For decades, the Grammys’ spoken word awards had gone to audio (音频的) books. Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording was their official title. But in 2023, poets had their own title: Best Spoken Word Poetry Album — all because of the efforts of Chicago poet J. Ivy. He had spent six years knocking down the impossible doors, taking the art of poetry directly into the mainstream (主流). He explained that it was important because poetry is, in fact, a big part of music.
Being a driving force for the appearance of the new Grammy type, Ivy was the type’s first winner. Not only is he a poet, writer, and voice-over (解说) artist, who has shared stages with Prince, Dave Chappelle, and many other famous artists, but he also connects his poetry with music. Besides, he used to represent Chicago on Def Poetry, a TV series about spoken word poetry performances.
While Ivy’s career (职业生涯) is practically paved with gold, it wouldn’t have happened without his high school English teacher, Paula Argue. In his acceptance speech during the Grammy ceremony, Ivy shouted out the name of his high school English teacher.
Over 30 years ago, Paula picked Ivy out in class. Upon entering Argue’s class, he was asked to write a poem and read it aloud to the whole class. “I was a very shy kid with no confidence, so to read anything or speak in front of anyone made me scared,” Ivy said. To his amazement, Argue gave him an “A” and then encouraged him to enter a talent show. During the show, Ivy received a great cheer from the audience. “Immediately, my whole life changed in front of me. I went from feeling unseen to ‘they actually do see me’. And I kept wanting to have that feeling,” Ivy added.
The busy poet has spent some time on the road with his City Winery Tour. “I want to provide the world with something that people haven’t quite enjoyed with poetry. Poetry has carried me through the years. I just want to give all that back onstage,” said Ivy.
24.What change did J. Ivy bring in 2023?
A.Mixing poetry with popular music.
B. Producing top audio books on poetry.
C.Getting poetry recognized by the Grammys.
D.Including poets in the Grammys’ judges.
25.What does paragraph 2 highlight about Ivy?
A.His advantageous personal relationships.
B.Early learning from professional artists.
C.Various themes of his creations.
D.His impressive career achievements.
26.What contribution did Paula make to Ivy’s success?
A.Appreciating his artistic talent early.
B.Preparing him for every performance.
C.Recommending his works to the Grammys.
D.Helping him create the award-winning poetry.
27.What does Ivy expect to do through his City Winery Tour?
A.Promote his new poetry collection.
B.Share his growth story with audiences.
C.Encourage self-expression through poetry.
D.Give audiences a unique poetry experience.

Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a special book about one of our most common daily things — the book. It brings together nearly 300 pieces of art about books from museums around the world. Paintings of people reading have shown up in art for thousands of years, even long before the modern books we use today were invented. In artists’ works about books and reading, we can see warm moments shared by people everywhere, no matter which culture or time they come from.
In this “book of books”, the art pieces are chosen and put in order to show the connections between different times and cultures. We can see scenes of children learning to read at home or school, where books help build close relationships between the old and the young. Adults are shown alone in different scenes: lost in a book, deep in thought, or enjoying a quiet free moment. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
In paintings, books are sometimes used as a sign to show a person’s cleverness, money and social position, or what they believe in. Before printing tools were widely used, books were very valuable, and even works of art themselves. These days, books are cheap and even often thrown away after use. So artists use them as materials to make new art, turning book covers, pages or whole books into paintings and other art pieces.
People once thought the development of digital tools would make printed books no longer popular. In the 21st century, printed books seem very old, but they are still as fun to use in your own way as any e-reader. A book only comes to life when you use it: you open the cover, turn the pages, read the words, and can even write notes or draw lines. Unlike our busy online lives, where every piece of information we look at is recorded, a printed book still offers a totally personal, “off-line” experience.
28.What is the main topic of the book?
A.The history of printing tools around the world
B.Art pieces about books and reading across the world
C.Warm stories of children learning to read at home
D.Differences between printed books and e-readers
29.What are the chosen artworks in the book mainly about?
