Kelly, Sara and Tina were classmates but not good friends. On Tuesday, Mrs. White put them together to work on a project—making a volcano (火山).
When they sat down for the first planning meeting, they felt a little shy at first. Then they had a fight about the project.
Mrs. White realized the situation and calmed (使平静) the girls down. She suggested that they have a good discussion and make a list of things on which they agreed and disagreed. However, the three girls had their own ideas and would not work together to move ahead. So they didn’t get anything done until Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, Mrs. White called the girls up to her desk.

When we talk, we usually expect others to listen. But when someone else is speaking, are you really listening to what they are saying?
Listening well doesn’t come naturally to most people. Because most of us live in a busy world, we keep our mind on certain things and tune out the rest. This also means we often don’t really pay attention to what people are saying. One way to listen with more care and attention is to practise active listening.
Active listening centres on what someone is communicating and shows your understanding. Active listening is not only hearing some-one’s words but also taking note of their nonverbal (非语言的) com-munication. Nonverbal communication can include body language, the tone (语调) of a speaker’s voice and their talking speed. This useful skill makes others want to discuss things with us.
To get better at active listening, give the speaker your complete attention. It is easier said than done. Putting your mobile phones away and clearing your mind of your own thoughts are good first steps. By doing those, it is easier to give your complete attention to the speaker.
Another way to practise active listening is to know about body language. When someone is speaking, his or her body language is giving information, too. With that in mind, you can smile or keep eye contact (交流) to show that you are listening carefully.
A key part of active listening is asking questions. In this way, the speaker will know if your understanding is right. And if there’s a misunderstanding, he or she can correct you. Asking questions also helps you completely understand the other person. The speaker will feel encouraged by your attention.

Listening well doesn’t come naturally to most people. Because most of us live in a busy world, we keep our mind on certain things and tune out the rest. This also means we often don’t really pay attention to what people are saying. One way to listen with more care and attention is to practise active listening.
Active listening centres on what someone is communicating and shows your understanding. Active listening is not only hearing some-one’s words but also taking note of their nonverbal (非语言的) com-munication.
