Dear Mr Friend,
I am a Grade Nine student and I have two big problems these days. First, I have too much schoolwork every day. I have to stay up late to finish it, so I always feel tired and sleepy in class. What's more, I like playing basketball very much, but I hardly have time to do sports now. I really want to keep my hobby, but I am afraid it will make me fall behind in my study.
Second, I often argue with my parents. They think sports waste my study time and ask me to give up basketball. I try to talk with them, but we always fail to understand each other. I feel sad and lonely. I don't know what I should do.
Could you please give me some useful advice? I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

First, you should make a clear time plan every day. It can help you manage your time well and stop wasting time. Try to finish your schoolwork in the daytime so that you don't need to stay up late. Second, you'd better communicate with your parents patiently. Tell them your real thoughts and your love for hobbies. They will understand you finally. Besides, you can take a short walk or listen to music when you feel upset. It is a great way to relieve pressure.

一、阅读理解
1
Once a single advertisement is stuck on a clean door, people will keep sticking more until the whole door is ruined, while a door without any advertisements usually stays clean for a long time. This interesting but worrying phenomenon (现象) in our daily life is a perfect example of what we call the “Broken Window Theory”.
The theory comes from an experiment done by a famous American psychologist named Philip Zimbardo in 1969. He left two identical cars in different neighborhoods, one of them with a broken window. To his surprise, the car with the broken window was quickly destroyed and stolen by people passing by, while the other car remained untouched for over a week. This shows that signs of disorder or neglect (忽视) can easily encourage further bad behavior.
This theory explains many problems. For instance, if a piece of litter is left on the sidewalk and nobody cleans it up, passers-by will soon think it is acceptable to throw more rubbish. Similarly, if a student begins to call someone names or use smartphones during class without being stopped, others will follow, which eventually destroys the learning environment. Another example is bullying; if mockery (嘲弄) is not corrected immediately early on, it may grow into serious school bullying.
Thomas Lickona, a famous American education expert, once noted that schools which fail to fix early bad behaviors are actually opening the door to bigger problems. Therefore, teachers must set clear rules from the very beginning and stop any small misbehavior before it turns into a bigger trouble. Meanwhile, students should develop self-discipline and have the courage to say “no” to bad habits, making sure they do not become the person who breaks the first window.
1.Why is the phenomenon described in paragraph 1?
A.To show the effect of the “Broken Window Theory” on readers.

2.What does the underlined word “identical” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.clean B.expensive C.private D.similar

A.Students may clean up the messy desk quickly.
B.More students may leave their desks in a mess.
C.The teacher may ask the student to clean the desk.
D.The student’s grades may drop unexpectedly.
4.What can we know from the passage?
A.Bullying becomes serious because small misbehavior is neglected.
B.Sidewalks become dirty because no cleaners clean them up.
C.The car was stolen because it was left out for a long time.
D.Learning environment was destroyed because of smartphones.
5.What advice is given to students?
A.Stopping bad behaviors. B.Fighting back against bullying.
C.Refusing to follow bad behaviors. D.Obeying school rules.

At some point in life, many people develop a mental (精神) problem. While most people get over it, for others, it doesn’t go away easily.
The WHO says that about 20 percent of teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. It’s thought that the number of teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2024. It will become one of the main causes of illness, and even death.
In China, the picture isn’t bright, either. About one tenth of teenagers under the age of 17 have a mental health challenge.
The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.
A research centre in Oxford University says that young people today have big stresses at school. For example, they experience bullying (欺凌). In a report, the centre noted that the Internet was a special source (渠道) of stress. Online, young people often see “messages about perfection” and this causes the young “great uncertainty about their futures”, says the centre.
Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don’t ask for help with their mental problems. They fear that others will laugh at them if they say that they are in mental trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. And in the UK, over three quarters of young people believe their mental problems have a social stigma. It is reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn’t ask for help if they developed a mental problem.
Young people who don’t ask for help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Elaine Peng warned that, “If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever.”
“My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—ask for help,” she told China Daily.
6.Which of the following is NOT the cause of stress according to the passage?
A.Heavy schoolwork. B.Being bullied at school.
C.Some information from the Internet. D.Certainty about the future.
7.According to the passage, why don’t Chinese people ask for help with their mental problems?
A.They don’t think them serious.
B.They can get over them in time.
C.They can keep their mental health secret.
D.They are afraid of being looked down upon.
8.What does the underlined word “stigma” most probably mean in Chinese?
A.羞耻 B.印象 C.援助 D.危害
9.The main purpose of the passage is to __________.
A.ask the research centre to help with teenagers’ stress
B.talk about teenagers’ stress in different countries
C.call public attention to teenagers with mental illness
D.show different opinions about mental illness