A.Books and reading B.Family and school
C.Happiness and loneliness D.Work and fun
30.What do the underlined words “relate to” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Paint B.Understand C.Create D.Miss
31.What is the author’s attitude towards the printed book?
A.Unsure B.Negative C.Supportive D.Uncaring
D
At a bus stop or while waiting in line, most people look down and scroll on their phones. But studies suggest that if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, you may get some real benefits.
We spend nearly half of our waking hours daydreaming, but it is not always pleasant. One study found that people even preferred electric shocks to being alone with their own thoughts. This helps explain why we automatically reach for our phones during free moments.
Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares mindless scrolling to “brain candy” — it feels good for a moment but has no real meaning. She adds that human achievements mostly come from higher-order thinking.
So next time you have a few minutes free, put away your phone and let your mind wander. Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often too strong. In a 2022 study, people predicted they would hate 20 minutes alone doing nothing. Yet after the time was up, they reported more enjoyment than they had expected. Researcher Kou Murayama says the ability to let your mind wander — to think about past experiences and consider other people’s views — is a special human ability. It improves learning and helps us understand others.
Mind-wandering is also important for solving problems. People often find better solutions after unfocused thinking than by only trying hard. This is especially true during routine activities like driving or showering. Even when we are not actively thinking, our brain stays active in a “default mode”. This allows ideas to connect in new ways, which is very helpful for complex problems.
Besides cognitive benefits, daydreaming also strengthens social and emotional connections. One study found that imagining happy interactions with loved ones made people feel closer to them. Social daydreaming lets us practice conversations, think about past talks, and prepare for future social situations. As psychologist Poerio says, our ability to mentally “time travel” helps us handle the social world better.
Murayama says he now tries not to check his phone during short waits. Instead, he lets his thoughts wander. He finds that simply entertaining yourself in your own mind can be both satisfying and meaningful.
32.Why does Erin Westgate call mindless scrolling “brain candy”?
A.It is bad for your health. B.It helps people avoid boredom.
C.It replaces deep thinking in daily life. D.It gives quick but shallow pleasure.
33.What did the 2022 study show?
A.Phone addiction could be avoided. B.Daydreaming was not valued enough.
C.Being alone helped learning. D.Self-reflection made us human.
34.What does the “default mode” of the brain suggest?
A.Unfocused thinking can increase creativity. B.Trying hard always brings new ideas.
C.Hard tasks need an active mind. D.Routine tasks require little brain activity.
35.Which is the best title for the text?
A.Stay Focused in the Digital Age.
B.Discover the Joy of Truly Being Alone.
C.Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind.
D.Explore the Hidden Benefits of Social Daydreaming.

Why is cycling becoming increasingly popular? The exact reasons may be complex, but understanding this trend is not difficult. 36 As concerns over the ecological state of cities grow worldwide, governments encourage citizens to use the cleanest modes of transport. Besides, cycling offers great convenience. Many cities have built separate bike lanes to reduce traffic jams, which gives cyclists a big advantage in heavy traffic. 37
However, traditional bicycles may not meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic time. 38 Some new kinds of bikes are already being developed, such as bikes with an Internet connection that allow riders to work while riding. This integration of technology could transform cycling into a mobile workspace.
Moreover, future bikes will become smaller in size and more user-friendly. One promising example is the “sandwich bike,” which almost anyone can assemble (组装). These bikes come in a small flat box, and developers claim that an ordinary person can assemble the bike from the provided wooden and aluminum parts within 45 minutes. 39
40 This reflects the growing need for practical, eco-friendly city transportation. As cities expand and environmental concerns deepen, the bicycle — especially smart and easy-to-assemble versions — will likely play an even greater role in our daily commute.
A.Future bikes will have to change.
B.In fact, most design efforts focus on city bikes.
C.Various concepts are involved in designing bikes.
