Light rain continued to fall as I arrived at the mountain village. With a heavy bag on my back, I was excited to teach at a small school here, but a little 1 . What would these students be like?
The school had only 18 students. Most were quiet, 2 they ran and laughed at break. One girl, Wen, always sat alone in the corner, seldom saying anything. On my first day in the classroom, I shared with them a 3 with the words “You are seen” on it and put it up on the wall. Some smiled shyly and some spoke quietly. “That’s why I’m here,” I said. Days passed quickly. The lessons were 5 planned. The children were kind. But my effort seemed to make little difference. I was not sure if I was doing anything 6 .
One night, a heavy storm caused a power cut, leaving the classroom in darkness. As everyone was frozen, a soft light appeared. It was Wen who was holding a 7 in her hand. “We can still read,” she said in a low voice. That was the first time I heard her voice.
The next day, she sat 8 to her classmates. In the following days, she began to talk more. In my last class, she came up and gave me the lantern. “So you will always have some 9 ,” she smiled gently.

后文作者疑惑“What would these students be like?”
so“因此”表因果,since“自从”表时间或原因,when“当……时候”表示时间,均不合逻辑。
3.句意:在教室的第一天,我和他们分享了一张上面写着“你们被看见了”的海报,并把它贴在墙上。
能贴在墙上展示话语的通常是海报,应填poster。dictionary“字典”、book“书”和timetable“时间表”一般不贴在墙上展示标语。
4.句意:然而,温没有抬头看。
后文“She was just drawing circles on the desk with her finger.” stand up“站起来”、give up“放弃”和wake up“醒来”与语境动作不符。

后文明确说到“she came up and gave me the lantern.”,此处对应下文,应填lantern。
根据后文“she began to talk more.”,此处表示她开始交流,说明心理距离拉近,坐得更近,应填closer。