In late August, a British TV host named Kirstie Allsopp found herself in a media storm, because she posted on social media that her son, 15-year-old Oscar, and his 16-year-old friend went on a three-week trip by train to many famous cities like Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and Madrid. Kirstie ended her story by saying if we worry too much, our kids will be scared too. But if we trust them, they can do amazing things.
Her post got two million views. Some people agreed with her. However, others thought it was wrong for teens to travel without adults. This caused a lot of talk, which made the headlines (成为重要新闻) in Britain and even caught the attention of UK social services. People focused on when it’s okay for kids to travel alone without adults.
Travel experts say it’s difficult to decide how old someone should be before they can travel alone. It really depends on many factors like how mature (成熟的) they are, their travel experience, the rules of the country they’re going to, and how safe that place is.
Carolyn Pearson, who runs a company that helps business travelers stay safe, said, “I think the skills teens learn from traveling by themselves for three weeks might be more valuable than what they learn in three years of school.”
People who support young travelers to explore the world believe it can be really good for them, even if it seems risky. Cole Robinson, a filmmaker from Manchester, says his first solo (单独的) trip to Barcelona at 16 was a big moment in his life. It made him work in jobs that let him see the world.
In fact, when young travelers are going somewhere, a consent (同意) letter from parents is important. Don’t forget travel insurance (保险), which is also important for beginners.” Travel insurance companies have an interest in solving their customers’ problems, “a travel expert said,” so it will be a way to protect your child in his first solo adventure.”
10.Why did Kirstie face a social media storm?
A.She let her young teenage son travel without adult supervision.
B.The program she hosted was not popular.
C.She was worried about her kid too much.
D.She didn’t provide her kid with support.
11.What did people mainly worry about the kids’ trip?
A.What kinds of children can travel alone.
B.The age at which a child can travel alone.
C.Whether young teenagers should travel alone.
D.Whether a solo trip can help young teenagers grow.
12.What can we know about Carolyn and Cole?
A.Both of them work in a travel company. B.Carolyn is against Cole’s view.
C.Neither of them supports Kirstie. D.They share the same view.
13.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Different popular ways for teenagers to travel.
B.Whether kids should be allowed to travel alone.
C.An online debate about parenting.
D.Traveling alone is beneficial to kids’ growth.