D.The bicycle is an environmentally friendly vehicle.
E.More citizens are turning to bikes for a faster commute (通勤).
F.This helps to relieve the concern for the ecological state of cities.
G.This ease of assembly saves shipping costs and encourages consumers.

They were gathering at the starting line — runners of all ages, shapes and sizes — preparing for the first 5K of the spring season. I knew this because I had 41 at the park's public restroom on my way to buy donuts and 42 the huge banner (横幅) announcing the race.
For some reason, I decided to sit on the grass and watch the race begin. I was 43 by the diversity I saw. There were teenagers and grandmas, mamas with babies strapped (捆) to their 44 , and dads followed by their young sons and daughters. 45 were happening everywhere before the officials 46 for the start.
Everyone looked glad to be there — proud, 47 . I wondered what aroused such enthusiasm. The idea of running for any reason 48 chasing down (追) an ice-cream truck had 49 been attractive to me.
As the runners took their places, I heard 50 from the bleachers (看台). “Go, Barbara! You got this, Mama!” “Grandpa, we love you! We're so proud of you.”
I decided to stay and watch. For some reason, the race became a study in human nature. I was attracted by the 51 . Who would cross line first? How long had that person been 52 ?
The ancient tea-horse road, once a vital trade route winding through mountainous regions, 56 (see) countless stories of courage and perseverance over centuries. Caravans consisting of horses and mules carried tea leaves from the south in exchange 57 horses from border areas, linking distant regions and promoting cultural exchange.
58 (walk) along the remains of the old path today, one can still sense the traces of the busy trade that once existed. Rough stone roads, weathered inns and faded inscriptions on cliffs serve as silent witnesses to the 59 (tire) efforts of ancient merchants and travelers.
Many of them faced severe weather, rugged terrains and unexpected dangers during the journey. Yet they never gave up, 60 (drive) by the hope of a better life and the desire to connect with the world beyond the mountains. Their journeys were not merely trades, but also a process of 61 (explore) the unknown and bridging cultural gaps.
Nowadays, the tea-horse road no longer bears large-scale trade, but its spirit remains. It reminds us that progress and communication require determination and unity. More importantly, it represents the 62 (wise) of humans in living in harmony with nature while pursuing development.
Many historians and travelers visit the site every year, 63 (admire) the scenery and respecting the spirits of those who once traveled here. The road, 64 has become a cultural symbol, teaches us that true value lies not only in material gains but also in the spiritual wealth gained through experience.
This historical heritage is well worth protecting, for it carries the memories of generations and conveys the truth that every tough journey contributes to 65 (we) growth and understanding of the world.

My grandpa was a master baker in Newton, Kansas. He never wasted anything in his shop. He would bring me various cookies once or twice a week. They were the cookies he couldn’t sell because they were broken.
It wasn’t until I started kindergarten that I learned that cookies were supposed to be round and whole, not broken into little squares or triangles.
After I made this troubling discovery, I asked Grandpa why he gave me broken cookies.
He said, “Grandson, you’re sure to meet a lot of broken things in your life, such as broken promises, broken hearts and so on. But here’s the thing: something is only broken if you choose to see it that way.”
I tried to remember Grandpa’s words. But as the years passed, his advice faded away (逐渐消失), waiting to speak to me at just the right moment.
And that moment arrived many years later.
My wife and I decided to move into a new house. It was December, and, against the advice of my wife, I had decided we would move everything ourselves. After a busy day, our new house was full. Suddenly my wife said, “Tomorrow is Christmas. We forgot to get a Christmas tree.”
So, we set out, on Christmas Eve, to find a Christmas tree. Of course there weren’t any. But at our last stop at a local shop, a salesperson directed us to the dumpster(垃圾大铁桶) out back, which was full of Christmas leftovers, suggesting that we might find one there. We made our way to the dumpster, and my wife, ever the adventurous type, climbed up the side.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Then she said excitedly, “There’s a living Christmas tree in here — upside down!”