What is the secret to happiness? In a Ted Talk, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said he had found the answer: flow (心流).
Flow is the experience of being fully lost in a certain task. Csikszentmihalyi described it in his Ted Talk as an exciting feeling which happens naturally. He says “Flow is an ideal state (状态) of mind where every part of the mind and body work together towards one purpose. Then we feel our best and we do our best.” People can get into a flow state when doing “just about anything”, he adds.
After interviewing a lot of people who said they had experienced the flow, Csikszentmihalyi found five conditions in flow states:
· Forgetting about time · Having a sense of excitement
· Knowing exactly what you want · Getting feedback (反馈) on what you are doing right now
· Knowing your purpose can be achieved, even if (即使) it is difficult
A flow state sounds lovely. So ________?
“It is impossible to decide when to get into flow.” says Norsworthy, a leader of Flow Center. But we can get more chances to experience it, he adds.
The key to entering a flow state is choosing a proper task according to your ability and skills. A task that doesn’t need much skill, like washing the clothes, may lead to little interest. A task with great difficulty where one doesn’t have the needed skill may make people nervous. However, if a task is difficult and we have the skills necessary to finish it, there’s higher chance for us to experience flow.
Norsworthy talks about his running practice. “When I first got started, it was not a flow state at all,” he says. As he practised more, he began to achieve a flow state. However, he also mentions that there are some actions that may stop you getting into a flow state. Knowing how to avoid these actions is important.
1.How did Csikszentmihalyi find the conditions of flow?
A.By doing some science tests. B.By reading books about happiness.
C.By talking about flow in his Ted Talk. D.By asking people about their experiences.
2.Which of the following shows a person is in a flow state?
A.When I am reading interesting books, I have no sense of time.
B.When I am doing a task, I don’t know what I should do next.
C.When I am in a football team, I find myself less important.
D.When I finish a task, my teacher doesn’t give me his opinion.
3.Which is the most suitable for the blank ________?
A.why is flow state so important B.when do you enter a flow state
C.how do you achieve a flow state D.what is a flow state
4.What may the writer talk about next?
A.The usages of flow. B.The killers of flow.
C.The examples of flow. D.The activities of flow.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.B
根据“After interviewing a lot of people who said they had experienced the flow, Csikszentmihalyi found five conditions in flow states”可知,Csikszentmihalyi是通过询问人们的经历来发动心流状态的条件的。故选D。
根据“After interviewing a lot of people who said they had experienced the flow, Csikszentmihalyi found five conditions in flow states:”以及方框中第一个条件“Forgetting about time”可知,一个人处于心流状态时,会忘记时间。故选A。
根据“The key to entering a flow state is choosing a proper task according to your ability and skills. ”可知,此处应讲述是如何进入心流状态的。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据“However, he also mentions that there are some actions that may stop you getting into a flow state. Knowing how to avoid these actions is important.”
In the centre of the busy city, where skyscrapers kissed the clouds and people hurried about, there was a small park. It was an island of peace in the city center, a place where I, a high school boy, often went to after school.
One sunny afternoon, as I sat on a bench, my attention was drawn to a street performer preparing his act. He was a middle-aged man with a warm smile and eyes that shone with courage mixed with life’s wisdom. Placing his hat on the ground, he began to play the violin, each note filled with sad beauty that seemed to tell tales of his life’s journey.
I watched as the crowd passed by, most too preoccupied (心事重重) with their own thoughts to notice the soulful melodies that surrounded them. Suddenly, a coin would clink into the hat, but for the most part, the performer was overlooked.
Coming close to him when he took a break, I asked, “Don’t you ever feel disheartened when people don’t stop to listen?”
He looked at me with a gentle smile and replied. “Disheartened? Yes; there are moments. But I tell myself that my music is a personal expression, not just a performance for others.”
“Is it the money that keeps you going?” I asked, looking at the collection in his hat.
He smiled, “The money is not bad, but it’s not the driving force. I play because I’m crazy about music. Every note I make is part of me that I share with the world. Whether anyone listens or not, I stay true to my love for the art.”
His words struck a chord (和音) within me. Here was a person who is indifference (冷漠) of the world, but hold on to his pursuit (追求) of happiness. It was a powerful lesson in endurance (忍耐力) and self-worth.
As the sun set, painting the sky orange and pink, he continued his playing. This time, I listened with new ears. The music was no longer just a melody; it was the strength and spirit of humanity.
When it was finally time for me to head home, I placed a coin in his hat, not only as an act of charity, but as a respect for a man who had taught me a valuable life lesson: to follow one’s passion bravely even without an audience.
1.What did the park mean to the writer in the story?
A.It was where he enjoyed music.
B.It was where he relaxed after school.
C.It was where he met the street performer.
D.It was where he had to pass on his way home.
2.What can we infer from the fact that most people passed by without noticing the performer’s music?
A.People didn’t want to pay a coin.
B.The music was not attractive enough.
C.People were busy with their own lives.
D.The park was too noisy for them to hear the music.
3.What does the word “disheartened” in Paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A.Excited about performing. B.Sad and losing confidence.
C.Angry at others. D.Tired from playing.
4.What did the boy learn from the street performer?
A.People should keep doing what you love even if no one watches.
B.Money is necessary for artists to survive.
C.Music can express personal stories beautifully.
D.Busy city life makes people turn blind to art.