Greece has announced (宣布) a new plan to help young people. Starting in 2027, children under 15 will not be allowed to use social media. The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, shared this news in a video message. He said too much screen time is causing problems for many teenagers.
The Prime Minister explained the reasons. He talked to many parents. They said their children often feel worried and cannot sleep well. The children spend many hours on their phones. They compare themselves with others online and read comments (评论). This makes them feel stressed. The design of social media apps can also be very addictive (上瘾的). It is hard for young minds to rest. A recent survey showed that most people in Greece agree with this new rule.
Greece wants to be a leader in protecting young people online. The government has already stopped mobile phone use in schools. Other countries like Slovenia and Spain are thinking about similar rules. The goal is to make the whole European Union think more about young people’s screen time and mental health. This is not about saying ‘no’ to technology, but about helping teenagers have a healthier balance in their lives.
This change makes us think. How much time do we spend looking at screens? Does it make us happy or stressed? Sometimes, a short break from our phones can help us feel better. We can talk to friends face-to-face, play outside, or just relax. It is important to find time for activities that do not need a screen. Our mental health is very important.
What do you think about this new rule? Is it a good idea? Maybe we can all try to use our phones a little less. We can set rules for how much we use it. Let’s think about what truly makes us feel good and connected. After all, real life happens off the screen too.
14.What will happen in Greece starting from 2027?
A.All teenagers will stop using mobile phones completely.
B.Children younger than 15 cannot use social media.
C.Parents must control how much time their children spend online.
D.Schools will teach students about the dangers of the Internet.
15.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a problem caused by too much screen time for teenagers?
A.They feel worried and have trouble sleeping well.
B.They feel stressed when comparing themselves to others online.
C.They have difficulty focusing on their study at school.
D.They find it hard to rest their young minds.
16.How do most people in Greece feel about the new rule?
A.They would like to support the idea.
B.They are surprised by the government’s decision.
C.They are worried it will not work.
D.They think it is too strict for teenagers.
17.What can we infer from the passage about the Greek government’s goal?
A.It wants to stop young people from using any technology.
B.It hopes other countries will make the same rules about screen time.
C.It believes social media companies should change their apps.
D.It is trying to help teenagers have a healthier life balance.

Are you going through adolescence (青春期)? You might have started adolescence earlier than your parents did.
Puberty begins when your body tells your brain to produce certain hormones (激素). During adolescence, teenagers grow quickly and their bodies change.
Studies show that adolescence is happening earlier now. Take girls in the US, for example. They are getting their periods (生理期) about six months earlier than girls did a few decades ago. The average age used to be 12.5 years old, but now it’s just under 12.
Many things can cause early adolescence. Obesity is one of the key reasons. This may be because fat cells (细胞) produce estrogen, a type of hormone which is important for female body changes. Some chemicals in care products and food, as well as stress, may also be the reasons.
Studies show that early adolescence might increase the risk of health problems, like breast cancer and heart disease as well as shorter adult height. What’s worse, teenagers who start adolescence earlier might feel scared or angry. “They might be treated differently as they look older or different, which can make them doubt themselves,” said Aviva Sophia, a doctor at a children’s hospital in New York, US.
The problem often hits girls harder, for they pay more attention to their bodies, which can put greater social pressure on them to act in a more ‘adult’ way.
Caring parents say, “I don’t want my girl to grow up in that way.” Some of them even become very nervous...

Nowadays, more and more teenagers have health problems because of bad living habits. Let’s look at some good ways to keep fit.
First, eat a balanced diet. We should eat more fruit and vegetables. They are rich in vitamins and can help us stay healthy. We shouldn’t eat too much junk food like fried chicken and ice-cream. They are high in fat and sugar, which are bad for our bodies.
Second, exercise every day. Doing sports can make us strong and energetic. We can run, swim or play ball games. It’s good to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
Third, get enough sleep. Teenagers need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Staying up late will make us tired and not able to study well.
Finally, keep a good mood. Being happy can help our bodies work better. We should learn to relax ourselves when we feel stressed.
24.Why do many teenagers have health problems?
A.Because they eat too much fruit.
B.Because of bad living habits.

With the rapid development of social life, more and more teenagers love fast food. Fried chicken, hamburgers and potato chips are their favorite food. Fast food tastes delicious and saves much time, so many students choose to eat it after school or on weekends. However, fast food does great harm to teenagers’ physical health.
Firstly, most fast food is high in oil, salt and sugar. Eating too much fast food will make people get fat easily. Many middle school students are overweight because of eating fast food too often. Being overweight will bring many health problems, such as tiredness, poor sports ability and easy illness.
Secondly, fast food lacks necessary nutrition. It has few vegetables and fruits, so it can’t provide enough vitamins for teenagers who are growing fast. Teenagers are in the key period of physical growth. They need balanced food with meat, vegetables, fruit and grains. If they only eat fast food, their bodies will become weak and easy to fall ill.
Thirdly, eating too much fast food will influence eating habits. Many students who love fast food refuse to eat home-cooked meals. Home food is simple but healthy. Parents spend much time cooking balanced meals for kids, but many kids are picky about food. This is bad for long-term health.
Doctors suggest that teenagers should stay away from fast food as much as possible. Eat more vegetables, fruit and healthy home cooking. Drink more water instead of sugary drinks. Keeping healthy eating habits is the best way to keep fit and grow healthily. Health is the greatest wealth for every teenager.

