1st May is a holiday in many parts of the world. But May Day means different things to different people. For some, it is a time to celebrate spring. For others, it is the day to remember the workers of the world.
May Day was popular in Europe for hundreds of years. The traditions were different from place to place. But the main idea was always the same—people celebrated the spring.
In Sweden, people made “Old Man Winter” out of wood. They threw him on a fire to show the end of winter and the start of spring.
In English villages, young people danced around the maypole (五朔节花柱)—a tall pole in the centre of the town. A May Queen was chosen from the young women.
At one time, people believed that these May Day celebrations helped them to grow good crops for the next year. People don’t believe this today, but many of the traditions continue.
In the modern world, May Day is also the day to remember workers around the world. This day was chosen at an international meeting of socialists in Paris in 1889. They wanted to remember four men who died for workers’ rights in the US in 1886. Later, people in some countries fought on this day for workers’ rights around the world.

C.Mr Black, twenty years old.
D.Ms Green, twenty-two years old.

Health experts often remind us that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is good for our health. But do you know that eating food of different colors is also important? This idea, sometimes called “eating the rainbow”, is a simple but useful way to make sure your body gets all the goodness it needs.
▲ The answer lies in something called phytochemicals (植物化学物质). They not only give fruit and vegetables their colors, but also offer different health benefits. For example, the phytochemicals in carrots give them the orange color and make them good for our joints (关节).
Experts often sort colorful foods into several main groups: yellow, white brown, red, orange, purple blue, and green. Every group has something valuable to offer, so trying to get one or two things from each group each day is a good goal.
What might a day of “eating the rainbow” look like? For breakfast, you could have milk with strawberries, bananas and blueberries. That covers red, yellow, and purple blue. For lunch, you could have a salad with lettuce (生菜), carrots, purple cabbage, corn and red peppers. That covers green, orange, purple blue, yellow and red. Then for dinner, you could have cauliflower (花椰菜). It covers white brown. In this way, you can cover all the different color groups in one day.
In short, by filling your plate with different colors every day, you can easily make your meals healthier. Mother Nature makes it easy for us.
27.What is the main purpose of “eating the rainbow”?
A.To help you eat less meat.
B.To make meals look more beautiful.
C.To follow the most popular eating habits.
D.To help your body get all the nutrients (营养物).
28.Which of the following can we put into the blank “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2?
A.Why do things have different colours?
B.Why do colours matter so much?
C.How can we get more healthy food?
D.What are the main food colour groups?
29.Who had the best dinner according to the “rainbow diet” idea?
A.Leo: I had potatoes and porridge.
B.Maya: I ate a bowl of mutton dumplings.
C.Sam: I had fish, steamed corn, carrots and grapes.
D.Lena: I had tomato soup, red peppers and strawberries.
30.What could be the best title for the text?

Helping sick turtles get better

Helping people learn to protect turtles

Last week I went to an art show. A painting caught my eyes. To my surprise, Steven, one of my students, drew it. Steven liked painting and he was good at painting. He could easily understand what I taught in class. But he was from a poor family. He didn’t have money to buy paints for painting. So sometimes I gave him some. He practised painting hard. And he often showed his paintings to the class. Every summer vacation, he came to borrow some art books from me. When the new term began, he showed some of his paintings to me. I felt surprised that they were so good. Later he went to a famous art university. After finishing school, he still tried his best to improve himself. His hard work and strong mind made him better.

Welcome to China. I am Li Mei, the student president. Here is some advice for you.
First, please learn some basic table manners. For example, never stick chopsticks vertically into rice, as it is considered impolite in Chinese culture. Second, if you feel upset or lonely because of culture shock, you can talk to your teachers or take part in different school clubs. It will surely help you get used to the new life.
