Now I want to talk about Rob Cook. This man is a true hero. He has already received the White Flower Award, which symbolizes charity. Back then he helped pay for the construction of a school. Then we gave him the Gold Star for bravery, when he saved a child from a terrible fire. Today we honor him again with the Pink Rose.
A
How High-Rises Shaped Modern Britain
Eyesores and dangerously unsafe? Or ideal housing for the working classes? Holly Smith tells the stories behind some of the UK’s most revolutionary homes — buildings that have deeply shaped modern Britain, mixing novelty, success and painful debate.
Kensal House (1936, west London)
Co-designed by Maxwell Fry and Elizabeth Denby, it was intended for working-class families between the two World Wars, when modernist homes for the rich were already popular. It offered bright, spacious flats with private balconies, labour-saving kitchens and public gardens. Managed by residents with strict rules, it was a pioneering model that inspired thousands of estates later — completely distinct from the dark, crowded and poor areas people had to live in before.
Ronan Point (1968, east London)
This poorly built tower collapsed just two months after opening: a small gas leak on the 18th floor destroyed a whole wing, killing 5 people and hurting 17. Its concrete panels were piled up without a strong internal frame, and its joints were even filled with old cement (水泥) bags and wrinkled newspapers. The public shock exposed widespread structural faults in high-rises, though hundreds of such blocks still lack proper strengthening today.
Trellick Tower (1972, west London)
In sharp contrast, this high-rise is a masterpiece by Hungarian architect Ernö Goldfinger. It used top materials like marble lobbies and stained glass, as the designer believed high-rises could “free the ground for gardens” and set high standards for public housing — turning homes from just simple shelters into spaces where people could express their lives fully.
Cascades (1988, east London)
This flashy postmodern tower dominates the Thames, mixing ocean liner elegance and old storehouse solidity while taking inspiration from local marine history. Nicknamed “Yuppie Towers,” it was the first private luxury high-rise here, with a pool and a gym. It created a clear contradiction: social housing high-rises are seen as signs of poverty, while new luxury ones stand for success.
21. What can we learn about Ronan Point from the text?
A. Its structural faults led to a tragic accident.
B. Its construction featured sustainable materials.
C. Its design targeted luxury housing for the rich.
D. Its failure helped completely address similar faults.
22. What do Kensal House and Trellick Tower have in common?
A. They served as ideal examples.
B. They provided private gardens.
C. They were built with top materials.
D. They were under strict management.
23. How does Cascades reflect the evolution of British high-rises?
A. Postmodern designs replaced modernist ones.
B. Luxury facilities became standard for high-rises.
C. They shifted from public housing to private luxury.
D. Postmodernism became the mainstream design style.
A 22. A 23. C

根据Ronan Point部分“This poorly built tower collapsed just two months after opening: a small gas leak on the 18th floor destroyed a whole wing, killing 5 people and hurting 17. Its concrete panels were piled up without a strong internal frame, and its joints were even filled with old cement (水泥) bags and wrinkled newspapers. The public shock exposed widespread structural faults in high-rises, though hundreds of such blocks still lack proper strengthening today. 故选A项。
根据Kensal House部分“Managed by residents with strict rules, it was a pioneering model that inspired thousands of estates later — completely distinct from the dark, crowded and poor areas people had to live in before. (由居民严格管理,这是一种开创性的模式,后来启发了成千上万的住宅区——与人们以前不得不居住的黑暗、拥挤和贫困地区完全不同)”和Trellick Tower部分“In sharp contrast, this high-rise is a masterpiece by Hungarian architect Ernö Goldfinger. It used top materials like marble lobbies and stained glass, as the designer believed high-rises could “free the ground for gardens” and set high standards for public housing — turning homes from just simple shelters into spaces where people could express their lives fully. 故选A项。
根据Cascades部分“This flashy postmodern tower dominates the Thames, mixing ocean liner elegance and old storehouse solidity while taking inspiration from local marine history. Nicknamed “Yuppie Towers,” it was the first private luxury high-rise here, with a pool and a gym. It created a clear contradiction: social housing high-rises are seen as signs of poverty, while new luxury ones stand for success.