① How did you spend your last holiday? Did you just stare at a screen from morning till night? Well, you are not alone. A new survey shows that the average Chinese person spends over five and a half hours online every day. That’s a lot of time scrolling (滚屏) and watching videos! But is this really helping us relax, or is it just making our brains tired?
② First, let’s think about how we spend our time online. Most of us watch short videos rather than learning something new. This kind of low-value material doesn’t help us relax—it actually makes our thinking less clear. The term “brain rot” perfectly describes what happens when we spend too much time on meaningless online things.
③ Meanwhile, using the Internet is like eating your favorite snack: it’s hard to stop. Our phones and tablets are full of endless short videos and memes(梗), making them like personal fun factories. It’s easy and comfortable to just sit and scroll for hours, but this “easy fun” comes at a cost. The more time we spend on screens, the less we enjoy real life. We’re missing out on beautiful sunsets, heartfelt (由衷的) thanks, and fun hobbies. When did our lives become so boring?
④ Also, we’re forgetting how to relax in a meaningful way. Free time shouldn’t just be about watching Douyin or Bilibili. Instead, it should be a chance to connect with the world. Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it has fresh air, sunlight, and birdsong. Spending time with friends in real life is much better than laughing alone at a meme on your screen.
⑤ In short, life isn’t about how much time you have—it’s about how you use it. Screens are here to stay, but they shouldn’t take over our free time. The summer holiday is coming soon. Will you choose to do something more meaningful? Remember, “brain rot” is real!
34.What does “brain rot” mean in the passage?
A.Enjoying real-life activities.
B.Thinking less clearly because of screen time.
C.Feeling sad after watching videos.
D.Learning something new online.
35.Why does the author compare the Internet to snacks?
A.It’s a waste of time. B.It’s one way to have fun.
C.It’s bad for one’s health. D.It’s not easy to control.
36.What does the author suggest for a meaningful holiday?
A.Chat with friends online. B.Stay indoors and use Wi-Fi.
C.Spend time in nature or with friends. D.Watch more educational videos.
37.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Many teenagers can hardly stay away from their phones, especially on weekends. They spend hours watching videos, checking messages and looking through social media (社交媒体). Although this seems relaxing, too much screen time actually brings them heavy stress.
Ben, a 15-year-old teenager, felt exhausted after a hard week of study. He tried to relax by using his phone, but soon he found himself spending six to seven hours a day on short videos, social media and games. After he got sick one day, a doctor suggested that he should put down his phone. Following the advice. Ben slowly began to feel better again.
Actually, what the doctor advised is called a digital detox (数字排毒). That means _______. Too much screen time keeps the mind from resting. Teenagers take in too much information online and keep comparing themselves with others’ “perfect” lives. At the same time, long hours spent on screens stop the body from relaxing. This non-stop activity makes stress build up quickly.
However, some teenagers still think spending time on screens is the best way to relax. But a study by Harvard Medical School showed a different result. It found that those who used screens for longer time produced less melatonin (褪黑素), a chemical that helps people fall asleep. As a result, they slept worse.
Therefore, experts say that after a busy week of study, teenagers need to relax and regain (恢复) energy. They are supposed to put down screens, focus on real-life activities and get enough sleep so that they can truly rest and feel ready for a new week.
38.Why does the writer give the example of Ben?
A.To show that studying too hard can make teenagers sick.
B.To prove that using phones too much is a good way to relax.
C.To give a real-life example of how screen time can harm health.
D.To explain why teenagers should relax on weekends.