W: Hello, everyone. I’m the director of The Jeeves School, and this morning I’m going to go through some information to help you all make sure your time here goes well.
So, first of all, lateness. We have quite a strict policy. If you are more than 10 minutes late, we ask you to wait until the break to join the class, so the rest of the class can work better. The break tends to be around 10:30, and half an hour later, you can join the second class. There’s a coffee machine in the student common room downstairs. But the machine has a habit of breaking down, so if you find it’s not working, please tell Jenny at the reception desk. There are toilets on the second floor and the ground floor. These are regularly cleaned so we don’t tend to have any problems with them.
As well as the courses, we have a great social program. Activities are open to everyone, and they have a habit of filling up quickly, so check the noticeboard in the common room for new events. You can book with Kit, our social program organizer. And finally, as a rule, we have a free barbeque on the first Friday of every month. That’s all from me. Any questions?

【答案】24.C 25.D 26.A 27.D
根据第一段中的“For decades, the Grammys’ spoken word awards had gone to audio (音频的) books...But in 2023, poets had their own title: Best Spoken Word Poetry Album — all because of the efforts of Chicago poet J. Ivy. He had spent six years knocking down the impossible doors, taking the art of poetry directly into the mainstream (主流).(数十年来,格莱美口语类奖项一直颁发给有声读物……但在2023年,诗人有了自己的奖项:最佳口语诗专辑——这一切都归功于芝加哥诗人J. Ivy的努力。他花了六年时间敲开了那些看似不可能的大门,将诗歌艺术直接带入了主流)”可知,J. Ivy在2023年带来的改变是让诗歌获得了格莱美的认可。
25.推理判断题。根据第二段“Being a driving force for the appearance of the new Grammy type, Ivy was the type’s first winner. Not only is he a poet, writer, and voice-over (解说) artist, who has shared stages with Prince, Dave Chappelle, and many other famous artists, but he also connects his poetry with music. Besides, he used to represent Chicago on Def Poetry, a TV series about spoken word poetry performances.(作为格莱美新奖项设立的推动力量,Ivy是该奖项的首位获奖者。他不仅是诗人、作家和解说艺术家,曾与普林斯、戴夫·查佩尔等众多著名艺术家同台,还将自己的诗歌与音乐结合起来。此外,他曾在《街头诗歌》——一部关于口语诗表演的电视剧中代表芝加哥)”可知,第二段重点突出了Ivy令人印象深刻的职业成就。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Over 30 years ago, Paula picked Ivy out in class. Upon entering Argue’s class, he was asked to write a poem and read it aloud to the whole class. “I was a very shy kid with no confidence, so to read anything or speak in front of anyone made me scared,” Ivy said. To his amazement, Argue gave him an “A” and then encouraged him to enter a talent show.(30多年前,Paula在课堂上发现了Ivy。进入Argue的课堂后,他被要求写一首诗,并在全班面前朗读。“我是一个非常害羞、缺乏自信的孩子,所以在任何人面前读任何东西或说话都会让我害怕,”Ivy说。令他惊讶的是,Argue给了他一个“A”,然后鼓励他参加才艺表演)”可知,Paula对Ivy成功的贡献是早早发现并欣赏他的艺术天赋。故选A。
根据最后一段“The busy poet has spent some time on the road with his City Winery Tour.I want to provide the world with something that people haven’t quite enjoyed with poetry. Poetry has carried me through the years. I just want to give all that back onstage,” said Ivy.(这位忙碌的诗人已抽出部分时间,开展他的City Winery巡回演出。
C
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.B 31.C
根据第一段“Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a special book about one of our most common daily things — the book. It brings together nearly 300 pieces of art about books from museums around the world. (《阅读艺术:书籍爱好者的艺术》是一本特别的书籍,探讨了我们日常生活中最常见的事物之一——书籍。它汇集了来自世界各地博物馆的近300件关于书籍的艺术作品。)”可知,这本书的主要主题是关于世界各地与书籍和阅读相关的艺术作品。
