My family had a long history of growing up poor. Both my mom and dad came from large families with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their parents had also grown up with very little.
When I was five, I showed interest in computers. Before long, I was trying to take apart (拆卸) an old computer in my school’s classroom. By Grade 3, I had learned to program. Then, one day in high school, my computer science teacher suggested I take part in a computer training activity. He gave me a brochure (宣传手册) and I excitedly took it home. However, that excitement quickly disappeared as my mom saw the price of the activity. That evening, I went into my room and cried my eyes out.
But a few weeks later, I got a phone call. It was the head of the training activity telling me I’d be taking part in it. I could hardly believe my ears. During the activity, I met many like-minded kids and learned many skills.
Then, two years after that life-changing summer, one day, I received another call from the head. “I’ve found something I think you’ll want to see,” he said. He suggested we meet. When we met, he took out a long, handwritten letter my mom had sent when I was 15. She wrote I was the smartest kid. She talked a lot about my early love for computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t pay for the cost of the activity and hoped that they would still accept me. I broke down in tears right then and there.
Over the years, I went on to learn as much as I could. I got a job where I could use all my skills. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve changed my family’s history of living poorly. And all I want to do now is sit down with my mom and thank her for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life I have today.

Have you ever noticed how your brain changes during exercise? Have you noticed its magical effect on your thinking? We all know that exercise is good for our body. And recent studies show that physical activity can actually change the brain in some ways, making us think better and feel happier.
The first change is about the brain’s ability to learn and remember. When we exercise, our heart sends more blood to the brain. This helps the brain cells (细胞) grow and become stronger. Scientists have found that a part of the brain called the hippocampus (海马), which is very important for memory, gets larger in people who exercise often. This means these people may find it easier to learn new things and get higher scores on tests.
Besides a better memory, exercise is also a powerful way to improve our mood. During and after physical activity, the brain produces more “feel-good” chemicals (化学物质). These natural brain chemicals help to diminish feelings of worry and stress. You don’t need to run a long way to get the result. Even a short walk or some simple sports can make you feel more relaxed and happier.
So, how can you add more exercise to your life? You don’t have to be a player. The key is to pick something you like doing. It could be walking or riding a bike to school, joining a dance club, or just playing ball games with friends in the park. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days.
In short, exercise is not just about building a healthy body. It is also one of the most useful ways to build a healthier, happier, and smarter brain. Next time when you need a break from study, perhaps going out for some exercise is the best choice.

33. What does the underlined word “diminish” mean?
A. make...less B. make...stronger C. make...clearer D. make...worse
34. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

B. To introduce the scientific discoveries about the human brain.
C. To encourage readers to exercise to be healthy in body and mind.
D. To describe different kinds of sports activities suitable for readers.
35. What is the structure of the text?

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is pleased with the grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend told a funny joke. ____36____ But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are happy. There are other good reasons to smile often.
____37____ In fact, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to smile. On the other hand, it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness. So give the muscles in your face a rest and smile!
____38____ People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing nice clothes. However, there is a famous saying: a smile is the best thing a person can wear. That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy all the time.
Smiles have power. Both smiling and laughing can easily and quickly spread from one person to another. If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly, when a person laughs, people tend (倾向于) to laugh with them. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is share a smile or laugh. ____39____

A Good Habit I Have Developed
As we all know, good habits help us succeed. A good habit I have developed is making a daily study plan.
To develop it, I started by setting small goals. Every evening, I would write down the tasks for the next day, such as reviewing English words. At first, it was difficult to stick to the plan, but gradually it became a part of my daily life.
This habit has greatly benefited me. It not only improves my time management but also gives me a sense of achievement after completing each task. Most importantly, studying in an organized way has helped me get better grades. All in all, a good study plan is the key to success. I will continue this habit.
