When we think of horses, we often think of speed. But horses also stand for hard work and self-belief. English has idioms (习语) that show this “other side”. People born in the Year of the Horse share these characters. Tu Youyou and Zheng Qinwen are great examples.
Work like a Horse
To “work like a horse” means to work very hard for a long time. Picture a farm horse doing heavy work step by step, even when tired.
Tu Youyou, born in 1930, was the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize in Medicine. She worked many years to find a medicine for malaria (疟疾). She failed many times but never gave up. That’s what “work like a horse” means: keep going until your work pays off.
Dark Horse
A “dark horse” is a surprising winner. Sometimes a horse that looks average at the start wins in the end. But the win only looks sudden because people didn’t see the hard training behind it. True dark horses have dreams and believe in themselves, even when others underestimate them.
People once called Zheng Qinwen a “dark horse”. Born in 2002, she made history as the first Chinese athlete to win Olympic tennis singles gold. Zheng said, “I believe an Asian player, a Chinese player, can also win a Grand Slam (大满贯)”.
Yes, horses can be fast. But true horsepower is about slow, steady progress. Work hard and believe in yourself. One day, you might surprise everyone—including yourself!
31. We can infer Tu Youyou and Zheng Qinwen were born in the year of the ________.
A. Horse B. Rabbit C. Pig D. Dragon
32. Which of the following best describes Tu Youyou according to the passage?
A. Quiet. B. Hard-working. C. Humorous. D. Friendly.
33. The underlined word “underestimate” means ________ in Chinese.
A. 依靠 B. 尊重 C. 关心 D. 低估
34. “Dark horse” in the passage most probably refers to someone who ________.
A. always hides his or her true ability B. wins competitions without training
C. wins when nobody expects him or her to D. is stronger than others from the beginning
35. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To compare scientists with athletes. B. To explain the rules of horse racing.
C. To introduce famous people born in China. D. To encourage readers to work hard and believe in themselves.

As China celebrated the Spring Festival in 2026, astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station received a wonderful gift—a successful harvest of tomatoes grown in space. This “space garden” shows the possibility of supporting plant life far from Earth.
In a recent video, astronaut Zhang Hongzhang showed that tomato plants were growing well in an aeroponic cultivation system (气雾栽培系统). The system was developed by Chinese researchers. It works by turning water into a fine mist, which saves a lot of water. It also uses special LED lights to save energy. The result was this good harvest of space-grown tomatoes.
The system was sent to the space station in 2025. Its main job is to test how to grow plants efficiently without Earth’s gravity (重力). The information collected will help future long space missions where growing food is necessary.
For the astronauts, these tomatoes are more than an experiment. “Look at these tomatoes. They are so attractive. Every time I pass by this area, I take a deep breath to enjoy the fragrance,” said astronaut Wu Fei. The crew cares for the plants daily and records their growth. This information will be useful for growing space crops in the future.
Scientists are studying space agriculture with this system, including the best ways to grow plants and how they can help renew air inside the spacecraft. Future plans include trying to grow wheat, carrots, and medicinal herbs in space, increasing the variety of foods that can be grown.
Working with this garden is comforting for the busy crew. It gives them confidence for their tasks, and they will continue to share the wonders of their space ecosystem.
36. What wonderful gift did the astronauts receive?
A. A new plant. B. A space garden.
C. A harvest of tomatoes. D. A message from Earth.
37. What does the underlined word “fragrance” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Smell. B. Shape. C. Size. D. Sound.
38. What can we know about the aeroponic cultivation system?
A. It can help grow plants. B. It can produce energy.
C. It can collect water. D. It can renew lights.
39. What can we infer from the last paragraph about the space garden?
A. It will soon replace food supplies on the space station.
B. It makes the astronauts feel more confident and relaxed.
C. It takes too much time and keeps the crew from their jobs.
D. It has produced enough wheat and carrots for a long mission.
40. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Space Tomatoes: A Successful Harvest
B. Space Test: A New Study on Garden
C. How to Grow Food on a Space Station
D. How to Care for Plants in Zero Gravity

We’ve all been there: Sometimes you know you need to say no to someone’s request, but in the end, you agree to help with more things unwillingly (不情愿地). This is because you are not able to set certain boundaries (边界). ___41___ Here are ways to improve this skill.
*Don’t ignore your feelings.
Emotions show in your body. When someone comes to you with a request, pay attention to your body’s response (反应). ___42___ For example, as they speak, you might feel muscle tension (肌肉紧张). This is a signal from your body to say no.
*___43___
To deal with the sense of being sorry, you may explain too many reasons for saying no. However, the more information you share, the more likely you are to be talked into saying yes. You should keep your answer short and sweet when saying no. You can be kind and direct when setting boundaries.
*Don’t delay (延迟) your response.
___44___ By doing this, you secretly hope that others will forget the request. However, this way does not work. Not solving the matter in real time allows emotional forces to influence you. As a result, a delayed no may turn into an unwilling yes.
*Set boundaries often.
Mastering (掌握) this skill takes time. You may feel uncomfortable at first. ___45___ Remember that not setting boundaries is also hard. It’s tiring to always be careful not to make other people angry.
A. But over time, it gets easier.
B. Nobody can push you to agree with them.
C. Don’t lose hope if you have trouble setting them.
D. It tells you how to reply even before you say a word.
E. It’s a common way to put off giving a response to a request.
F. Don’t over explain.
G. Learn to say yes properly.

【答案】31. A 32. B 33. D 34. C 35. D

【33题详解】
第五段原句“True dark horses have dreams and believe in themselves, even when others underestimate them.”,结合黑马是不被看好却获胜的人,可推出underestimate意为低估。
【34题详解】
第四段给出定义“A ‘dark horse’ is a surprising winner. Sometimes a horse that looks average at the start wins in the end.”,说明黑马指没人预料到会取胜的人。
【35题详解】

【答案】36. C 37. A 38. A 39. B 40. A
