One day, while Mr. Worth was reading a book, his grandson Shawn ran into the house after school. He told his grandfather about a class science project that he was very excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants grew big and strong, the students were to plant them in a garden at school. They all wanted to grow the strongest and best bean plant.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds (种子). He explained that his teacher taught them how to make the seeds grow. First, they put the seeds on a wet paper towel (纸巾). Then, put them near a window to let them get some sun. When the seeds sprout (发芽), they are ready to be moved into a small pot.
After listening to his grandson, Mr. Worth said, “You do just as you have learned, but I want to show you one more thing about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow strong plants,” he continued. “When the plant is starting out, you put some weight on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather unbelievably.
“Doesn’t the weight stop the bean from growing?” he asked.
“No, of course not. This way, you will force the bean plant to be strong and healthy. If you give it everything it wants, it will grow too fast and it will be weak. Then when the first big wind blows, it will fall over.”

A team of researchers in China has made plants that can shine in the dark. These special plants can be recharged (充电) by sunlight. They can shine in colors like red, green, and blue.
Scientists have tried to make shining plants for many years. In this new study, the team put phosphor (荧光粉) into the plants. Phosphor can take in light and store it. Then, it slowly gives the light back.
The researchers built a wall with 56 shining plants. Sunlight was used to give them power. The light was strong enough for someone to see words, pictures, and even a person standing 10 cm away. The shine lasted for about two hours. After that, the plants could be powered again by putting them back in the sun.
The scientists found that one kind of plant worked best. It is a succulent (多肉) called Echeveria mebina. These plants retain water in their leaves, so they are strong and easy to care for. The researchers are still not sure if the phosphor is safe for the plants. More tests are needed.
The team hopes to make a new kind of environment-friendly lighting. One scientist said, “Imagine shining trees taking the place of streetlights.” But some experts are not so sure. A plant scientist from the University of Cambridge said the research was “fun” but a little ahead of today’s technology.

Rebecca Young, now age 13, designed a solar-powered blanket (太阳能毯) and won first prize among 70,000 students in the UK Primary Engineer competition.
Where did you get the idea?
When I would go outside in the winter months, I always saw homeless people with very little to stay warm. It always made me so sad. I wanted to come up with something that could help them.
How does your invention work?
My solar-powered blanket takes sunlight during the day and stores it into a battery (电池) . At night, the blanket uses the energy it saved. It turns off when it gets warm enough so it won’t get too hot.
How did you bring your idea to life?
I did research on other sleeping bags and backpacks and then created a drawing for the competition. After I won, the engineers actually built a real model of my idea. It uses copper wires (铜线) to make the blankets warm, and solar panels (太阳能板) to collect energy from the sun. I made something that might one day help a person on the street. That thought is amazing to me.
Why do you love science?
Science is great because it makes us curious and teaches us how to ask, try, and fix things. I want kids to know: if they can dream it, they can make it real. Nothing is impossible!
36. How did Rebecca feel when she saw homeless people with very little to stay warm?

例文
Last week, our classmates had a discussion on whether the AI apps are helpful for us when doing our homework.
Some students think AI apps truly help a lot. They say these apps explain difficult problems clearly and make studying easier.
However, other students disagree. They worry that using AI apps too often will make us lose the ability to think independently. Also, AI sometimes gives wrong answers, which may mislead us.
In my opinion, AI apps can be useful tools, but we should use them wisely. We shouldn’t rely on them completely. Instead, we should use them to check our work and learn from the explanations, so that we can improve our study effectively.

Shawn listened carefully and felt excited. He wanted to grow the bean in the way his grandfather described. He could hardly wait to tell his friends what he had learned that day.

AI-Button is an online AI learning tool for middle school students. It acts like a teacher and meets each student’s personal needs. This online AI learning tool is very easy to use: students just need to input (输入) their study materials, and it can quickly find key points, raise questions and answer all kinds of questions for them.
It was created by Qiu Yumo, a 13-year-old student from Shenzhen. She is a talented and kind girl who started learning programming at the age of 6 and could make small games when she was only 7. Besides, she has loved public service since she was little — she joined charity sales at 4 and donated her long hair on her 13th birthday.
In early 2023, while preparing for exams, she found most learning apps were too complicated for students. So she decided to create a simple and useful study tool, which was the start of AI-Button.
At first, AI-Button was only for her personal study. But after sharing it online, it soon caught wide attention from students and teachers. Then she turned it into a free public service platform and set up a student team with partners from different schools to improve it. What’s more, as a pet lover, she also created a tool to count pets’ steps, which can help people keep their pets healthy.
AI-Button also connects with public service activities, letting students learn and help others at the same time. It can not only help with study but also comfort students when they feel stressed.
Qiu’s creativity and kindness make her a great role model for teenagers, showing the creative spirit of young Chinese students.

We’ve heard news that kids died after being left in cars in the sun. According to research, kids’ body temperature rises three to five times faster than adults’. So young kids can develop terrible heatstroke (中暑) in just a few minutes.
Hearing such news, three teenage researchers—Areen Alashmawy, Sara Altarawenh and Ayah Alkatib—wondered how to solve this problem. Together, they invented a device (设备) with a heatstroke-warning system (系统).
Named “Safe in Car”, their invention tests the temperature and CO2 levels in a car. It can check how many people are inside and warn people about the car’s conditions by sending text messages to their smartphones. The invention also has a camera. When it’s connected to an app on their smartphones, people can see the car’s indoor temperature and CO2 levels from far away.
This new invention also provides a way to solve the problem. When the indoor temperature or CO2 level reaches dangerous levels, the invention helps open the car windows, which could help save lives.
The three researchers once tried to get help for their work. But when they went to engineers and doctors for advice, these adults thought their idea was full of challenges and even impossible. The young researchers are now proud to show them they made it.
The three hope that their invention can someday be used in cars. They also imagine that one day it could send a warning call to the police and use GPS to show where the car is. It can really save people’s lives, especially kids’.
( ) 27. What made the three teenage researchers invent the device?
A. The sad news about kids’ deaths.
B. Their own unpleasant experiences.
C. Their wish to win a prize.
D. The unusual hot weather.
( ) 28. Which paragraphs tell us how “Safe in Car” works?

( ) 31. What is phosphor used for in this study?
A. To help plants take in and give out light.
B. To help the plants grow bigger and faster.
C. To make the plants stronger and live longer.
D. To make the plants hold more water in their leaves.
( ) 32. What can the shining plants do after being put in the sun?
A. Grow faster. B. Shine again. C. Change colors. D. Turn green.
( ) 33. What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Lose. B. Store. C. Drink. D. Produce.
( ) 34. What do some experts think about the shining plants?
A. They are harmful to the environment.
B. They are ready to replace streetlights.
C. The research is fun but not yet practical.
D. People may not like them in daily life.
( ) 35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Streetlights or Sunlight
B. The History of Plant Research
C. How to Make Plants Grow Faster
D. Shining Plants: A New Kind of Light
四、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
37. When will the solar-powered blanket turn itself off?
38. What did Rebecca do before she created a drawing for the competition?