B
At I’Brindellone, a restaurant in Florence, a dozen men and women gather around a long wooden table, deep in conversation about Sarah Winman’s Still Life. On the walls hang photographs of the city’s 1966 flood, when the River Arno burst its banks. The group point at the images excitedly. Winman once dined here, saw these same photos, and found the seed of her story. This literary circle of strangers is on a reading retreat — part of an evolving wave of holidays that put reading center stage. As a guide, I often witness scenes like this — moments when literature pours life into stone streets, and strangers become companions through shared stories.
Not long ago, travel often meant racing through a checklist of famous sites. I watched tourists rush past in steady streams, capturing monuments with their cameras but rarely with their hearts. Many said they wanted to truly understand Florence — to talk about its culture in Piazza della Signoria or reflect on its history along the Arno — yet their tight schedules left little room for such depth.
Recently, however, I’ve noticed a change. More travelers now look for connection — with places, with ideas, and with the authors they love — rather than simple checklist completion. One guest told me, “Travel is a time to invest in ourselves, not just rest. Walking the streets, seeing the landscapes and feeling the atmosphere of a novel’s setting deepens my understanding of the story. A scene that was once only words on a page suddenly comes alive when I stand in the same light as the characters.”
As Jeanette Winterson beautifully wrote, “Books are like doors; when one opens, a new world waits.” The best journeys, I have learned, can transform not only the path we walk, but also the eyes with which we see.
24. Why does the author mention the scene at I’Brindellone?
A. To introduce a popular novel. B. To illustrate a new travel trend.
C. To show the history of Florence. D. To recommend a local restaurant.
25. What can we learn about traditional tourism?
A. It stimulates architectural interests. B. It discourages visitors’ capturing monuments.
C. It promotes the benefits of slow travel. D. It undervalues cultural explorations.
26. What does the guest’s description reveal in paragraph 3?
A. Place serves as a medium that activates textual meaning.
B. Text provides a framework for understanding place.
C. Place and text are independent of each other.
D. Text loses its meaning without physical reference.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards reading retreats?
A. Objective. B. Dismissive. C. Skeptical. D. Favorable.
B 25. D 26. A 27. D
根据第一段中“This literary circle of strangers is on a reading retreat — part of an evolving wave of holidays that put reading center stage. (这群由陌生人组成的文学圈子正在进行一场阅读静修,这是不断发展的、将阅读置于核心地位的度假新浪潮的一部分。)”可推知,作者提及该场景是为了引出介绍这种新型旅行趋势。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Not long ago, travel often meant racing through a checklist of famous sites. I watched tourists rush past in steady streams, capturing monuments with their cameras but rarely with their hearts. Many said they wanted to truly understand Florence — to talk about its culture in Piazza della Signoria or reflect on its history along the Arno — yet their tight schedules left little room for such depth. (不久之前,旅行通常意味着赶时间完成著名景点的打卡清单。我见过一批又一批游客匆匆路过,用相机拍下古迹,内心却毫无感触。许多游客说他们想要真正了解佛罗伦萨——在领主广场讨论它的文化,沿着阿诺河思索它的历史,但他们紧凑的行程几乎没有留给这种深度探索空间。)”可知,传统旅行以赶景点为主,行程紧凑,低估了文化探索的价值。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Walking the streets, seeing the landscapes and feeling the atmosphere of a novel’s setting deepens my understanding of the story. A scene that was once only words on a page suddenly comes alive when I stand in the same light as the characters. (走在小说背景地的街道上,见识这里的风景、感受这里的氛围,加深了我对故事的理解。当我站在和书中角色相同的光影中时,原本只存在于纸页文字中的场景突然变得鲜活起来。)”可知,亲临小说发生地,书中文字场景变得鲜活,说明实地场景是载体,让文字内容变得生动有实感。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The best journeys, I have learned, can transform not only the path we walk, but also the eyes with which we see. (我发现,最好的旅行不仅能改变我们行走的道路,也能改变我们看待世界的眼光。)”并结合全文可知,作者认可将阅读作为核心的阅读静修旅行,对其持赞成态度。
C
When someone loses weight, people notice, comment, and ask how. The question implies that whatever method they used is worth knowing, reproducing, or admiring. It positions weight loss as an achievement, a moral victory, a signal of discipline or virtue. But what if their weight loss came from grief, stress, depression or a medication that finally brought balance to their body chemistry?
