The Taklamakan Desert, known as the “Sea of Death”, is the biggest desert in China and the second-largest moving desert in the world. It covers 337,600 square kilometres and now has a 3,046-kilometre-long green belt around it.
Building the green belt faced many problems. As we all know, the desert is very large with sand dunes (沙丘) as high as 300 metres. So more time, money, and effort are needed. The frequent sandstorms are another problem. The Taklamakan Desert is one of the most active areas for sandstorms in China, creating further difficulties.
Even with these problems, finishing the green belt is a huge success. Experts say it’s amazing, and the hard work paid off. The green belt protects oases (areas with water and plants) from sandstorms, improves the local environment, and supports farming. It also shows China’s strong skills in managing large environmental projects.

The dry climate added more challenges. The desert has little rain (50mm) but loses much more water (2,500mm) to evaporation (蒸发). Due to the shortage of water, plants are hard to grow.