Do you like to solve problems for children? Listed below are probably three of the best answers.
I want to stay a kid forever. I love my birthday, but I don’t want to be older.
—Haddie, Washington
The great thing about growing up is that it doesn’t happen all at once. Day after day, you’ll have new experiences which can be scary, but they can also be fun.
When we feel sad about growing up, try thinking of all the things that you hope can happen when you’re older. It’s good to enjoy being a kid, but you should know that some adults say they still feel like kids!
I like fantastic books, and I’m thinking of writing one. But I don’t know how to begin. Please help!
—Liam, Pennsylvania
One idea is to list “top five"memories, such as your top five trips, funny things that happened at school and so on. Choose one of these for a story. Another idea is to imagine what book you’d like to write. As words pop into your mind, write them down. Then challenge yourself to write a story using all of those words, Good luck writing.
Kids tease(嘲笑) me because I’m the slowest runner in my class. What can I do?
—Tiona, Oregon
We’re sorry to hear that. These kids may be looking for attention, and if you don’t give it to them, they may stop.
If that doesn’t work, you could try replying with kindness. Sometimes kind words are the best answer to them. If the teasing continues, be sure to talk to someone who can help. If improving your running speed is something you’d like to work on, you could also ask your gym teacher for advice.

These days more and more students like to have parties on weekends. But is it good or bad for them? Different people have different ideas. Some people are for it, while others are against it.
Some people think having a party is good for students to know and understand each other well. On weekdays, students are always studying. They don’t have any time to have fun. However, some parents are against having parties. They think it’s a waste of money and time. Students always buy many expensive gifts so they will spend a lot of money. Because students don’t make money, they have to ask their parents for money. And some students are always serious about the parties. They spend too much money and time on them. Some parents say nothing can be done when the students get together and they are just for fun. They think students can’t pay more attention (注意力) to their studies in the following week.

一、阅读理解

18.What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To explain why teenagers in Greece are feeling stressed.
B.To introduce the new rules about social media for young people in Greece.
C.To compare the screen time rules in different European countries.
D.To give advice on how to design better social media apps.

19.What is one of the signs of adolescence starting for girls?
A.Growing taller. B.Fast increase in weight.
C.Getting periods. D.Producing hormones.
20.What can cause early adolescence?
A.Chemicals in products. B.Adult body changes.
C.Older looking. D.Peer pressure.
21.What might the underlined word “obesity” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Overstress. B.Overweight. C.Overwork. D.Oversleep.
22.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How hormones change in adolescence.
B.What happens to our bodies during adolescence.
C.How our feelings change during adolescence.
D.Why adolescence is starting earlier and what this means.
23.What may the last paragraph continue to talk about?
A.Some practical advice to prevent early adolescence.
B.The experts to solve the problem of early adolescence.
C.Different teenagers’ different ideas towards early adolescence.
D.Girls’ advantages of getting early puberty.

They seldom sing or dance. And they have no time to communicate (交流). A party can make them relaxed and happy. And each family has one child. The children need to make friends with each other.

To deal with stress, we can do sports after class, listen to light music, or talk about our feelings with friends.

Recently, our school did a survey about why some students don’t do housework. The results show that the biggest reason is too much schoolwork. 10% of students say their parents want to do everything. Some think other things are more interesting or don’t know how to do it.
To help solve these problems, here are my suggestions. First, treat housework as a break from studying. After sitting for an hour doing homework, stand up and sweep the floor. It relaxes your body and eyes. Second, do one small thing every day. You don’t need hours.

In most Chinese schools, break lasts 10 minutes, which is designed for students to relax and prepare for the next class. Recently, some schools have extended recess to 15 minutes, sparking heated discussions among students.
Some students argue 10 minutes is too limited—many barely have time to use the toilet and stretch before the next class bell rings. However, others believe 10 minutes is enough, saying a longer break will make students too distracted to get back to learning.
Personally, I support the 15-minute recess. It gives us enough time to relax our brains and bodies, which helps us study more efficiently in the following class.
