The story goes back to the 1950s. Polio (俗称“小儿麻痹症”) was spreading fast across China. The disease was very easy to get and mostly hurt young children. Many died, and those who lived often had health problems for life. In 1957, Gu Fangzhou, a 31-year-old scientist, was asked to make China’s own polio vaccine (疫苗).