Our curiosity about how someone lost weight is rarely neutral. Often, it’s rooted in our own insecurity or desire for control. We want to know what works — because culturally, we’ve been taught that managing our bodies is a lifelong project. When we see someone “succeed,” we want the recipe. However, rather than self- improvement projects, our bodies are complex ecosystems — shaped by genetics, hormones, health conditions, socioeconomic factors, medications, and emotions. When we reduce someone’s body to a before- and- after story, we dehumanize them into an object lesson.
The recent explosion of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro has made this question even more controversial. Many people assume any visible change must be drug- related, and they ask with hardly disguised judgment or envy. “Did you use one of those medications?” has become the new “Did you get work done?” The subtext is clear: Did you earn this, or did you cheat?
This framing is not only prejudiced — it’s unscientific. GLP-1 medications are legal medical treatments for conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), metabolic dysfunction, and obesity. Shame has no place in a conversation about health or healing. Yet we’ve moralized weight loss to such an extent that even those who find life-changing relief through medication are made to feel guilty or defensive for it.
We live in a society enthusiastic about Cinderella stories. Weight loss is still treated like a transformation myth. But health and self-worth are not determined by body size, and accomplishments shouldn’t be measured in pounds. When we cease looking into how people lost weight, we start to undo a small but powerful part of that narrative. We give others and ourselves permission to exist without explanation, justification, or public commentary on our bodies.
28. Why do people ask about weight loss methods?
A. To manage their desire for control.
B. To address their own body image anxiety.
C. To identify effects of weight medications.
D. To study human body ecosystems closely.
29. What does the underlined word “framing” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Avoiding controversial questions.
B. Building support structures.
C. Labelling medication as cheating.
D. Misjudging health conditions.
30. Which statement would the author probably agree with?
A. Weight loss signals discipline and virtue.
B. Medications are universal health solutions.
C. Dieters should defend their own rights.
D. Self-worth is independent of body size.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Celebrating Body Changes
B. Psychology of Losing Weight
C. Stop Judging Weight Loss
D. Medical Solutions to Overweight
B 29. C 30. D 31. C
根据文章第二段第一、二句“Our curiosity about how someone lost weight is rarely neutral. Often, it’s rooted in our own insecurity or desire for control. (我们对他人如何减肥的好奇心鲜少是不带立场的。它常常植根于我们自身的不安全感或对控制感的渴望)”可知,人们询问减肥方法,并非出于单纯的好奇,其深层动机是为了应对自身的不安全感,即对自己形象的焦虑,或寻求一种能掌控自己身体的方法。由此推知,人们询问减肥方法是为了解决他们自身的身体形象焦虑。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段最后两句““Did you use one of those medications?” has become the new “Did you get work done?” The subtext is clear: Did you earn this, or did you cheat? (“你用过那些药吗?” 已经变成了新版的“你整容了吗?”潜台词很明确:这是你努力得来的,还是你作弊了?)”及第四段第一句“This framing is not only prejudiced — it’s unscientific. (这种framing不仅是偏见——也是不科学的)”可知,这里的“framing”指的是上文将使用药物减肥视为“作弊”,这种带有道德评判的偏见的界定方式。因此,“framing”在此处是指将药物治疗贴上“作弊”的标签。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段第三句“But health and self-worth are not determined by body size, and accomplishments shouldn’t be measured in pounds. (但健康和自我价值并非由体型决定,成就也不该用磅来衡量)”和最后一句“We give others and ourselves permission to exist without explanation, justification, or public commentary on our bodies.
