Last month, I visited the Clay Figure Zhang studio (工作室) in Tianjin with my class. It was an unforgettable day!
The studio makes special clay (黏土) figurines (小雕像), a famous Chinese folk art. The teacher Zhang Yu showed us how to make them. He said they use clay from the local river, and it takes many steps to finish one piece: sculpting (雕刻), painting and firing (烧制). The clay horse figurine for the Year of the Horse looked so real and lively.
We tried to make small clay works ourselves. I learned to knead (揉;捏) the clay carefully and paint bright colors. Zhang told us this art has a long history of over 200 years. To keep it alive, they also make new things like fridge magnets.
This trip taught me that traditional art can be both old and new. I felt proud of our rich culture. It was truly a day to remember!
