My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green (the school colors) jacket, was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years. I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children. I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us. This scholarship jacket was my only chance. One day in May, I happened to overhear Mr Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr Boone, my math teacher arguing about me in the office. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is;her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify (伪造)records.” said Mr Schmidt angrily. But Mr Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the board (董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and...” Shaking and sad, I, waited a few minutes and walked away. The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.” Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said,“I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” I cried on the way home. By the time I got home, my eyes were red and swollen. I found my grandpa in the bean field. Sensing something wrong, he asked me what happened with great concern. I murmured the principal’s words, a surge of regret gnawing at my heart. I really hated to see my gray-haired grandpa’s disappointment. Grandpa’s eyes rounded in disbelief. Time ticking by, he heaved a long sigh, “My child, an award bought can’t be called an award.” I nodded understandingly. But who knew how reluctant and bitter I was? I dragged into the principal’s office the next day, sad and disappointed. My head still lifted with dignity. I tried to fight back the tears, stammering, “I cannot...afford the jacket, sir.” Staring into my eyes, the principal suddenly grinned, “I have good news for you.” I looked at him in confusion. “The board decided that an award cannot be bought just for the sake of winners’ dignity.” His eyes brimmed with smiles. I pinched my hand only to find I was not dreaming. Only at that moment did I believe that Mr Schmidt and my grandpa were right: never can awards be falsified or bought. 2.续写线索 找到祖父——告诉发生的事——作者心理情绪——祖父叹息感慨——走到校长办公室——告诉校长买不起——校长更改主意——作者得到夹克 ★话题词汇 行为类: ①低声说:murmur/ say in a low voice/ mutter ②看着:stare into/ look at/ watch 情绪类: ①难以置信:in disbelief/ incredibly/ unbelievably ②失望:disappointment/ despair/ frustration ★话题句式 ①Sensing something wrong, he asked me what happened with great concern.(运用了sensing现在分词作状语) ②I pinched my hand only to find I was not dreaming.(运用了省略引导词that的宾语从句作find的宾语) ③Only at that moment did I believe that Mr Schmidt and my grandpa were right: never can awards be falsified or bought.(运用了部分倒装句和由that引导的宾语从句作believe的宾语) 【高中生重新认识校园】 ★名校真题【2024浙江高考】 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym. Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist. In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car! When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. ” It’s just the beginning, “she thought.” I’ll come in last for sure. “ Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word” mile. “Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four. When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Bent over with hands on knees, she gasped for air, unable to believe she had actually run the whole mile. During the run, whenever she felt like giving up, she had focused on the moving shadow cast by the oak tree instead of the endless track. Chasing that shadow gave her a clear direction and a reachable goal each time. To her surprise, those small steps added up to a full mile. Coach patted her shoulder, saying she had more power than she knew. Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. Instead of trying to memorize the entire map, she broke her route into small landmarks: the water fountain, the bulletin board, and the staircase with the cracked step. Each time she moved from one spot to the next, she told herself, “Just reach the next landmark.” Soon, the confusing hallways no longer felt like a maze. By the end of the week, she could walk to class without hesitation. Eva realized that life, like running, was easier when you stopped fearing the distance and focused on the next step forward. 2.续写线索:方向感太差记不住学校建筑的位置——体育课上绕着学校跑却找不到方向——害怕最后一名心里非常紧张——跟随影子找到方向——受到教练的赞赏——获得感悟 ★话题词汇 行为类 ①专注于影子focus on the shadow ②把路线拆成小地标break the route into small landmarks ③专心慢跑至某处concentrate on jogging to the spot 情绪类 ①惊讶的 / 震惊的surprised and amazed ②绝望但坚定的desperate but determined ★话题句式 [高分句型1]Bent over with hands on knees, she gasped for air, unable to believe she had actually run the whole mile.