D
The anchoring effect, a common mental tendency rooted in the study of how people make economic choices, refers to how people overly depend on the first piece of information, which is called the “anchor”, when making later judgments. This simple thinking strategy affects pricing negotiations, risk assessments, and even moral evaluations. For instance, jurors (陪审员) asked to consider a 30-year prison sentence before discussion often settle closer to this figure, while those given a 10-year reference tend to suggest much shorter punishments.
The Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman threw light on this tendency via his “wheel of fortune” experiment. In the experiment, participants spun a wheel that was secretly set to stop at either 10 or 65. After spinning, they were asked to estimate the percentage of African nations in the UN. Interestingly, those who saw the wheel stop at 10 guessed around 25%, while those seeing 65 guessed about 45%. Even when people know the anchor is random, this unreasonable reliance still persists.
The anchoring effect works in two main ways: the process of adjusting one’s thoughts step by step and the influence of early information on later thinking. When people try to guess a number, they often start with the anchor and then change their answer only a little — never enough to get away from the anchor’s influence. This fact becomes apparent in the field of marketing: labels marked with first prices serve as high anchors, which cause consumers to perceive the value of discounts as higher than their actual worth.
Neurological (神经学上的) studies find that anchoring stimulates the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and the amygdala (杏仁核). This double activation explains why anchors influence both reasonable and emotional decisions.
Yet the tendency has moral issues: lawyers demanding harsher initial sentences often secure longer sentences, while real estate agents controlling listing prices can artificially push up market values. To reduce it, people can set clear evaluation criteria and think carefully without focusing on original anchors, helping them make fairer , more reasonable choices.
32. Which of the following situations best illustrates the anchoring effect?
A. A customer decides to buy a phone after reading positive online reviews.
B. A buyer offers £600 for a handbag after the seller first quotes £800.
C. A student chooses a book because its cover is more eye-catching.
D. A shopper buys an expensive scarf simply because it is on sale.
33. What can be inferred from Kahneman’s “wheel of fortune” experiment?
A. People are unaware when they are influenced by random anchors.
B. The anchoring effect only occurs when anchors are relevant to the topic.
C. Random numbers can significantly influence people’s numerical estimates.
D. People can easily overcome anchoring when they know the anchor is random.
34. Why does the author mention the prefrontal cortex and amygdala?
A. To prove that the anchoring effect is an in-born mental tendency.
B. To show that the anchoring effect can be controlled by adjusting brain activity.
C. To explain that the anchoring effect shapes both sensible and emotional resolutions.
D. To highlight the importance of neurological research in understanding mental phenomena.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a psychological experiment and its findings.
B. To explain a cognitive bias and its real-world implications.
C. To argue against the use of anchors in marketing strategies.
D. To compare different types of mental tendencies in decision-making.
B 33. C 34. C 35. B

根据第四段“Neurological (神经学上的) studies find that anchoring stimulates the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and the amygdala (杏仁核). This double activation explains why anchors influence both reasonable and emotional decisions.(神经学研究发现,锚定会刺激前额叶皮层和杏仁核。
In recent years, deliberate practice has gained increasing attention in the field of second language acquisition. Unlike traditional approaches that rely heavily on repetition or passive exposure, deliberate practice emphasizes focused, goal-driven activities designed to improve specific aspects of language performance. It aims to push learners slightly beyond their current abilities rather than keeping them within familiar routines. ____36____
At the core of deliberate practice is a carefully structured learning cycle. Learners work toward clearly defined goals, engage in tasks tailored to those goals, and receive timely feedback that informs subsequent attempts. ____37____ This process helps learners identify weaknesses and enhance performance through repeated, purposeful effort rather than random practice. Teachers play a crucial role in this process. They must assess learners’ current abilities and design tasks that fall within the learner’s Zone of Proximal Development ____38____
Furthermore, deliberate practice challenges a common assumption about learning. Many learners believe that spending more time on familiar material guarantees progress. ____39____ Research suggests instead that best learning occurs when practice involves manageable difficulty and sustained mental effort, even if progress feels slower at first.