In Paralympic Sports (残奥会), many blind or nearly blind athletes race (比赛) with the help of a guide. These pairs work very closely together.
Jerusa Geber is a runner who lost her sight as a teenager. When she races with her guide Garcia, he runs to her left. They each hold one end of a short rope. If they’ve started well, he matches her speed bit by bit, but with the opposite foot. They work so well together that Jerusa now holds the women’s world record in the 100-meter race for blind or nearly blind athletes.
Since 2012, guides in the Paralympics can win medals too. But the teamwork is about more than just winning. Garcia is a runner himself. “I like being a guide.” he said. “I feel more pressure (压力) at the Paralympics. I have to give 200% of myself to avoid mistakes and help my teammate do her best.”
In cycling, Hannah Chadwick and her guide, Skyler Espinoza, also work closely. When they ride together, Espinoza always holds Chadwick’s hand before starting. “It’s a reminder (提示) that we’re in this together.” Espinoza said.
Chadwick and Espinoza follow the same training plan. Sometimes, when the training gets hard, Chadwick thinks of her teammate. “I’m not training just for myself.” she said. “I’m training for both of us!”
People sometimes say Espinoza is making a sacrifice (牺牲) for a disabled athlete. But she doesn’t see it that way. Espinoza believes that if she hadn’t been a Paralympic guide, she would never have shone so much in sports. “I’m lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose to do it with her.” she said.
1.How does Garcia help the blind athlete Jerusa Geber?
A.He walks in front of her to show the path.
B.He runs behind her and shouts directions.
C.He rides a bicycle next to her to guide the way.
D.He holds a rope, running beside her with the opposite foot.
2.Which of the following words best describes the guides in the Paralympics?
A.Crazy. B.Generous. C.Brave. D.Humorous.
3.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Winning Together B.How to Become a Great Guide
C.Special Help for Athletes D.The Hard Life of Paralympic Athletes
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A
根据文章第二段“When she races with her guide Garcia, he runs to her left. They each hold one end of a short rope… with the opposite foot.”
故选A。
Though Sylvia had grown up among tall buildings and busy streets, she had recently found herself more at home in the Maine countryside, where she had come to help her aging grandmother. She let the cow out to walk in the nearby fields every morning and led it back home in the evenings, staying with the woods and her animal neighbours every day.
One evening, when Sylvia walked back home from the fields, she saw a stranger coming out of the forest. When the man reached her, he explained that he was quite interested in collecting rare birds and was searching for the white heron (苍鹭) nested (筑巢) in the area according to his book. He asked if he could stay at her house. Though Sylvia was a little bit worried, she led him to her grandmother.
Over dinner, Sylvia’s grandmother told the man how her son had loved making friends with animals while he enjoyed living in the wild and that Sylvia was just the same. On hearing the news, the man offered Sylvia a lot of money to help him find the white heron, telling that he planned to shoot (打猎) and put it into his collection. Sylvia knew her grandmother had little savings, so she accepted.
The next day, Sylvia and the man searched the forest for the white heron, but they came back empty-handed. At first, Sylvia was afraid of the man’s shooting and collection plan. With some time passing by, she was surprised to find that he was a person with a warm heart and rich knowledge of birds. The two led the cow home together in the afternoon.
Just before bed, Sylvia remembered that one tree in the forest stood taller than the rest. If she managed to climb it, she would surely find the heron’s nest below. The thought made her so excited that she couldn’t sleep. She finally got out of house in the early morning to find the heron before the man awoke.
Reaching the top of the tree was a success in itself, but nothing was more amazing than the moment Sylvia truly saw the heron. High as a bird, she felt she and the heron were one, and she suddenly realized she couldn’t be part of its death. The man was waiting for her when she returned home, but she refused to help him any longer.
Later, Sylvia wondered whether giving up the money—and the man’s friendship—was really worth (值得) the heron’s life, but the treasures she might have gained were easily forgotten among the beauty of the wild.

根据倒数第二段“The man was waiting for her when she returned home, but she refused to help him any longer.”和最后一段“Later, Sylvia wondered whether giving up the money—and the man’s friendship—was really worth (值得) the heron’s life”可知,Sylvia拒绝帮助这个男人找苍鹭,放弃了和这个男人建立的友谊,由此推测,Sylvia决定保护苍鹭。故选B。
IS SUCCESS ABOUT LEARNING—OR SHOWING YOU’RE SMART?
Benjamin once said, “I don’t divide (分) the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures. I divide the world into the learners and nonlearners.”
What would make someone a nonlearner? Everyone is born with an intense drive (驱动力) to learn. Babies practise their skills daily, even the most difficult tasks of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. They never think it’s too hard. Babies don’t worry about making mistakes. They walk, they fall and they get up. They just move forward.
What could put an end to this kind of learning? The fixed mindset (固定的思维模式). As soon as children become able to evaluate(评价) themselves, some of them become afraid of hard tasks. They become afraid of not being smart. I have studied thousands of students, and you can’t believe how many people refuse a chance to learn.
We offered four-year-olds a choice (选择): They could red o an easy task or they could try a harder one. Even at this age, children with the fixed mindset—stuck with the safe one. Children with the growth mindset—the ones who believed you could get smarter by learning—thought it was a strange choice. Why are you asking me this? Why would anyone want to keep doing the same task over and over? They chose one hard one after another. “I’m dying to solve them!” one little girl said.
So children with the fixed mindset want to make sure they are successful. Smart people should always be successful. But for children with the growth mindset, success is about practising themselves. It’s about learning to become smarter.
One seventh-grade girl made a conclusion.“I think being smart is something you have to work for…it isn’t just given to you… Most kids, if they’re not sure of an answer, will not raise their hand to answer the question. But what I usually do is to raise my hand, because if I’m wrong, then my mistake will be corrected. Just by doing that I’m improving my ability.”

