics are not just numbers on a page but a window through which we see progress itself-a crucial tool for building a well-being society.”
8. Why does the author mention the washing machine?
A. To praise the revolutionary invention for women.
B. To compare its impact with that of modern AI.
C. To show how technology helps families save money.
D. To illustrate a historically undervalued time-saving benefit.
9. What does the underlined word “impose” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Force. B. Remove. C. Calculate. D. Introduce.
10. What is the primary purpose of the “MWM” framework?
A. To replace outdated economic indicators like GDP.
B. To offer a comprehensive view of societal progress.
C. To help companies collect more accurate data.
D. To track the rapid development of the digital economy.
11. Which of the following would Coyle agree with?
A. Statistics are always meaningless numbers.
B. Statistics are key for a society’s well-being but often ignored.
C. Labor market changes don’t affect occupational classifications.
D. People pay great attention to statistical design and updates.
D
Cultural traits (特征) are influenced by conformity (从众), the tendency to agree with others, or anti-conformity, the choice to go separate ways intentionally. A new way to model this dynamic interplay could ultimately help explain social phenomena like cultural trends and the spread of misinformation.
A study published in the journal PNAS presents a novel approach. Presenting a mathematical model, Kaleda Denton and his colleagues at Stanford University expand on previous research to provide a more realistic representation of how conformist and anti-conformist prejudices influence the spread of cultural traits within a population.
Traditional models of conformity often assume that individuals tend to move toward the average or mean trait of a population. This concept works well if the most popular traits in the population are near this mean, such as working hours or food intake. However, the mean can be a misleading indicator of popularity in other contexts.
To address this gap, the authors designed a model that includes trait clustering (聚集). In this new model, individuals conform by adopting traits that are more clustered rather than the mean trait in the population. Anti-conformists, on the other hand, deliberately distance themselves from the traits of their peers, creating polarization (极化).
Using computer models, the team analyzed how traits spread across populations over multiple generations. Conformity often led to groups clustering around specific traits, but not necessarily the average. Anti-conformity created an obviously different pattern: a U-shaped distribution, with individuals clustering at the extremes and leaving the middle rarely populated.
One significant finding of the study was that populations rarely meet a single trait unless the unrealistic assumption of perfect behavioral copying is forced. Instead, even small variations in how individuals interpret or adopt traits result in persistent diversity within population.
“These outcomes of the study agree with what we observe in the real world, where cultural practices and ideas don’t simply average out but instead maintain significant variation,” Denton says. “We’re excited to see if this framework works in different contexts. The ultimate goal is to understand how individual choices influence entire populations over time.”
12. What do traditional models of conformity usually assume?
A. Individuals tend to prefer average characteristics in the group.
B. People don’t care about the group’s characteristics.
C. The most popular features are far from the mean.
D. People like unique features in the group.
13. How do anti-conformists behave in the new model?
A. They make features more clustered in the middle. B. They follow the popular features in the group.
C. They adopt the mean feature in the population. D. They try to be different from people of their age.
14. What can be concluded from the study’s findings?
A Populations always focus on a single feature.
B. Cultural practices and ideas will eventually average out.
C. Small variations in feature adoption have short-term impact on diversity.
D. Individual choices play a role in shaping the characteristics of populations.
15. What is the final goal of the study according to Denton?
A. To test the framework in different cultural contexts.
B. To analyze why cultural practices average out over time.
C. To comprehend the long-term impact of individual decisions on populations.
D. To prove that cultural variation is more significant than previously thought.

Batyr was a quiet 17-year-old boy from Kazakhstan who came to America as an exchange student. His parents had told him many times before he left, “Be polite, be respectful, and never cause trouble for others.” He was warmly welcomed by his host mother, Allison, who showed him a new room and said with a big smile, “Make yourself at home, Batyr! This is your room now.” Batyr smiled back happily but felt a little nervous. He was determined to be a good guest and follow his parents’ advice carefully.
Weeks went by quickly as Batyr started his new school life. But from his very first night,he had a small problem he didn't know how to solve. He saw a switch by the door, but when he used it, only a ceiling fan started to turn above his head. “Where is the light switch?” he thought to himself. He felt it was too silly and embarrassing to ask Allison about such a small thing. Not wanting to bother anyone, he found his own clever ways to have light in the evening. For seven long weeks, he used the bright light from his laptop screen to read and do his homework.
One rainy night, Allison came into his room to look for a book she had left there earlier. She was quite surprised to see the room was lit only by the blue light from his laptop. “Batyr, why are you sitting in the dark?” she asked with concern. Feeling a little shy and embarrassed, Batyr finally decided to tell her the truth. “Well, the switch only works for the fan. I didn’t want to trouble you about the light.” Allison’s eyes opened wide in surprise. Then she laughed kindly and explained, “Oh, Batyr! The same switch controls the light! You just need to pull this small chain hanging from the fan!” When she pulled the chain, the room was suddenly filled with warm, bright light. Batyr blinked in amazement. “I... I really didn’t know that,” he said, feeling both happy and a little foolish. The whole family thought it was a very kind and funny mistake, and they admired his good nature.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Amused and touched by his incredible politeness, Allison asked if she could share the story online.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. B

A. Populations always focus on a single feature.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One rainy night Allison came into his room to look for a book she had left there earlier.

【答案】 Amused and touched by his incredible politeness, Allison asked if she could share the story online. Batyr, though slightly embarrassed, agreed with a nod. Allison posted the story that evening, highlighting his considerate nature and the cultural misunderstanding. To their surprise, the post was soon flooded with likes and comments. People shared similar experiences of adapting to new places, praising Batyr’s patience and respect. Many were moved by his willingness to sit in the dark for weeks just to avoid being a bother.
When Batyr saw so many positive responses, he was astonished. He hadn’t realized his small struggle could resonate with so many. Reading the comments, he felt a warm connection to strangers who understood. That night, Allison gave him a gentle hug. “Sometimes,” she said, “asking for help is the most polite thing you can do. It lets people in.” Batyr finally understood. He smiled, feeling lighter. The light in his room was now always on, bright and welcoming, just like his newfound sense of belonging.