____40____ With appropriate initial support, learners can apply the same principles to independent study using digital tools, authentic materials, or language-learning applications. Its effectiveness ultimately depends on both teachers and learners.
By prioritizing intention and structure over enormous time investment, deliberate practice offers a more efficient pathway to language development, particularly in non-immersion (非沉浸式)contexts.
A. This belief, however, is not supported by evidence.
B. Yet this structure does not guarantee success on its own.
C. It is a cycle of focused effort, feedback, and targeted repetition.
D. Importantly, deliberate practice is not restricted to classroom instruction.
E. Many learners lack the required skills for effective independent learning.
F. They must also know when to gradually reduce support as learners improve.
G. As a result, quality of practice becomes more important than quantity of time.
G 37. C 38. F 39. A 40. D
根据上文“In recent years, deliberate practice has gained increasing attention in the field of second language acquisition. Unlike traditional approaches that rely heavily on repetition or passive exposure, deliberate practice emphasizes focused, goal-driven activities designed to improve specific aspects of language performance. It aims to push learners slightly beyond their current abilities rather than keeping them within familiar routines.(近年来,刻意练习在二语习得领域受到了越来越多的关注。与严重依赖重复或被动接触的传统方法不同,刻意练习强调有重点、有目标的活动,旨在提高语言表现的特定方面。它旨在将学习者稍微推向其当前能力之外,而不是让他们停留在熟悉的常规中)”可知,上文对比传统方法突出刻意练习的核心特点,此处需承接上文得出结论。G选项“As a result, quality of practice becomes more important than quantity of time.(因此,练习的质量比时间的数量更重要)”中as a result承接上文逻辑,总结刻意练习的核心要义,符合语境。故选G项。
根据上文“At the core of deliberate practice is a carefully structured learning cycle. Learners work toward clearly defined goals, engage in tasks tailored to those goals, and receive timely feedback that informs subsequent attempts.(刻意练习的核心是一个精心设计的学习循环。学习者朝着明确的目标努力,参与为这些目标量身定制的任务,并收到及时的反馈,为后续的尝试提供参考)”以及下文“This process helps learners identify weaknesses and enhance performance through repeated, purposeful effort rather than random practice.(这个过程帮助学习者发现不足,并通过有目的的重复努力而非随意练习来提高表现)”可知,上文介绍学习循环的构成,下文说明该循环的作用,此处需衔接对循环的进一步阐释。C选项“It is a cycle of focused effort, feedback, and targeted repetition.(它是一个包含专注努力、反馈和针对性重复的循环)”中it指代上文的learning cycle,精准概括循环的核心要素,且与下文this process呼应,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Teachers play a crucial role in this process. They must assess learners’ current abilities and design tasks that fall within the learner’s Zone of Proximal Development (最近发展区).(教师在这个过程中扮演着关键角色。他们必须评估学习者当前的能力,并设计出处于学习者最近发展区内的任务)”可知,上文阐述教师的一项核心职责,此处需补充另一项相关职责。F选项“They must also know when to gradually reduce support as learners improve.(他们还必须知道在学习者进步时何时逐渐减少支持)”中they指代前文的teachers, also承接上文的职责表述,符合教师在刻意练习中的角色定位,语境连贯。故选F项。
根据上文“Furthermore, deliberate practice challenges a common assumption about learning. Many learners believe that spending more time on familiar material guarantees progress.(此外,刻意练习挑战了一种普遍的学习认知。许多学习者认为,在熟悉的材料上花费更多时间就能保证进步)”以及下文“Research suggests instead that best learning occurs when practice involves manageable difficulty and sustained mental effort, even if progress feels slower at first.(相反,研究表明,当练习涉及可掌控的难度和持续的脑力付出时,才能实现最佳学习效果,即使起初感觉进步较慢)”可知,上文提出学习者的错误认知,下文用研究结果反驳,此处需衔接转折关系。A选项“This belief, however, is not supported by evidence.(然而,这种认知并没有证据支持)”中this belief指代上文学习者的观点,however引导转折,完美衔接下文的研究结论,符合语境。故选A项。
根据下文“With appropriate initial support, learners can apply the same principles to independent study using digital tools, authentic materials, or language-learning applications.(在适当的初始支持下,学习者可以将相同的原则应用到使用数字工具、真实材料或语言学习应用程序的自主学习中)”可知,下文说明刻意练习在自主学习中的应用,此处需引出刻意练习的应用范围。D选项“Importantly, deliberate practice is not restricted to classroom instruction.(重要的是,刻意练习并不局限于课堂教学)”中not restricted to classroom instruction恰好引出下文自主学习的应用场景,上下文逻辑顺畅,符合语境。故选D项。

Network and Information Security
Today, I’d like to talk about network and information security. And I believe everyone agrees that it is a matter of growing importance in our digital age.