Hearing that Erin was coming for the silver wedding party, Mr. Joe and his wife got worried.
“Erin the thief!” said Mr. Joe to his wife. “Anything smaller than a table, and more expensive than paper, would finally be found in his bag.”
“He’s sure to come for the presents we’ve received,” added Mrs. Joe. “We can’t hide them all. How can we deal with him?”
“We must keep an eye on him,” said Mr. Joe.
As soon as Erin arrived, the couple started to keep a sharp lookout. After dinner, the three talked nervously from one boring topic to another in the living room.
Suddenly, Erin asked, “You’ve got so many presents. Can I take a look at those pretty silk scarves?”
“Only it’s annoying to have seven of them,” Mr. Joe blurted

Erin’s eyes widened as he was listening. Mrs. Joe handed the scarf to Erin.
“Please take your scarf back. It’s unfair to you. Really hope you can forgive us for everything we did,” Mr. Joe said.
Erin refused the scarf with a smile. “It has always been for you. Please keep it. Just want you to know that people change.”

In small villages, people often say hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets, or outside their homes. But in cities, many people don’t greet their neighbors, even when they are standing in line at a supermarket. A recent study shows that greeting neighbors, especially up to six people a day, is really good for you.
The study has found that greeting others can make you happier. When you greet people, your happiness score (幸福指数) goes up. The magic number is six. After that, the score shows no further rise. The study was carried out last year and got replies from more than 4,000 people. It tested people’s social happiness, physical happiness, community happiness and more. People who greeted six neighbors had a much higher happiness score than those who didn’t greet anyone.
You might think that saying hello is only about social happiness, but that’s not true. Regular (经常的) greetings also improve your physical and community happiness. That’s because all of these are joined together. If you feel your community is safe, it’s more possible for you to talk to people. Walking around your neighborhood can make you feel better physically.
Dan Witters, the leader of the study, said, “We don’t mean that you should know the person well. Just stop and talk to them. The more people you greet, the more chances you have to start a conversation.”
Remember, saying hello regularly is a good way to improve your own happiness.
1.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By telling a story.
B.By explaining the reason.
C.By asking a question.
D.By introducing different situations.
2.Which of the following shows the change in happiness score after people greet neighbors?
A. B.
C. D.
3.What can we learn from Dan Witters’ words?
A.The more people you know, the happier you are.
B.Saying hello may help people start a conversation.
C.Nothing improves happiness more than conversations.
D.Knowing people is more important than greeting them.
1.第一段前两句对比了两种不同的情景:“In small villages, people often say hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets, or outside their homes. But in cities, many people don’t greet their neighbors…”,这通过对比人们在农村和城市中对待邻居的不同交际状况,自然地导入了文章的主题。
2.第二段详细描述了打招呼人数与幸福指数之间的数量关系:“When you greet people, your happiness score goes up. The magic number is six. After that, the score shows no further rise.”,这说明在打招呼的人数达到六人之前,幸福指数呈上升趋势;在达到六人之后,幸福指数保持平稳,不再上升。
3.第四段引用了研究项目负责人Dan Witters的话:“…The more people you greet, the more chances you have to start a conversation.”,这直接说明了主动与更多的人打招呼、说你好,可以帮人们创造更多开始交谈和对话的机会。
You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often related to weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.
But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.
Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff.
In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially (潜在地) dangerous people, places, and activities.
Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride.
Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.
Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals (化学物质), especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.
In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.
“Watch people walking out of a haunted house (鬼屋), and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.
People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. Some studies show that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.
“You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you're better able to work through it during stressful situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to love your fear. It may make us stronger.
1.Why is a scary roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the article?
A.It improves people’s ability to survive in the modern world.
B.It makes people less cowardly and more confident in life.
C.It causes the brain to produce chemicals that make people happy and excited.
D.It teaches people how to keep away from things that could be dangerous.
2.The underlined phrase “bond with” in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.get closer to B.fight against C.pay attention to D.be more careful with
3.What is the right attitude toward fear according to the article?
A.Avoid being involved in scary situations.
B.Experience it as often as possible.
C.Consider it as a sign of weakness.
D.Enjoy healthy fear from time to time.
4.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.People’s misunderstandings about fear.
B.Different ways to deal with fear.
C.The advantages that fear brings us.
D.The importance of avoiding fear in daily life.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.C
1.根据文章第5段提到“scary roller coaster ride”,紧接着第7段引用Margee Kerr的解释:“Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals... create feelings of happiness and excite us”可知可怕的过山车能让大脑产生使人快乐和兴奋的化学物质,这是其对人有帮助的原因。
因此,文章的主要内容是关于恐惧带来的优势“The advantages that fear brings us”。
Sometimes, making someone happy is easy—just say a few words that really satisfy him.
From strangers to your family and closest friends, there are many nice things we can say to them to bring a little kindness to the world.
However, some people find it difficult to say something nice to others. Recently, the topic “Don’t feel ashamed to give praise” has gone popular on social media. People shared personal experiences when people felt too shy to say something nice about someone. They also expressed their worries: “What if others think my words are just flattery(奉承)?” “What if I praise someone and only get the cold shoulder?” Because of these fears, some choose to stay quiet, leaving kind words unsaid.
This small habit seems harmless, but it can hide our true feelings. Little by little, we get used to keeping our praise, care and kindness deep inside. Over time, it can change our relationships and even reduce our own sense of happiness. As a result, we may start to feel distant from others.
In fact, saying something nice doesn’t mean we are trying to please others against our wishes. Instead, it shows we pay attention to the strengths and efforts of those around us, and we value and respect them.
A simple and sincere praise can warm someone’s heart, reduce misunderstandings (误会) and bring people together. So next time you see your friend wearing a beautiful coat, why not give him sincere praise? For example, you can focus on details like “This colour looks great on you!” or “You really have good taste in music!” These kind words not only make your friend happy but also create a pleasant feeling between you.
Kind words cost nothing, but they can mean everything.
1.Why do some people find it hard to praise others?
A.Because they like to keep their praise inside.
B.Because they think kind words cost too much.
C.Because they may praise others against wishes.
D.Because they worry others will not like their words.
2.What does the phrase “cold shoulder” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.A polite and warm welcome. B.A shy and quiet conversation.
C.A silent and unfriendly reply. D.A cold and dishonest manner.
3.The writer mentions “This colour looks great on you” as an example to show that ________.
A.praise on clothing is always the perfect choice
B.a simple and detailed praise can build good relationships
C.a simple praise can sometimes reduce misunderstandings
D.friends usually care more about their appearance than other things
4.What would be the best title of the passage?
A.The Secret to True Happiness B.Why We Should Not Praise Others
C.The Power of a Sincere Praise D.How to Avoid Misunderstandings
5.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain why some people are afraid of giving praise.
B.To encourage readers to express sincere praise to others.
C.To tell readers how to tell flattery from true praise.
D.To show that keeping kind words inside is sometimes better.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.B 4.C 5.B

