Do you know that plants can communicate with each other? Scientists have found that when a plant is in danger, it can send signals (信号) to nearby plants, and these invisible signals can help the whole group avoid (避免) various threats (威胁) effectively.
For example, if an insect starts eating a tomato plant, the hurt plant will quickly send out a special chemical (化学物质) into the air. This chemical acts as a clear warning message, telling other tomato plants to prepare for the coming insect attack (攻击). Right away, the other plants begin to change the chemical composition of their leaves, making them taste bitter and unpleasant so that insects don’t want to eat them anymore.
Plants can also communicate through their roots (根) in amazing and complex ways. They can share water and important nutrients (营养物) with each other, especially when some individuals are short of essential resources. Some trees in the forest are even connected through a hidden underground network of fungi (真菌), which works like a natural “information highway”. Bigger, older trees, which are better at absorbing (吸收) sunlight and nutrients, can help smaller, younger trees by sending them food through this network, helping the little ones survive and grow stronger.
This wonderful communication helps plants grow better and stay healthy in their natural environment. It shows that plants are far smarter than we used to think. We should protect plants carefully because they are not only living things with their own unique “social systems” but also play an important role in keeping our environment balanced and stable.
11. How do plants communicate when they are in danger?
A. By sending out chemicals. B. By making loud sounds.
C. By moving their leaves. D. By changing their colors.
12. Why do other plants make their leaves taste bad?
A. To attract insects. B. To protect themselves from insects.
C. To grow faster. D. To get more sunlight.
13. How can bigger trees help smaller trees?
A. By giving them more water. B. By protecting them from wind.
C. By shading them. D. By sending them food through roots.
14. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Plants are not important. B. Plants are dangerous.
C. Plants can communicate. D. Plants can’t grow without insects.
15. What should we do according to the passage?
A. Study plants more. B. Protect plants.
C. Eat more plants. D. Grow plants at home.

Have you ever wondered what your life will be like in the future? Do you want to talk to your future self? A new online chat App called Future You has made this possible, reported MIT News in October.
Future You was made by scientists from the US. Using AI, the program begins by asking you questions about your looks, life and future plans. AI then uses all of these to make a model of you at the age of 60. You can ask this older “ you” questions and get to know how to be better for the future.
The App can even show you a picture of what you might look like when you are 60. A scientist from MIT, Pattie Maes, says Future You is very detailed and makes the future “ you” seem very real. The people who made Future You say it helps people think about the long term by making them feel more connected with their future self. The more you feel, the better decisions you’ll be able to make for your future, like saving money or studying hard.
Scientists tested Future You with 344 people. Those who talked to Future You for 10 to 30 minutes felt less worried and more excited about the future, than those who just filled out (填写) surveys.
However, Future You has some limits (限制). “It’s not clear if people really change their actions after talking to their future self,” Ivo Vlaev from the UK’s University of Warwick says, “ Also, the AI can only show one possible future, not many different ones.”
16. What can we learn about Future You?
A. People can use it next October. B. It needs to know something about you first.
C. It helps 344 people fight with illnesses. D. People older than 70 can’t talk to it.
17. What can people do by using Future You?
A. Get ideas about the future. B. Give something useful to AI.
C. Learn to draw pictures well. D. Write stories about their future.
18. Why did the scientists test Future You with 344 people?
A. To prove that the App could help people look younger.
B. To find out how the App influenced people’s feelings about the future.
C. To collect enough money for the further development of the App.
D. To show that the App could predict all possible future lives.
19. From the last paragraph, we can learn that ________.
A. it’s necessary for everyone to talk to Future You
B. we would keep testing to get better results
C. more and more people get help from Future You
D. we shouldn’t take Future You’s words too seriously
20. Which is the best title for the passage?

Paper cutting is one of China’s most popular traditional folk arts with a history of over 1,500 years. It first appeared in the Han Dynasty, when people began to make and use paper widely across the country. Over the centuries, this art form has been passed down from generation to generation. People in different regions added their own creative ideas to it and made it more colorful and diverse (多种多样的). Some areas even developed unique styles, so local paper cuttings are easy to tell apart (区分).
People use just a pair of sharp scissors or a small carving knife to cut paper into various beautiful patterns. The materials are simple—usually red paper, and red symbolizes (象征) good luck and joy in Chinese culture. Common patterns include lovely flowers, lively animals like rabbits and peacocks (孔雀), and interesting scenes from traditional stories or fairy tales. Skilled artists finish a delicate piece in just a few minutes, while a complex (复杂的) work may take hours of careful cutting. During festivals like the Spring Festival, people often put these delicate paper cuttings on windows, doors and walls. These decorations (装饰品) add a warm and festive (节日的) atmosphere to their homes.
Paper cutting is not only a form of art but also carries people’s wishes for a better life. Every tiny cut and every beautiful pattern hides the creator’s hope for health, happiness and peace. Today, this traditional art still wins the love of many people of all ages.

C. It helps 344 people fight with illnesses. D. People older than 70 can’t talk to it.

A. Get ideas about the future. B. Give something useful to AI.
C. Learn to draw pictures well. D. Write stories about their future.

A. To prove that the App could help people look younger.
B. To find out how the App influenced people’s feelings about the future.

D. To show that the App could predict all possible future lives.