To ensure secure online activities, we ought to prioritize authoritative websites (such as Xinhua) as credible information sources. Additionally, we must stick to civilized internet conduct which requires us to behave properly in online interactions and avoid inappropriate content. Most crucially, we should develop the habit of verifying facts — examining information carefully to tell true information apart from false stories.
By following these principles, we can help build a safer, more rational digital environment. Thank you for your attention.

“Another A+, and I’ll get you that new game you’ve been wanting,” my mom said with a smile. It was just the motivation I needed. I was usually a pretty good student, but with that extra push, I was determined to do well on my next math test. Every evening, I buried myself in my notes, practicing problems. My confidence grew with every completed practice test.
When the big day arrived, I felt ready. I took a deep breath as I entered the classroom and tried to keep calm. But despite all the preparation, my nerves got the better of me. Halfway through the test, I blanked on a formula, and time was running out. I scribbled down the best answers I could and handed in my paper, hoping for the best.
A week later, I got the test back. My heart sank as I saw the big red “A-” at the top. “No game,” I thought miserably. It wasn’t a bad grade, but it wasn’t enough. Disappointed, I stared at the grade, wishing it could magically turn into an “A+”. I could almost hear my mom’s voice, full of pride, congratulating me on my hard work. The idea gnawed (啃咬) at me until I did something I never thought I’d do. I changed the “-” into a “+”.
The moment I got home, I handed the test to my mom with a forced smile. She looked at it and congratulated me, hugging me proudly. Then she turned to walk toward her bedroom. My heart raced-part excitement, part a sharp twist of guilt I couldn’t ignore. A moment later, she emerged holding a black box, the logo of the game I’d begged for glinting in the lamplight. “I picked it up yesterday, just knowing my hardworking kid would pull through,” she said, pressing the box into my hands. I forced a thank-you, my voice tight.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

The next morning, I decided to tell her the truth even if it meant losing the game.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later that night, I tossed and turned in bed, lost in reflection. I kept thinking about the test, wondering whether I should tell Mom the truth. If I told her, I would lose the game. But if I didn’t, I would be dishonest. I couldn’t sleep. The next morning, I didn’t get up as usual. My mom came into my room and asked what was wrong. I decided to tell her the truth. As I lay there, the image of Mom’s proud smile when she saw my “A+” kept flashing before my eyes, making my chest tight with guilt.
The next morning, I decided to tell her the truth even if it meant losing the game. I told Mom I failed the test and she left without saying a word. I thought she would be angry, but when she came back, she said, “I believe you can do better next time.” I was so surprised and I promised to study hard. I learned that my mom loved me and I should be honest. From that day on, I worked harder than ever, determined to earn the trust and respect I truly deserved.

A
How High-Rises Shaped Modern Britain

A. Objective. B. Dismissive. C. Skeptical. D. Favorable.

That's five thousand dollars more than last year. Now I want to talk about rob cook. This man is a true hero. He has already received the White flower award, which symbolizes charity. Back then, he helped pay for the construction of the school. Then we gave him the gold star for bravery when he saved a child from a terrible fire. Today we honor him again with the pink rose. Although rob is retiring this year, and we are all sad to see him go, there is one advantage of his leaving. There will be more awards left for the rest of us. And now please welcome rob cook.