1.文章第三段第四句、第五句“What if others think my words are just flattery?”“What if I praise someone and only get the cold shoulder?”
2.根据画线词所在句“What if I praise someone and only get the cold shoulder?”
3.文章第六段“A simple and sincere praise can warm someone’s heart... create a pleasant feeling between you.”

C.The examples of flow. D.The activities of flow.

Joe blurted
Erin studied the scarves carefully, lost in thought. The couple got more anxious.
After Erin went to sleep, Mrs. Joe counted the presents immediately. “I’m not sure if we’ve lost anything,” she doubted.
“He must have taken something,” claimed Mr. Joe angrily. “The awful pig hasn’t brought us a present. How dare he take anything from us?”
“Let’s go through his bag late at night,” Mrs. Joe suggested.
The search was a short one. They found a silk scarf carefully placed in the bag.
Mrs. Joe quickly picked it up and put it into her pocket.
The next morning, Erin was late for breakfast. “Something’s been taken out of my bag,” he said. “It was a present I had prepared for your silver wedding, only it happened to be a scarf. You seemed annoyed at having so many, so I thought I’d get it changed, but now it’s gone.”
The couple turned deadly pale. Mrs. Joe ran to the living room and surprisingly, she found their seven scarves were still there. ________
Mrs. Joe returned with Erin’s scarf. “This one is yours,” she went on. “It’s an unpleasant thing to say. Actually, we took it last night. It all started because there were some unkind words about you. It’s really shameful to go through your bag without asking.”
Erin’s eyes widened as he was listening. Mrs. Joe handed the scarf to Erin.
“Please take your scarf back. It’s unfair to you. Really hope you can forgive us for everything we did,” Mr. Joe said.

C.Nothing improves happiness more than conversations.
D.Knowing people is more important than greeting them.

D.The importance of avoiding fear in daily life.
