Luna’s deskmate Mia hears about the little sparrow and plans to visit it one weekend. “I don’t believe a small sparrow can tell people’s voices apart,” Mia says.
Luna smiles and says, “Just wait and see.”

Volunteer English tutors
If you speak clear, fluent English, you can offer free lessons to kids from migrant families in the community centre. The learners can be primary pupils or grown-ups who want to improve oral English.

The Grand Canal of China has been added to the World Heritage List, becoming one of China’s most precious cultural treasures. It is a perfect ancient model of Chinese water transport and city planning.
Stretching over 1,700 kilometres from Beijing to Hangzhou, the Grand Canal includes dozens of ancient water towns and old stone bridges. Its southern end lies in Hangzhou, while the northern starting point is Beijing’s Jishuitan.
The construction of the canal began in the Sui Dynasty and was finished in the Sui and Tang periods. People kept repairing and widening it through every dynasty, and it still plays an important role in inland transport and tourism now. From 2018 to 2022, the local government carried out a full protection plan: ancient bridge repairs, river environment cleaning and public culture activities.
UNESCO officers point out the Grand Canal meets two world heritage standards: It fully shows ancient Chinese water conservancy culture and stands as a landmark project recording ancient transportation history. Its design was greatly influenced by ancient Chinese geographical and Confucian ideas, which can be traced back to thousands of years ago.
China will keep protecting canal relics, hold more public culture activities and develop sustainable tourism along the canal banks.
22. Which city marks the southern end of the Grand Canal?
A. Beijing B. Suzhou C. Hangzhou D. Yangzhou
23. Which fact about the canal is TRUE?
A. It was fully built within one dynasty.
B. It hasn’t been repaired after the Tang Dynasty.
C. It still matters to transport and tourism today.
D. The protection project started in 2023.
24. What can we infer from the UNESCO officials’ words?
A. The canal’s design has deep traditional cultural roots.
B. No one knows where the canal’s design ideas came from.
C. City planning created the ancient Confucian thoughts.
D. The Grand Canal is recorded in ancient medical books.
25. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The reasons why the Grand Canal won world heritage status.
B. The whole building process of the Grand Canal.
C. How ancient water projects affected modern cities.

Learning water safety knowledge is necessary for every teenager, as a 14-year-old boy from Wuxi saved his drowning younger cousin last summer.
Last July, Lin Hao won a city youth safety award for using self-rescue skills he learnt at school to pull his cousin out of the river.
Lin Hao still remembers that afternoon clearly. He and his cousin played beside a small river near their village. Suddenly the little boy stepped on slippery mud and fell into deep water.
“The water quickly covered his chest and he couldn’t stand steadily,” Lin Hao said. Without thinking twice, he quickly grabbed a long bamboo pole beside the bank and held it out to his cousin. After several tries, the young boy caught the pole and climbed back to land safely.
Lin learned river rescue skills in monthly school safety lessons. “Our PE teacher taught us how to use long sticks or ropes to save drowning people instead of jumping into water ourselves,” Lin recalled.
His school holds safety lectures every four weeks and shares safety short videos on the class WeChat group. The school sets these lessons to teach students to stay calm and take correct action in water accidents.
Lin shares his opinion on safety learning: “Lots of students think water safety classes are boring and useless. But I believe we must take them seriously. These simple skills may save someone’s life one day.”

七、书面表达 参考范文
A Wonderful Outdoor Activity
Last Sunday, our class took a cycling trip to the mountain forest park outside the town.
We met at the school gate at 8 a.m. and rode bikes together along country roads. When we arrived, we walked along quiet forest paths to watch colourful wild flowers and little birds. At noon, we spread a cloth on the grass and shared sandwiches, fruit and juice with each other. After lunch, some classmates flew kites while others drew the beautiful mountain scenery.
This trip was unforgettable because we got close to nature and learned teamwork. When one class’s bike chain broke, all of us stopped to help him fix it patiently.
I learned a lot from this activity. Outdoor activities bring us joy and relax us from busy study. What’s more, we should care about each other when we go out together. I hope we can have more such wonderful outdoor trips in the future.
