A
As the spirit spoke, they stood on a country road with fields on either side. The city had disappeared. It was now day time, and there was snow on the ground.
“I know where we are!” Scrooge shouted. “I lived here as a boy.” He began to have memories of his childhood. A tear came into his eye.
“If you remember this place,” the spirit said, “you may now lead the way.”
They walked along the road until a little town could be seen ahead with its bridge, church, and river. Some small horses came towards them with boys upon their backs. When the boys came nearer, Scrooge recognized each of them and could call out their names. He felt so happy to see them again. All these boys shouted to each other until the fields were full of their laughter.
“We are now at the school,” said the spirit. “Only one child is there, left alone by the others.” Hearing what he said, Scrooge burst into tears.
They walked past the school house until they came to a room that was empty except for a small boy sitting at a desk, reading. The room seemed very old and needed to be repaired. The spirit pointed to the boy. Scrooge looked at the boy, sat down and couldn’t help crying. It was Scrooge when he was young.
Suddenly, a man wearing strange clothes stood outside the window. He was leading a horse. “It’s Ali Baba!” Scrooge shouted excitedly. “It’s dear, old, honest Ali Baba! Yes, I remember.”
Scrooge remembered how lonely he had been as a child. “Poor boy!” he said, and tears came into his eyes again. “I wish,” he said, putting his hands in his pocket and looking around him after drying his eyes, “but it’s too late now.”
“What do you wish?” asked the spirit.
“There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should have given him a present. That’s all.”

We gave Merrick two rooms at the back of the hospital. One room was a bathroom, so he could have a bath every day. Soon his skin was much better.
The second room had a bed, table, and chairs. He had never had a room of his own before. I visited him every day, and talked to him. He loved reading, and talking about books. He was very happy.
But sometimes it was difficult for him. One day a new nurse came to the hospital. She took his food to his room, and opened the door. Then she screamed, and ran out of the room.
I was very angry with the nurse, and went to see Merrick. To my surprise, he didn’t move and just watched her as she cried.
“People don’t like looking at me. I know that,” he said. “They usually laugh or scream.”
“Well, I don’t want nurses to laugh at you, Joseph,” I said angrily. “I want them to help you. This is your home now.”
“Thank you, doctor,” he said, in his strange slow voice. “But it’s not important. I understand that.”
In his one good hand, he had the little picture of his mother. He looked at the picture for a minute. A tear ran out of his eye and down the skin of his ugly face.
“Dr Treves,” he said, slowly. “You and the nurses are very kind. Thank you very much. But I know I can’t stay here long, and…I would like to live in a lighthouse, or a home for blind people. I think those are the best places for me.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
He did not look at me. He put the flower on the picture and looked at it carefully.
“Nobody could look at me in a lighthouse, so I would be happy there. And blind people can see nothing, so they couldn’t see me, could they?”
“But Joseph,” I said. “This is your home. You aren’t going to leave the hospital.”
“You are a kind man, Dr. Treves. But I can’t stay here very long. I have no money.”
I smiled. “Joseph,” I said. “You can stay here all your life. This will always be your home.”
He was very quiet for a minute. Then he stood up, and walked up and down the room very quickly. A strange sound came from him, like laughing.

My father was German, but he worked in England. He married my mother, who was English. Her family name was Robinson, so when I was born in 1632 in England, they called me Robinson, after her.
My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job, and live a quiet, pleasant life. But I wanted adventure and an exciting life.
“I want to be a sailor and go to sea,” I told my mother and father. They were very unhappy about this.
“Please don’t go,” my father said. “You won’t be happy, you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life.” And because I loved him, and he was unhappy, I tried to forget about the sea.
But I couldn’t forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship and my friend said to me, “We are sailing to London tomorrow. Why don’t you come with us?”
On September 1st, 1651, I went to Hull. And the next day we sailed for London.
But, a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous, and the ship went up and down, up and down. I was very ill, and was very afraid. “Oh, I don’t want to die!” I cried. “I want to live! If I live, I will go home and never go to sea again!”
The next day the wind stopped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again.
“Well, Robinson,” my friend laughed. “How do you feel now? The wind wasn’t too bad.”
“What!” I cried. “It was a terrible storm.”
“Oh, that wasn’t a storm,” my friend answered, “just a little wind. Forget it, come and have a drink.”
After a few drinks with my friend, I felt better. I forgot about the danger, and decided not to go home. I didn’t want my friend and family to laugh at me!
I stayed in London for some time, but I still wanted to go to the sea. So, when the captain (船长) of a ship asked me to go with him to Guinea in Africa, I agreed. And so I went to the sea for the second time.
It was a good ship, and everything went well at first, but I was very ill again. Then when we were near the Canary Islands, a Turkish pirate (海盗) ship came after us. They were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was a long, hard fight, but when it finished, we and the ship were prisoners. The Turkish captain and his men took us to Sallee in Morocco. They wanted to sell us as slaves (奴隶) in the market. But in the end, the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself, and took me home with him. This was a sudden and terrible change in my life. This Turkish captain was now my master.

Growth is about our real life, growth is also about what we experience through books. Reading opens up new worlds and brings us new ways of seeing things. Read the following story and enjoy an amazing journey under the sea.
It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top. I would go out and see the sunrise. Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to run away.
When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea.” “I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colorful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper.
As we were a hundred meters under the water, we could still see quite well. Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” there were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small bushes grew under the large seaweed trees.
Three hours later, we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we explored further.

One day, the boys meet and Prince Edward takes Tom to his room. They want to understand each other’s life so they decide to exchange clothes. But the boys’ game soon becomes a reality. “But the pig couldn’t help being born small, could it?” cried Fern. “If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”
Mr Arable smiled. “But this is different.” “I see no 66 (different),” replied Fern . “This is the worst case I 67 (hear) of since I was born!”

The Prince and the Pauper is set in 1547 and it tells the story of two young boys who are born on the same day into two very different families. They look very similar. One is Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII, King of England. The other is Tom Canty, a pauper (穷人) who lives with his cruel father in Pudding Lane, London.
One day, the boys meet and Prince Edward takes Tom to his room. They want to understand each other’s life so they decide to exchange clothes. But the boys’ game soon becomes a reality. The prince, dressed as Tom, is mistaken for a pauper and thrown out of the palace. From that moment, Tom lives the life of the prince. The real prince suffers in the role of the poor boy.
The boys have a number of adventures and they learn different things that help them to survive. Left among the poor, Edward suffers hunger, cruelty, and unfairness, seeing how common people live. A former soldier named Miles Hendon protects him. Meanwhile, Tom struggles (斗争) with palace life but shows kindness and common sense in his new role.
When King Henry VIII dies, Tom is set to be crowned (加冕) king. At the coronation (加冕礼), Edward appears just in time. With Tom’s honest help, Edward proves his true identity (身份) and is happy to be back in his place as king. He wants to do good things for the poor people of his country. He wants to improve the lives of the poor, and he works very hard to do this. The wise Tom becomes the king’s best friend. Finally, they are able to return to their own lives but they are both very different from before.
The Prince and the Pauper is a wonderful story of adventure with a strong message. It teaches the reader that expensive clothes and riches are not important: we must not judge a person by his clothes. It shows the importance of fairness, honesty and respect.