29.细节理解题。根据第一段“It brings together nearly 300 pieces of art about books from museums around the world. (它汇集了来自世界各地博物馆的近300件关于书籍的艺术作品。) ”以及第二段“In artists’ works about books and reading, we can see warm moments shared by people everywhere, no matter which culture or time they come from. (在艺术家关于书籍和阅读的作品中,我们可以看到世界各地人们分享的温暖时刻,无论他们来自哪种文化或时代。) ”可知,书中选出的艺术作品主要是关于书籍和阅读的。
30.词句猜测题。根据第二段“These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to. (这些场景可能是在几百年前绘制的,但它们记录了我们都能relate to的时刻。) ”以及前文描述的这些场景是人们分享的温暖时刻,可知这些场景是人们能够理解和共鸣的,所以“relate to”在此处意为“理解”,与understand同义。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In the 21st century, printed books seem very old, but they are still as fun to use in your own way as any e-reader. A book only comes to life when you use it: you open the cover, turn the pages, read the words, and can even write notes or draw lines. Unlike our busy online lives, where every piece of information we look at is recorded, a printed book still offers a totally personal, “off-line” experience.

【答案】32.D 33.B 34.A 35.C
根据第三段中“Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares mindless scrolling to “brain candy” — it feels good for a moment but has no real meaning. (社会心理学教授Erin Westgate将无意识的刷屏比作“大脑糖果”——它当下感觉良好,但没有任何实际意义)”可知,Erin Westgate将无意识刷屏称为“大脑糖果”是因为它能带来短暂而肤浅的快乐,没有任何实际意义。
33.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often too strong. It improves learning and helps us understand others.(许多人对无聊感到恐惧,但这种恐惧往往被放大了。
根据第五段中“Mind-wandering is also important for solving problems. People often find better solutions after unfocused thinking than by only trying hard. This is especially true during routine activities like driving or showering. Even when we are not actively thinking, our brain stays active in a “default mode”. This allows ideas to connect in new ways, which is very helpful for complex problems.
通读全文,结合第一段“But studies suggest that if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, you may get some real benefits. (但研究表明,如果你抵制住那种冲动,让思绪漫游,你可能会获得一些真正的好处)”、第五段“Mind-wandering is also important for solving problems. (思绪漫游对解决问题也很重要)”和第六段“Besides cognitive benefits, daydreaming also strengthens social and emotional connections. (除了认知方面的好处,做白日梦还能加强社交和情感联系)”可知,文章主要探讨了让思绪漫游(做白日梦)对解决问题、学习和社交的多重益处,旨在揭示思绪漫游的积极价值。故C项“Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind (释放你漫游思绪的力量)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Then she said excitedly, “There’s a living Christmas tree in here — upside down!”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In our moment of disappointment, I suddenly remembered Grandpa’s words.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Then she said excitedly, “There’s a living Christmas tree in here — upside down!” I quickly joined my wife and peered into the dumpster. “Yes, It’s a living Christmas tree. Let’s get it out.” With herculean effort, My wife and I pulled the tree out of the dumpster. It catapulted over the edge and spilled onto the pavement. “It’s broken,” I quietly pronounced. “The upper half of the tree was missing, which was undoubtedly why it had been discarded.” We stood silently, our momentary glee dashed by what lay before us.
In our moment of disappointment, I suddenly remembered Grandpa’s words. I shared Grandpa’s wisdom with my wife — something is only broken if you choose to see it that way. Those words gave us new hope, and we decided to bring the broken Christmas tree home. Back home, my wife and I patched the tree together with lights and ornaments. We placed it in the corner, half or not, it stood proud and bright. Thanks to Grandpa, we were inspired to see beyond the obvious — perfection isn’t in the shape, but in how you choose to see it.
