Sally noticed something wrong with her grandma. She was always forgetting things, like where she put the sugar and what time to have dinner.
Sally’s mother said Grandma might have Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症) disease, and they might have to put her in a nursing home for proper care. Sally felt terrible at the news, worrying that Grandma would miss her own house. Her mother comforted her by saying they could visit Grandma on weekends and bring her presents. Sally thought of strawberry ice cream right away, knowing it was Grandma’s favorite.
When they visited Grandma for the first time, Sally felt like crying—Grandma sat alone in the corner of the room. Sally hugged Grandma and gave her the strawberry ice cream. Grandma took it and started eating, but she didn’t say a single word. Sally was upset to find that Grandma didn’t seem to recognize(认出) them, and her mother told her to give Grandma time. The second visit was the same: Grandma ate the ice cream but still said nothing.
Sally asked Grandma if she knew who she was. Grandma answered that Sally was the girl who brought her ice cream. Sally reminded Grandma that she was her granddaughter, but Grandma only repeated that Sally was the ice cream girl. At that moment, Sally realized Grandma would never remember her name.
Sally told Grandma she loved her, and a tear (眼泪) rolled down Grandma’s cheek. Grandma said she remembered love, and Sally’s mother explained that love was all Grandma wanted. In the story of Snow White, the queen decides to kill Snow White with a poisonous (有毒的) apple. Thanks to seven helpful dwarves (小矮人) and a handsome prince, Snow White gets well again.
But the queen doesn’t need to go to all that trouble. In fact, apples--along with many common fruits we eat are already poisonous! But don’t be afraid. The flesh won’t harm you. It’s only the seeds that you need to avoid.
This is because those seeds have something surprising that is called amygdalin Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into a strong poison called cyanide (氰化物). And cyanide can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them. Still, don’t worry if you accidentally eat a few seeds. Each seed has only very little poison. You’d have to eat a large bowl of seeds to feel any effect.
Why does a tree make poisonous seeds? ▲ ! Amygdalin tastes terrible. It’s also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees. If a cow eats apple leaves, it gets a bad taste and an upset stomach. Animals soon learn to leave those trees alone. Thanks, amygdalin!

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the cleverest fruit of all?
You, my apple!

原文第一段“In the story of Snow White, the queen decides to kill Snow White with a poisonous (有毒的) apple. Thanks to seven helpful dwarves (小矮人) and a handsome prince, Snow White gets well again.”
根据原文第三段“Each seed has only very little poison. You’d have to eat a large bowl of seeds to feel any effect.”可知,单颗苹果籽毒素含量极少,只是误食少量籽粒不会出现中毒、死亡的情况(①);根据原文第三段“Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into a strong poison called cyanide.”可知,苦杏仁苷进入动物肠胃后,会化学反应生成剧毒氰化物(②);根据原文第四段“It’s also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees.”
It’s also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees. If a cow eats apple leaves, it gets a bad taste and an upset stomach. Animals soon learn to leave those trees alone.”
